I am exactly pragmatic enough to know that I am not truly pragmatic.

For personal, trivial things when I have something I like I will keep it that way until it falls apart or becomes ridiculously outmoded. I do not pretend there is logic to them.

I tend to like the simplest things for daily use objects but that’s not “pragmatism,” it’s preference. Even when something nicer is available, lol. I waited until my phone was freezing when opening a calculator AND it would no longer charge to upgrade it, even though it was likely justified a year and a half before that.

I understand where you’re coming from and that’s a valid take.

For me it’s the time period and to a degree a resulting language barrier for certain pieces. Dostoyevsky for me, (I know W&P is Tolstoy, bear with me) was understandable but hard to bear with because he wrote like loved ones I have who have serious mental struggles. A lot of Russian culture and literature is similarly toned. Ralph Waldo Emerson came across to me as self-righteous. And Tolkien, though he’s a fantastic author, writes with heavy visual description which I can’t process well due to aphantasia.

Although, I loved Frankenstein and begrudgingly, also Jane Eyre. I also got a kick out of Chaucer. Every few years I’ll re-read Little Women. I also adore learning factual information.

I think most of it comes down to a variation in personal perspective/preference AND whether you’re critically engaging with the material you’re taking in. Hell, the Barbie movie can be thoughtfully critiqued. I’ve known folks who wrote doctorates on specific video games.

I’d argue the “cooking vs. eating” would be more comparable to “reading vs. writing,” though, no? Cooking ends with material output. Maybe “eating and savoring a meal vs. mindlessly downing a bag of chips.”

Ingesting information is ingesting information. For most of human history stories were oral tradition rather than written. Accessibility is also a factor. Not everyone can physically read, nor can everyone listen to an audiobook or podcast. Both are valid options.

I’m impressed by anyone who can get through heavy, old literature without falling asleep no matter which format they choose though lol

I usually start my day by watching one of my comfort shows on repeat before having to slog to work and play gentle, repetitive/comfort games to unwind afterwards. Lately it’s a third run through of King of the Hill for me, and I just picked up some DLC for Powerwash Simulator 2 that I’m enjoying. So similarly low-stakes and low-sensory input.

There’s something about wholesomeness too that’s calming. What’s one of your favorite moments/episodes from this series, if you want to share?

That is baffling. While I get Linux was built on UNIX not sure why they should be lumped together.

You’d probably get more similarity with MacOS troubleshooting and commands. BSD definitely deserves its own focus and should probably have its own comms so it’s not as reliant on GNU-centric publicity. Unfortunately I don’t have significant experience with BSD but more eyes on it in general would help, I think.

Isn’t FreeBSD far more strictly UNIX? And its own kernel? I don’t see why that needs to be parallelized with Linux (which is primarily hobbyist space) since it’s more in line with professional/corporate standards as well, like you’ve pointed out. I’d say be the change you wanna see in the world and make a positive focus on it (and Haiku, like you’ve mentioned before). Would be welcome for sure! /gen /pos
