I love webcomics. Makes me sad to come across a good webcomic that only publishes on Instagram and had no RSS feed. It is upsettingly common.

I wouldn’t consider that worse. At least if they post on twitter I can get an RSS feed via xcancel or other alternative frontends. So far I haven’t found a good/consistent workaround for artists who exclusively post on Instagram or Tiktok.

And it is ad based , so why watch ads to enjoy comics?
I use ad blockers on all my devices, so I haven’t seen a single ad when opening the website.
Even with pihole the ads appear on firefox mobile.

are you familiar with RSS Bridge? it adds a bunch of workarounds to create RSS feeds for websites that don’t support one. there’s unfortunately no working Instagram bridge as far as I know, but it works for TikTok. there used to be a few proxy websites like OffTiktok that opened TikTok posts (and you could set them up to redirect automatically via LibRedirect), but it looks like there are no more, so for the few people that I want to follow there and who don’t post their videos anywhere else, I just use yt-dlp to download the videos and watch them locally. a bit of a pain, I know.

Same. I host a very simple frontend app on my server with yt-dlp backend. Copy-paste URL and that’s it. Don’t even have to download to my phone.

It’s a Docker container called Media Roller (I’m not the dev). I don’t expose it to the outside, just for personal use, so I don’t need to fiddle with apps on my phone.

Yeah … I begrudgingly have WhatsApp because everyone else uses it. I’ve already opted out of FB Marketplace which everyone around my area uses apparently.

It’s not a matter of lazyness, there are quite a few work rounds described even under this post. It’s a matter of principle. The harder companies make it to watch it’s content without a user, the less I’m going to use it. Not jump through hoops to still watch it’s content. Social media has become a cancer and should be avoided like the disease it is. It should be treated with utter contempt.
Remain strong to your stance. All my friends know theres no point to send any videos as most no longer work without an app and are complete eyesore to watch in browser mode and i absolutely refuse to defile my phone with tiktok. So if they actually want to show me a good video, they have to physically come to me and show it from their phone. That kinda guarantees that the video is good enough.

Fair, my bad. I misunderstood. i did interpet it as downloading the app to your phone, as i wasn’t aware that those videos could obviously be downloaded as well.
Seal is a good workaround app for seeing videos behind links you don’t want to open. Sometimes I get Instagram or tiktok links I can’t open, so I just paste the video link into the downloader, watch it once, and then discard it.
If it’s good enough it’ll reach escape velocity

yt-dlp can download videos from tiktok and instagram. That’s what I use when I have to
mpvalso usesyt-dlpwhenever installed, although it is referred to in the docs asyoutube-dlfor historical reasons. You can specify stuff with --ytdl-format (yt-dlp -f equivalent) and --ytdl-raw-options (=thing=thing,anotherthing=anotherthing). Pop in a--ytdl-format=251with a YouTube playlist and you get a nice little music player.Do they not get metadata about your machine even if you use yt-dlp?
