Ok girl, but consider for a moment that the genocide is real, and the shit the gamer gate chuds were mad about…was fake

Unless she’s got a nasty coke habit or something
She had an Opium addiction at one point. Which like, I don’t want to minimize anyone’s struggles with substance abuse, but opium feels like a very bougie addiction to have in the 2020s.
probably because her original fans and subscribers have died of old age.
Nah, her original fans are all way more radical than her. She moved right into Liberal Brunch territory, while the cohort of people who supported her at her peak, have since radicalized further left.
But yeah, girl is definitely coasting on her former (and quickly evaporating) good will
Look, I don’t think she’s a “Genocide loving Zionist”, I think she genuinely thinks what’s happening is bad.
But her response, which essentially amounted to nihilistic resignation and a perceived inability to do anything about it, means she’s giving tacit support by trying to remain neutral on a moving train.
She bemoaned the supposed impossibility of making a video essay on the topic, but such a thing feels incredibly straightforward to me. She could easily have leaned into that feeling of nihilistic resignation, and explored it. What do we do, when met with horrors that are genuinely difficult to comprehend? Idk talk about Camus or some shit! Explore those feelings! Have some curiosity about them!
But she won’t do that, because she’s penned in by her liberal politics, petty bourgeois patreon class position, and persecution complex surrounding the fact that she just can’t log the fuck off of twitter

4·23 hours agoFurthermore, it won’t help much if the DSA is united when a schism occurs with the old Democrats: On its own, the DSA certainly doesn’t have enough supporters to win the election.
This is something DSA has long thought about, and the dominant position in the org is what’s called the “Dirty Break” strategy. Essentially, DSA parasitizes the Democratic ballot line, such that DSA supercedes the Democratic party itself.
Even if Trump is as unpopular as can be (though 40% still remain loyal to him—but that’s just an aside), there will still be enough Democratic voters who were politically shaped during the Cold War and would never vote for anything with “socialism” in its name.
Plenty of Trump voters also voted for Mamdani. The fact of the matter is that, of you give people things that benefit them, and can demonstrate good governance, then you can override that cold war programming without a ton of friction. Especially when the institutions of American liberal democracy are decaying before our eyes

81·24 hours agoI think something interesting about DSA is that it has an internal constellation of caucuses, which are largely ideologically based. There’s a reformist caucus, and anarchist caucus, a Marxist Leninist Caucus, multiple Trotskyist Caucuses, a Maoist Caucus, etc.
So the various mergers and splits that leftist orgs have been doing for decades now essentially get to do them in the sandbox of DSA.
I love their trains, the food is good, it’s a beautiful country.
But also, holy shit, Japan has just never reckoned with its imperial past in the slightest.
If you ever see those tourism promotion photos of mt. Fuji with a pagoda in the foreground, that pagoda was built in the 50s, around the end of the US occupation, to commemorate soldiers who fought in essentially every war that imperial Japan got itself into. It’s very clear political statement.
And I learned this, upon climbing that damn mountain, and reading the plaque in front of the pagoda, only to learn that it was a monument to imperialism the whole time
You’re a deeply stupid person

61·3 days agoYeah this is a “I hate to tell you this, but it does in fact work” situation.
Doing those things won’t fix everything, of course, but they do help. Like, OP should be lucky they have someone to talk to, who’s taking an active interest in their wellbeing
That’s okay, you seem to me to be very much gate keeping and protective of settler colonialism as if it’s something good.
Lmfao what??? You’re doing an awful lot of putting words in my mouth over this. Look, you can just take the L. Being wrong on the internet isn’t the end of the world.
Patiently explaining a definition to you doesn’t mean I endorse the thing I’m defining.
The examples I gave were because they’re current focal points of conjecture and conflicts in the world. But everyone’s gotta arc up because everyone’s got a fucking opinion on China.
But notably, not settler colonialism. I can’t think of why you’d bring it up as an example other than to signal your opinions about China. Because as I’ve repeatedly explained, is not doing settler Colonialism to Taiwan.
You’re the one who seems to be bringing your opinion to this discussion, not me.

4·3 days agoLol no, I’ve made two comments on this thread, both dunking on you
Jesus wouldn’t have had politics we would find legible to us today, because the political landscape is contingent on the material conditions of a given place and time.
It’s certainly interesting that the Bible is a series of documents written on the margins of empire, and that might inform how to think about it today. But Jesus himself would have had political opinions that do not map onto our modern, post-French Revolution, ideas of “left vs right”.
I’m not suggesting that one way or another, because the PRC does not currently have control over Taiwan. I do not know how they would treat the native Taiwanese population, because no such thing has happened.
You just gave me an example of the current Taiwanese government engaging in ethnic cleansing of the native population, though. Which would seem to me, to undermine the assertion that China’s mere intent to invade Taiwan counts as settler-colonialism, when a much more clear-cut example is happening right now, not under PRC rule.
My point is that words mean things. Settler Colonialism isn’t just “when a country I don’t like does a bad thing”, it’s a very specific process of ethnic replacement, carried out in the US and Canada, South Africa, Palestine, Western Sahara, among other places.
But China having poor relations with Taiwan over a civil war that never ended, just isn’t an example of settler colonialism.
I don’t even think that’s an especially good example.
Crimea has a predominantly ethnically Russian, and Russian speaking, population. The Russians aren’t replacing Russians with Russians. Russia did annex Crimea in likely contravention of international law, which we might think is bad. But that doesn’t make it settler-Colonialism.
Now, Russia has been adopting out Ukrainian babies in its occupied territories to Russian families, something Putin is wanted by the ICC for, so that would be a much closer example.
But even that, I feel, isn’t as clear cut an example as Palestine or Western Sahara. Russia hasn’t been putting Ukrainians onto reservations or anything like that. Doing so would compromise the national identity of the Russian Federation as a multi-ethnic state. An identity it relies on for domestic legitimacy. Russia just isn’t framing its invasion of Ukraine as a war of ethnic extermination. They’re explicitly framing Ukrainians as a kind of junior partner in a conception of a “greater Russia” that can stand up to The West.
Ok, but invading a country, or even annexing part of said country does not necessarily mean that the country doing the invading/annexing is doing settler colonialism. They have to explicitly be exterminating or otherwise forcibly removing the native population, with the goal of ethic replacement.
If you want a clear-cut example, beyond Palestine, then Morocco has been settler-colonizing Western Sahara for decades.
I get that’s not as sexy as talking about China/Taiwan relations on Lemmy, but learning about something outside of the usual purview of political discussion on this website certainly wouldn’t hurt.
