I’m automatically side eyeing any “reports of gunfire” from the 4th of July weekend.

Technology•Tesla on Autopilot Smashes Straight Through Garage Door, Driver SaysEnglish
1·2 months agoThey have had that capability for at least 7 years now so if it makes you feel any better, it’s been getting tested for a while. Interesting side note, if the car does fuck up and damage another car or injure someone, the TOS says that the owner of the vehicle is liable and Tesla has no culpability.

3·2 months agoI don’t know if what you’re saying is true but refusing to use technology that would prevent accidents because it will be more difficult to explain the cause of the remaining accidents is a crazy take. And the other self driving car companies use lidar so the NTSB isn’t unfamiliar with the technology.

1·2 months agoFWIW Google/Alphabet/Waymo seem to be doing a decent job and seem to really be doing the work to deliver solid (level 4?) self driving. Tesla is just so unserious and are happy to hype their shit up and let consumers believe the hype which leaves people treating their “self-driving” car as if it is really capable of what the average person would envision when you use the term “self driving “. And then it drives through a wall like Wiley E Coyote.

3·2 months agoThe New Republic is reporting that we’re also gonna hand over 300 billion dollars to Iran. And that’s not just releasing their own funds back to them; that’s completely separate from the frozen Iranian funds.

politics •Trump asking Congress for symbolic expunging of his two impeachments
1·2 months agoIt’s like in school instead of learning that showing that you’re upset just encourages more teasing, he just got his dad to sue any bullies.
ETA: not that he’s being bullied here
Here in the good ole USA money and politics are the same thing. If you have the political will, you can get the money and if you have the money, you can but the political will.
That said, didn’t Elmo have a beef with the fucking United Nations because he said he’d pay the 6 or 7 billion to end world hunger if the could prove that it’s possible and then they produced a detailed plan and he quibbled and but-akshually’ed his way to a reneg because he never intended to do jack shit for anyone other than himself?

17·2 months agoHundreds of thousands of people SO FAR.
I’ve seen estimates in the tens of millions by 2030.
If I’m ever single again I may get one just to help filter out closet conservatives.

3·2 months agoI would not because I like to be able to browse all the available options and read the labels. I’m also fussy about my produce selection. I’ll only use grocery delivery for produce as a last resort , like if I’m stuck at home sick.
xtr0n@sh.itjust.workstoMicroblog Memes•Stores are making record profits while complainingEnglish
8·2 months agoWhere I live there is always a line for the self checkout. The self checkout machines are slower than the manned checkout machines, you can only pick up one item at a time, scan it, place it in the bagging area and pause for a second before touching anything else or else the whole system has a meltdown and then you need a person to come fix it. A checker at a normal scanner is at least 5x faster than even the best person at the self checkout. And as an added bonus, you also get a camera in your face and monitor showing the recording so you can see unflattering videos of yourself while working to appease the fussy machine. Also, the ergonomics are shit if you have more than a small basket of stuff.
I think they all deliberately manufactured consent for this bullshit by dramatically understaffing the regular checkouts for at least a year before installing the self checkouts. But that part may be a bit conspiratorial given the ultra slim margins on groceries.

I’ve mostly moved in the same sort of bubbles as OP (I think) and while it wasn’t super common, I definitely met people in that bubble, who had to be on the other side of the curve. I don’t have many funny stories about it; people struggling to keep up with their peers in competitive environments are more often sad or frustrating.
OK, there was one kinda funny thing where a PM at a household name tech company cornered me (an engineer with a math degree) to emphatically detail his “system” for craps. I tried so hard to explain why it’s impossible to have a “system” for predicting the outcome of dice rolls, he just wouldn’t hear it. I later told a friend about the encounter who replied “that ought to be a fireable offense”.
That wasn’t the dumbest thing that dude ever said nor the reason l flipped the bozo bit but it was the funniest.
To clarify , he was talking about playing in a casino and wasn’t talking about using altered dice or doing slight of hand where you’re not really throwing the dice.

Mildly Infuriating•WA man accused of hurling rock at Hawaiian monk seal has been doxxed, lawyer saysEnglish
25·2 months agoSo his lawyer pinky promises he was horrifically beat up, but was just too noble to press charges? lol
So this dude is absolutely awful and deserves all the hate he’s getting but there was video of the beat down (lemme try and find it, one sec). It isn’t worth pressing charges because no one in Hawaii will ever convict the perpetrator. It would be political suicide for a prosecutor to even try to advance a case. I think a local politician (state senator? Mayor?) even commended the guy.
ETA: found it! Apologies for the shit source (YouTube & NY Post) but it also includes video of the state senator giving a commendation with a delightfully amused attorney in the background
Similarly, don’t expect much help with history questions in pub quiz from someone with a history degree.
“You have a whole ass degree, why can’t you tell me when Garfield was president!!?!?!??”
“It’s not like that … my thesis was on medieval crop rotation “

The only mystery I see is why the fuck has the governor not declared a special election? What’s the GOP gonna do? Sue? Ok let them give proof of life in court.
