  • But they’re sentient too by your definition

My gripe is not with death but with suffering. I was comparing the lives of farm animals (most meat and diary across the world comes from factory farms) with how modern agriculture kills small animals.

In the latter, the small animals are just living out their lives oblivious to the tractor or the pesticide that’s going to kill it almost instantly. So it’s less suffering.

There are levels of sentience too. I haven’t formalized or measured it precisely. But I know it’s not all equal. I would rather torture and kill an ant than a monkey.

just as the drunk driver recklessly kills

It’s an engineering challenge. We can reduce it a lot through organic farming that doesn’t use tilling, burning of crops etc.

sorry if I’m pushing too much, I enjoy philosophical discussion

hahah no worries. I enjoy it too.

  • There are already excellent answers. We can attack it from another angle and analyze what causes the fear of death.

    1. Fear of separation

Death means leaving everything behind. The life you have built. Friends, family, home, your identity, and your body—even the clothes you have on.

    1. Fear of pain

Death is usually accompanied by a lot of physical pain. We fear pain and live our lives running away from it.

We can use philosophy and deep thought to alleviate both.

Everything you are being “separated” from were only in your imagination. There were no “you” or “your people” or things to begin with. There is just reality. You have categorized sensory information as “this is me. This is my body, this is family etc.” If you continue this line of thought, you will realise nothing special happens during death. You are still a part of reality in a different form like a cloud that becomes rain.

Next is the fear of pain. Pain is a protective mechanism in your brain. It is a signal telling you to stay away from something or to draw attention somewhere. It’s nothing more. If you realise this at a deep level and keep your mind at peace even in extreme pain, your brain will not perceive it as a threat. Instead it will release endorphins to reduce the pain.

I know what I have said is not easy. It requires a lifetime of mental training and meditation. But it is possible.

And there are many stages to this. First is to not fear death during normal life. Next is to not fear it in the presence of a great threat. And the last is during the actual process of dying. Each stage is harder than the previous.

  • Bioengineer yourself into Zaan from farscape? a intelligent plant species

    I imagine something like that.

I’m sure you have seen the previous posts on the calculus of death in food production

I am aware of this argument. I don’t think I have an answer that is logical or that will satisfy you. I suffered a lot as a child when I saw a fishes suffocating to death and a chicken being killed infront of me. I felt terrible while eating it too. So I’ve been mostly plant based since then.

I haven’t had any health issues for decades. Nor have I needed any supplements.

I eat organic, local and wild as much as possible. Minimizing the deaths from modern agriculture. These deaths feel quite different to me. They are small animals just living out those lives and they are suddenly killed by pesticides or crushed by tilling. It’s minimal suffering. I would prefer such a death compared to living and dying as a farm animal.

drink drivers don’t intend to kill people in motor collisions

In case of drunk drivers they are intentionally impairing their motor skills, reflexes for a good time. They are intentionally entering circumstances that increase chances of harming others around them. So I usually condemn getting intoxicated unless it’s in a safe setting and for medical reasons.
