A few things to be aware of:

Seed is the number 1 way that pathogens, insects and weeds are transmitted around the globe.

Do NOT save seed from unhealthy looking plants. Many viruses, bacteria, and fungi can be transmitted via seed.

Make sure you know the proper sanitation procedures before sharing seeds. For example all tomatoes seeds need to be extracted via acid extraction to prevent transmission of bacterial canker. Pepper seed need to be treated with a TSP bath to eliminate TMV. All cucurbits need to be treated with a peroxide to eliminate bacterial fruit blotch.

Be sure you know 100% what you are harvesting is the seed from the plant. Many weed seeds look identical to many common garden varieties.

Know the basic reproductive biology of the species you want to save. This can help to unintentional outcrossing and mixing of varieties…

Please save seeds from F1 hybrids. Selection from amanteur seedsavers/breeders have maintained/generated some of the most important traits we have. Feel free to make your own crosses introgressing important resistant genes into landraces.

Before sharing carefully inspect the seed to ensure you have no unpleasant hitchhikers in the seed. An observational microscope can help with this.

I have done it a few times over the years but never on my main driver. Until last month… I bought a new laptop for my business and immediately installed Linux on the entire drive. I never initialized the win 11 that came with it.

What’s even better is that 45% of the production is for ethanol. Almost all of this is used for blending with gasoline in vehicles. A massive transition toward electric vehicles and public transit would eliminate the need for this. So 45% of the land used for corn production is not needed.

The pathogen is persistent. The oocyst (transmission form) can survive in soil for a very long time (months or even years).

It’s also very small and can be carried by wind or water etc.

The host range for the pathogen is unknown. It is found very rarely in animals so adequate screening is very difficult.

Genetically it undergoes sexual reproduction. This means that the population is naturally heterozygous and constantly changing. Unlike bacterial or viral infections you can not isolate a strain and link infections. This makes determining a source extremely complicated.

Most cases of infection are theorized to be mild.
