Psychologically speaking, check ins at the beginning of the meeting are important to create connections in the group and make people feel more comfortable to speak up later. It’s literally just behavioural science.
I do it for 2 reasons:
- Make sure everyone is supposed to be there. I’ve had people show up to meetings that weren’t supposed to be there and everyone else thought they were with one of the other groups in on the meeting.
- Figure out if the other side tried sneaking in a lawyer. If they bring a lawyer, we need to bring ours.
Also, it helps to know who you are talking to.

In my experience 99% of the time people feel just as apprehensive as you and don’t really care. Now, if the entire point of the meeting is to introduce a team, please, just fucking cooperate. I’ve worked with too many people who refuse to participate on the meetings, and they make workflows so unnecessarily obstructive. I want to finish my task and go home as well, just pay attention to the communication tools, I don’t care how much of a mystery you like to portray yourself as. Specially if our work depends on each other’s coordination.
