The movie used seven decades of tricks to take away her powers so we never actually got to see her be super. Every 5 minutes another thing takes away her powers. Even in the final battle the climactic ending of the movie she’s shot with a kryptonite arrow and has to fight at a handicap. It’s just a piss poor movie.
The acting was great, the story concept was great, but the scene to scene plot was just abysmal.
So the movie is actually just Girl.
It’s why so many of the DC stuff is so boring. These are superpowers that have minimum viable characters wrapped around them. The only interesting thing that can happen to them is changing their powers.
I watched this movie, and they really tried to make it interesting. She starts as a total screwup and arcs towards greatness. But none of the motivation makes any sense and so most of her decisions come down to “if she didn’t do this the plot wouldn’t move forward.” Frankly, that’s how almost every superhero movie feels now.
I think the problem with this movie is that a) it wasn’t for kids and b) it wasn’t for manchildren who wear clothes with Batman logos on them. Not a lot of market left after that.
It wasn’t a great movie, but it wasn’t that bad either. The issue isn’t the movie. The issue is that people, like myself, rarely go to the movie theater anymore. It has to be of significant quality of a movie (think: The Matrix, The Odyssey, Spaceballs 2 :D ) to even consider going to deal with the people, the high price, etc.
Myself and my wife go to the theater about once a month, sometimes twice depending on the release schedule to see all the new horror movies and things like The Odyssey and Disclosure Day and the theaters both opening weekend and later are mostly full every single time. I live in a small college town not even a big city. Sure numbers are down but it’s not a ghost town people seem to think.
I think it’s a mix of reasons, the biggest one obviously being the movie is mediocre. But I think the other big reason is that Supergirl just isn’t a franchise most people care about. People would flock to the cinema for Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, maybe even Aquaman because he’s better known. But a story about Superman’s sister running around in space? Ehhhh…

To add another reason, Hollywood producers seem quite keen to rehash the same movie or type of movie over and over. They remake movies literally multiple times. And they have nearly zero original movie ideas that they promote. Sure, superhero movies since Iron Man has done fairly well – because the comic book nerds finally grew up and have their own money to spend. But that isn’t going to last, especially in this post-pandemic, greed-ridden, unregulated economy.
None of this should be a surprise to any studio exec or producer.
I think people don’t care as much about franchise anymore either. Obsession is projected to do better than Supergirl, and at a fraction of the budget.
People just want good movies.

I think it is more base than that. The whole appeal of Superman is that he is the most powerful man not powerful human, so sharing the power with a woman delutes how the character make us feel. This is why not all female superheroe movies are a flop. She just needs to have different powers.
I had a free ticket to see a movie last weekend and I used it to watch the Hadestown musical cause literally everything else was a waste of time. It still cost me $25 for concessions BTW.
Side note, I had already seen Supergirl and The Odyssey back when they came out.

Supergirl is not well known enough to be a must-see, especially when only one rebooted DCU film has come out so far. The track record for the DCU pre-reboot is still likely hurting Gunns universe.
It also doesn’t help that the Chuds crawl out of their basements to complain loudly whenever a film stars a woman.
I bought a projector for what it would’ve cost for me to take myself and my kids to the movies 3 times. It’s actually really nice to enjoy the classics outdoors/indoors, wherever.
We have watched so many movies we’ve upgraded to a better speaker, and got a mini popcorn machine.
Beyond worth it.

Ours is 8 oz(1 cup kernels) but it’s a true popcorn machine because it does the heating, and the turning. I really like it. It’s enough to feed ~10 people with a little bowl, and it only takes ~10 minutes so it’s easy to make seconds to share, and I’ve never had anyone have room for thirds.

I’ve gone to the theater about a dozen times so far this year and only during Project Hail Mary in the full IMAX theater on opening weekend was some teen on his phone for a few minutes towards the end and got kicked out. Every other time everyone has been respectful.
On top of it costing too much, it’s usually full of assholes on their phones, it stops me bringing my own snacks/costs way to much to buy them there, cannot pause for bathroom breaks and I usually pay for parking.
But the biggest reason… I cannot smoke cones at the theatre, fuck that.

It’s definitely dull and uninspired, which is a shame because I love the Tom King run it’s based on. I liked Milly Alcock as Kara, she nails that disaffected youth feel from the book, but the dialogue, camerawork, and action scenes just don’t land.
I turned it off halfway through and maybe I’ll pick it up later. It’s head and shoulders better than the Snyderverse stuff, but at least had the decency to be bad enough to make me angry about it. This is just meh.

Supergirl opened to $37.1 million domestically and $62.6 million worldwide, against a breakeven point well north of $400 million.
The thing that always gets me with these productions. Why can’t these big studios, operating at this size and scale, figure out how to produce a movie for less than half a billion dollars?
It seems so absurd to insist “You’ll never see another Supergirl movie in your lifetime, because we lost $230M on this fumbled art project” when a movie like Obsession can be produced for a scant $750k. And even an action-heavy monster mash like Godzilla Minus One can come in at under $10M.
This, as people scream about “The Death of Hollywood” in no small part thanks to the collapsing demand for practical effects, the shrinking cast sizes, and the Netflix model of production that refuses to order more than 10 episodes in a season. Abysmal days for the Silver Screen if this keeps up.
I don’t really see how that’s possible for big studios at this point. In order to get costs down they would need to go into production with locked scripts and workflows. Big studios need to bring in money very quickly to stay afloat which creates a disastrous feedback loop. They would honestly need to not make money for about 3yrs while they slowed down and adjusted the foundation, which would bankrupt them. It’s already a runway train that can’t be stopped.
Indie/small movies have a better chance, because there is no pressure on them. If it fails it’s usually on the smaller few who foot the bill for the movie.
Superman was a really fun movie, but it felt pretty obvious it’s gonna be mostly downhill from here. But I’m totally fine with that, I don’t want another franchise that tries to make me constantly watch just so I can keep up. Maybe they’ll hit on another winner, but I’m not holding my breath. And in this case I’d definitely say the actress was robbed. The story, pacing, and general feel of the movie were where it fell flat for me.
It was slightly more interesting than I assumed it would be, but that’s a low bar.
I tried watching it yesterday and could not make it past about 15 mins.
I generally like comic marvel even DC films. This was the first ever movie (I’m nearing 40) I could not watch through. What a boring shit show. And I can’t even say what they are doing wrong.
The last supergirl was a major flop as well. 40+ years ago…
