I thought it was like pumped hydro but using sand! Now I’m disappointed. Still cool though, but storing heat is not a long-term solution, is it?

Yes it is. The heat from the sand battery can be used throughout the winter. All you need is good insulation.

I think of it as a simpler alternative to pumped hydro when all you need is heat. It kind of dumb to waste the great pumped hydro resources that can store electricity on heating stuff. So, this can cover their heating needs during bad weather, and they can used pumped hydro for the rest.

Removing industrial and transportation, heating represents is more than half of the energy use in Finland. Being able to store it and use later - particularly in district heating applications - is definitely a long-term solution

IIRC it can store heat for months.

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn’t have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title format

Post title should mirror the news source title. If you don’t like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.

URL format

Post URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.

[Opinion] prefix

Opinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn’t explictly endorse.

Country prefix

Country prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn’t clearly mention the country.
