False dichotomy? The host pretends that the only options are “We need to keep I.C.E.” and “we abolish I.C.E. and let children be raped”. There are of course plenty of other options, but he just keeps shouting this point as if there aren’t.

4·5 days agoGreat that you started reading again! I had also been on a hiatus for a few years and picked it up again last winter. It took me a while to find stuff I enjoy reading and sometimes I still choose books that aren’t right for me, but I’ve learned that it’s okay to just not finish a book. If I’m not enjoying it, why continue? There are so many books out there, there is bound to be a better one.

4·5 days agoStill reading Helm by Sarah Hall. It’s good. I’d never heard of her before until I saw this book at the local bookshop and was intrigued. I’m glad I bought it and will probably read more by her.
It’s a slow read though. Partly because there are more words I don’t know than in other books, and partly because I just wasn’t to savour it.

2·6 days agoAh, I didn’t know he had explained that, thanks. That’s a very manipulative way to go about things. Glad it was discovered.

2·6 days agoguys and gals who have not had the ability to read or predict social cues nor understand how some acts will look like for outsiders.
I guess the dev in question here is either young or on the spectrum. Both are alright and we all make mistakes.
Definitely, even if old and neurotypical, we all make mistakes. And that’s okay.
I’m not sure how much of a mistake this was, though. Why would they hide the banlist in such a way if they weren’t worried about social repercussions? Wouldn’t they just proudly announce it as a great new feature, especially if they lacked social tact? It seems to me the only reason to obscure your actions like this is precisely because you’re worried you might stir up a shitstorm.
But maybe there’s another explanation for hiding the list that I can’t think of.
Thymos@discuss.tchncs.detoThe Internet Is Beautiful@lemmy.world•I built a free game where you try to beat a couch at timing the market. Over 80k plays later, the couch usually wins.
6·8 days agoWell, my feedback: it wasn’t clear to me what “the couch” meant, only when I read it here in your explanation. I clicked around a bit on your website but couldn’t find it. Maybe I’m just dumb (a couch can’t do anything, of course, but then how did it buy stock in the first place?), but I don’t know much about stock trading so I thought it was a term I didn’t know.
Other than that it plays well and gets the point across, which is nice in a game. I also like the look, well done.

Yes it does. It tells us the kind of person this is, namely someone who doesn’t give a fuck about anything or anyone else. Therefore his opinion is worthless.
And in case you haven’t noticed: everything is about climate change.

4·11 days agoI just finished Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. It was a fun read, interesting to read something that old and I really liked Austen’s sense of humor. I don’t think I will read another one of her books though, at least not soon, because the whole “oh my goodness, when can I see him again, he asked me to dance with him” schtick was too much for me.
And right after that I started Helm by Sarah Hall. I’m not far in yet, but it’s really interesting. It’s about a wind (the meteorological phenomenon, not flatulence) whose name is Helm.
The only problem is I have a serious cold at the moment, so I can’t read now. (This comment took me ten minutes to type in between sneezes.) I hope tomorrow’s better.

5·19 days agoI’m now reading Rebecca. It is good. Well-written, interesting story.
On the one hand I totally understand the main character’s feelings and actions, but on the other I sometimes want to scream at her to do something, anything other than what she is doing. This is a good lesson for myself…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What country do you live in and where would you choose to live if you could?
2·26 days agoI live there. Car-free neighbourhoods are very rare here. I live in a big city and there isn’t a single one. So don’t get your hopes up.
Also, the Netherlands is very densely populated. It’s hard to really get away from society and even in national parks it’s hard to find a place where you don’t hear the constant background noise of traffic. And it’s only getting worse.

4·27 days agoI’m currently reading The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie. It’s my third Poirot novel after Murder on the Orient Express and Murder on the River Nile. I think it will be my last.
They’re fun books and well-written, but also very much alike. And that Poirot guy is getting on my nerves…
After this I have Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier waiting for me. I read it when I was a teenager when I found a copy from the forties lying around and even though it was a little too hard for me, I remember liking it. I’m curious to see how I’ll like it now.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's the weirdest thing in english?
5·30 days agoI think what is exceptional for English is that negation and forming a question require a modal verb. You can say “I love apples” but not “*I not love apples”, nor “*Love I apples?”. This is rare in a language. (An exception for negation could be “Apples, I love not”, but this does not sound like everyday speech.)

4·30 days agoI often go to what are called little libraries. They’re just small book cases outside that are freely accessible to anyone. You can borrow books, sometimes keep the books and donate books. There a lot of bad books in them, but also a lot of wonderful titles to be found. You can find more info, including a map with locations, here.

Gaming@lemmy.ml•Epic Games CEO says it’s ‘really irresponsible’ of Steam to make studios disclose AI use | VGC - 25th Jun 2026
17·1 month ago“If you want to launch a game, and get it as widely publicized as possible, you’ve got to put it on Steam so people can wish list it, and if you want to play it on Steam, then you have to get this Scarlet Letter of AI attached to your product
You don’t have to, just don’t use A.I. Easy.
It’s available on archive.org. I might read this next, thanks!

Marriage is something for the wealthy. If you live on welfare in my country and you get married or share a household, you get less money. Also, if you want to marry a foreigner, you need to earn a minimum amount of money, which is unobtainable for a lot of people. This is on purpose to make sure we get less “poor foreigners” here. So marriage is not and never will be for me.

Back in university I had to read two books a week, that was tough. To stay concentrated I would sit at a desk or table with bright lights on.
