Hunter X Hunter is totally different though, I agree. Hisoka is meant to be predatory and kinda terrifying.

Terraria. Seriously. Do a blind play through without a wiki. Super duper fun. It can be short or hundreds of hours, depending on your style. Great for groups as well, as it requires a surprising amount of team work.

I think Terraria has a really good approach to this.

Your first playthrough is on “normal” mode. Boss fights aren’t about skill, you don’t have to be on your toes constantly, etc. — except, that doesn’t matter. Because your first playthrough is hopefully blind and without the wiki, meaning you’ll have really bad, inefficient gear, and most of the challenge will come from finding and understanding good gear and how the world works before you can even find and beat bosses. Normal mode on your first playthrough has its own kind of challenge.

After that you will know how to progress and want more challenge and excitement for your second playthrough. Enter “expert” mode. New loot, new super powerful cool accessories, everything is way harder, even basic mobs hit twice as hard. Now everything is about staying on your toes, showing your skills in boss fights, meticulously crafting plans — but you’re rewarded for it by a new experience and what feels like a new, more exciting Terraria. If you get tired of expert mode (I’m gonna say 200–300 hours of playtime later), there’s the ridiculous “hard” mode. And “hardcore.” Endless possibilities.

But everyone is given a chance with normal mode, which is really extremely easy. Everyone gets a chance to get to know the game. But you are rewarded with the full game, in a sense, for playing the proper difficulty.

Fyi, Reaper and Bitwig both have excellent, native Linux support. If you’re willing to re-learn a DAW, both of those are great choices. Reaper is by far the best mixing & mastering DAW out there, IMHO. Bitwig is great for composition and has awesome, intuitive modulation features, as well as great stock plugins and MPE support.

The other thing you refer to – concept vs. actual reality, if I understand you correctly – is, of course, a very valid and big debate in linguistics; prescriptive definitions vs. descriptive definitions. That is why I linked the OED, since it is a historical dictionary. Or do you mean philosophical concept vs. physical reality?

My comment was about that prescriptive, philosophical definition of the word. But the study you link shows that empathy is, indeed, much bigger than that.

This is the distinction between empathy and sympathy. Sympathy is a far older word and a synonym of compassion and what you describe in your comment. Empathy is a concept from aesthetics and psychology, though, (actually derived from the German Einfühlung circa 1909) and is really an intellectual activity. Real empathy is, indeed, taught.

If you want to learn more about empathy I can highly recommend Theodor Lipp’s Leitfaden der Psychologie (a work of philosophy, not psychology as the title would suggest): Internet Archive [German].

Fwiw try out Reaper. Much easier and more professional than ardour, but unfortunately not open source. It supports a custom JavaScript system for making your own plugins on the fly, though, and is crazy powerful.

The thing about this that really makes me ashamed of the democratic establishment is the depiction of the girl on the right vs on the left. This post is literally trying to marginalize progressives. Just look at lemmy, half the progressives here are cishet conputer programmers and Linux nerds in their 40s. This post is trying to enforce a harmful stereotype to make progressives seem like a smaller, less influencial, more radicalized group. It’s already playing into bigotry: the progressive is shown as younger (ageism), with darker skin (racism), more “radical” views, as a drug addict., etc; enforcing the bias that progressives are somehow irresponsible young’uns with unrealistic world-views. Fuck this shit. Never thought I’d see something so obviously bigoted on Lemmy.

I honestly think deodorant is 70% advertisement. People were fine without it a century ago. BO doesn’t bother me, except after intense exercise or if the person doesn’t shower, those are the only genuine use cases I can imagine. Otherwise—meh, a five minute shower every morning and after exercise would result in less consumerism and is preferable IMHO.
