Pretty normal stuff
For humans it is normal. The “simple” function as you call it, is actually the foundation for consciousness.

Brain hunger is a very good description IMO for what is probably a conditioned unhealthy dependency.

I think this is the general formula:
The Serotonin decides (expected reward). The expectation of biggest reward in the shortest span of time with the least amount of effort and sacrifice of other things.
If time is prolonged, the reward needs to be bigger.
Being hungry moves you towards the food, not being hungry will move you towards the TV show.
If he is not that hungry he might choose the TV, but if he gets hungry while watching he might change his mind and go for the food, despite being in the middle of the show.
If money is short the dish will decline in priority, especially for people with functioning frontal lobes.
But there can be many many factors that are weighed not consciously but emotionally. Research shows we are way more guided by emotions than we think, we do what our emotions tell us, and then we rationalize it afterwards to convince our consciousness that it was in control all the time, despite it wasn’t.
A significant part of our emotional state is actually controlled by bacteria in our stomach! So it is not entirely the brain alone as another comment claims. But it is signals that are sent to the brain, so in that way the brain remains the ultimate decision maker.

maybe we shouldn’t allow USA to decide European foreign policy? Just a thought.

Absolutely, although China can’t match Nvidia yet, they can now make chips that are good enough for 90% of the tasks.
Nvidia can no longer sell their second rate products developed specially for China anymore either.

Due to Western export restrictions, ASML is only allowed to export some of these machines to China; the most modern equipment is subject to a complete blockade.
In the past quarter, 14 percent of the machines that ASML sold went to China.
Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.
Preventing one of your biggest customers (China) from getting the equipment they need forces them to make it themselves.
Now China can make their own DUV lithography machines of similar quality to the ones they can get from ASML.
And obviously it won’t stop there, China will continue to improve, and probably in a few years compete with ASML on the high end EUV equipment too.
My wife uses Debian, but I love her anyway. ❤️

That is simply not true, stock prices are all about the profits. Just not only the current profits but also expected future profits.
But regarding the stock price of SK Hynix, I recently heard an analyst claim that to make a full return on current stock prices for some RAM companies, they’d have to continue with current record profits for a 1000 years!!
People just don’t always know what they are doing, and some buy wildly overpriced stock, because their delusions make them think the stock can magically only go up.
Tesla has been wildly overpriced by a factor of 10 for years. Because enough people believed the FSD/robotaxi/AI bullshit Musk continues to promise.
So even when the stock market overwhelmingly believe huge profits will come, it may never happen. And when the market realize that there will never be profits to justify the stock prize, the stock will plummet.

Fuck religious fanaticism, or rather fanaticism in general.

How is it the saying goes?
Play stupid games and win amazing prizes.
I think that’s how the MAGA sycophants think it is.
What happened to the infamous stiff upper lip in UK?
Apart from the moronic title the video seems very relevant to people living in UK.

The US is 50 countries in a trench coat.
Not really since the constitutions doesn’t allow any state to secede, they have abandoned their independence and sovereignty.
There are so called state rights, except of course the Republicans shit on that when they are in power, and complain about it wildly when they are not.
Republicans behave like spoiled children, and half the population is doing the same.

Especially when he was elected for a 2nd term.

2026-1789=237 years.
Close enough. And yes the idea of states maintaining some autonomy is not the problem. EU has the same and even more protection of the rights of member states, completely without the democratic shortcomings of USA.

Voting, especially federal, in the US is far from fair,
Doesn’t change the fact that Psychopathy was elected over boring to gran Republicans majority in the the Senate and the house and they won the presidency.
that’s not a mistake because of a bad voting system, that is systematic endorsement of psychopathic behavior by the American population.
You can make a thousand excuses, but they don’t change that one simple fact.

True, which is why Americans should have solved their democratic deficit decades ago, instead of first considering after they are at risk of losing it altogether.
The effect is well known, and the American founding fathers chose that idiotic system ON PURPOSE!!! Because they wanted a strong government with the ability to take action.
They can be excused for not knowing better, as democracy wasn’t as well understood back then. But USA has had 250 years to modify it towards a fairer more representative democracy.
I freaking learned about it in public school in Denmark in the 70’s!!! It’s been common knowledge for probably a century.

According to international law, a sovereign country has a right to self determination.
The responsibility is 100% on the Americans, also to prevent outside influence from Russia, which they have completely failed to do.
USA has tried to influence elections in Europe several times in latter years, and that is absolutely not welcome, and it is against international law.

The majority are not fascists,
Voting says otherwise when they voted this shit in all the way to majorities in the Senate, house and presidency.
They may not be fascists, but they condone all the symptoms of fascism in their voting.

the protests have been the largest in American history
Did it change anything? Were there any serious demands? And when absolutely nothing happened, did people increase the efforts?
No to both, Americans went home thinking they’d done their due diligence. After all the actual acute problems mostly hit minorities, and everything will hopefully be fine after the next election.
You can whitewash this however you want, the end result remains that the Trump administration is continuing unhindered by any part of the American society and “checks and balances” that clearly don’t work.
Kudos to the ones that tried, but they don’t change that USA is continuing the decent the Americans have voted for. Giving insane Republicans the majority in the house the senate and the Presidential position.
As the sycophants say. 3 strikes and you’re out!! The American population has done it as decisively as is possible. There are no ifs or buts about it. The mentality of the American people is clear. And it is the absolute worst of all democracies in the world together with Israel, which is also a country of delusional religious fanatics.
I haven’t used reddit for many years, but this is probably not a good development for the internet (or humanity), if it means people use AI instead of reddit.
