        Months after the ICE shootings in Minnesota, a federal probe remains elusive

        Months after federal immigration agents shot and killed two people and wounded a third in separate incidents during the ICE surge in Minneapolis, the status of the federal investigations into the three shootings remains an open question.

        In the case of Alex Pretti, a U.S. citizen killed by Border Patrol agents, the Department of Homeland Security told NPR in a statement that the Justice Department is leading an investigation. The DOJ, however, did not respond to NPR’s request for comment.

        In the case of Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, a Venezuelan immigrant who was shot by an ICE officer and survived, DHS told NPR an internal investigation is underway.

        As for Renee Macklin Good, a U.S. citizen killed by ICE officer Jonathan Ross, DHS said in a statement “the matter remains under investigation.”

      On the one hand, states do need a kick in the ass to remind them that arresting federal agents for wrongdoing is in fact a good thing. On the other, cops are pretty bad at policing their own internally, let alone other units. Even if they’re competent in their attempts to maintain a presence, it will be a massive drain on local resources. I feel like any police presence will need to come with full support of a states attorney general to recoup money spent from fed.

        There are a lot of people out there that aren’t current LEO that would love a job where they could investigate and arrest federal agents that have broken the law. Just have them direct the braindead badges

          Coupled with the local resources drain is the legal drain when ICE’s budget is used to fight every single charge and impose maximum delay of justice. That much money can inflict a lot of damage on judge’s time, the local attorney’s time, and result in temporary rulings that have a silencing effect. They cannot hire enough people to spend all the money they received, so they’re draining it via corruption, contracts they don’t need, bribing local police units, and legal representation.

      I reported people dressed as ICE taking someone in a parking lot to my state police and they said it’s a federal matter. It’s as fascist as it gets.

        That’s one instance, we all have to keep trying. It really depends on the state, who’s answering the phone and who it gets sent to for it to be handled.

      Under the change, responsibility for investigating cases involving federal immigration officers would likely fall to Homeland Security Investigations, an arm of ICE, effectively leaving the agency to investigate itself, according to guidance circulated among F.B.I. and ICE agents.

      It’s just a scheme to be even less accountable.
