privacy•A U.S. Citizen Deleted His Phone’s Data (via duress passcode). Now He Faces a Felony Charge.
302·16 hours agoThey destroyed their own private information that might prove them guilty of a crime during an unreasonable search and seizure, therefore they’re guilty of a different crime.
No entrapment at all.
Oh, and it wasn’t even the person, it was law enforcement that erased the person’s phone through arguably careless handling.
/s in case it isn’t obvious.

43·17 hours agoI’m not pro-Netflix, but not encrypting a high quality copy of your unreleased big budget movie is a bonehead move on the part of the producer.
My non legally binding judgement would be a couple of hundred against Netflix for the loss of the hard drive.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•India’s education minister resigns in victory for Cockroach youth movement protests (over medical school exam leak/selling scandal)English
2·4 days agoThe term “leak” is an understatement.
Think more along the lines of “exam cheating scandal” for something like the SAT on steroids that’s administered by the government.
And that one exam dictates whether you get accepted to an elite medical school that can lift you and your family out of the poverty, that is most of India, if you’re talented enough.
But instead, the exam papers are sold to expensive coaching schools for the wealthy, leaving even those with the greatest talent without a chance.
“orphans” would imply “others”.
In the case of noise pollution, unnecessary energy consumption contributing to climate change, hot water discharge into water sources, in the end, it’s everyone paying the price so that someone can generate AI slop, that is intellectual theft of everyone’s work in art, literature, code, etc.

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•India’s education minister resigns in victory for Cockroach youth movement protests (over medical school exam leak/selling scandal)English
33·6 days agoIt’s just one incident of many exam leaking/selling scandals for life-changing access to elite education, but this one actually resulted in some measure of justice.
With youth unemployment at 9.9%, competition for any path to a better life is fierce.
Young people have committed suicide over having to take the exam again
The national exam problem appears to be endemic: According to this article, there have been 152 major exam leaks since 2014.
The leaks benefit those who can afford expensive elite “coaching centres” who are the financial incentive for the exam thefts, i.e. India’s wealthy and powerful.

Science@mander.xyz•Long Presumed Dead, a Thriving Coral Reef Is Discovered in West Africa
5·10 days ago…the (1960s) researchers shrugged off the discovery at the time, burying the find in a brief paragraph in a 130-something-page report.
They may have wanted the reef to survive through obscurity, knowing that their own survey was to “discover potentially trawlable seabeds”.
