China becoming an industrialized country and the people there slowly getting to a higher standard of living is actually a good thing for us humanists for whom all humans have equal rights.

The problem is just that we need to migrate our thinking from a colonial exploitive mindset to a more sustainable one. The US can in principle just rebuild all the industry it lost and everything is fine until the oil finally runs out.
But the EU needs to start accepting that they are not rich on natural resources and that the countries which are, are becoming less reliant on imports. That means that the EU will run out of things to give in exchange for resources. If resources can’t be bought anymore, what is already there needs to be recycled to almost 100%. And no bloc can long-term be dependent on energy imports because when everyone is industrialized, everyone has basically unlimited use for energy.

The solution is self-sufficiency on a bloc level. China, Russia, and the US should have no problems being their own blocs. Everyone else needs to overcome the disputes with their neighbors and create or join a bloc.

To be fair: Yes, we do have that pipeline. But we do not have long-term strategic government funding of strategically important industries - especially not Dutch ones. China tries to plan a century ahead (and seems to actually be able to plan a few decades ahead). No western government seems to plan further ahead than an election cycle.

A centralized guaranteed stable government has different opportunities to plan ahead than a government which has to primarily care about being reelected. Our simulation of democracy isn’t free. The massive election theater and lobbying comes with huge price tags (which are mostly invisible to the public until no one can afford to have kids anymore).

The Dutch government forced China to make these machines themselves by enforcing the embargo demanded by the US.
Now, China does exactly that. Then they scale up until they have strategic overproduction. Then the surplus gets thrown on the global market for cheap. Then ASML dies.
Goal: Prevent China from getting the tech.
Actual effect: The west becomes dependent on China for the tech.

That’s why it’s not rape. They probably offered him a deal and his lawyer made him take it.

The article is about AI worms. And the thumb is what an AI image generator thought, AI worms could look like.

It is - and tons of bugs are just about fucking it up or just not doing it at all. Incomplete or faulty parsing and validation of untrusted input is absurdly common. It got better in the past decades, but most software developers write worse code than AI by now (not me though; obviously, I am still better than the best AI).

We know that some humans can be trained to do that just fine. Humans are natural neuronal networks. That implies, neuronal networks can in principle do it. We just don’t have any human-capability artificial neuronal networks yet.
LLMs might never get there. But humans aren’t LLMs. If we ever manage to properly model a human brain, that probably will be able to do that task with human-level accuracy (which actually is pretty good if you only look at professionals of the filed).
Hopefully, it doesn’t actually need a human brain for the task - because modeling that might still be a century off.

Sales and marketing don’t count. Critical thinking doesn’t sell. So you won’t find critical thinkers in those departments.
From a security standpoint, those departments are to be considered hostile. But you can lock down the PCs there as much as possible to reduce the offline time because computer-illiterate employees don’t care about being able to install stuff or change settings.

Not sure what the goal is here. The dad had no intent to kill, so it literally can’t be murder. The disincentive aspect is irrelevant because deterrence only works against planned crimes.
This looks like the usual “we had to do something”. Nothing changes.

They have a domestic market to serve first. And they are fast at scaling up - but not that fast.
Give them half a decade.

I wouldn’t enter a cartel-protected market either if I had to finance that myself. If I had a captive bloc-sized market at home though…
China is big. There are a lot of customers there. And the government tends to plan long-term and is heavily subsidizing chip making tech for geopolitical reasons. Entering the western market is high-risk. Entering the Chinese market as a Chinese company and then also selling outside China after scaling up is low-risk.

For western-oriented companies, it’s a trap. All RAM makers outside China are in a single cartel. When anyone tries to undercut prices, they all lower their prices too and starve out the new competitor. Then, prices go up again.
This is why only China can solve the RAM crisis. They need their own full-scale domestic RAM production for geopolitical reasons and are therefore not disincentivized by the cartel existing.

It matches their overall nostalgia farming corporate strategy. Looks very retro. Maybe it can get some to buy yet another version of Skyrim.

They want to spend more money on their own launcher instead of just profiting from the existing FOSS one?
Couldn’t they just buy some irrevocable licenses of ancient games to actually enable eternal preservation instead?

Bragging about how product is at doing something is the easiest way to advertise product. No conspiracy theories needed.

They want you to use their LLM to screen your code for bugs. When you do that, you see how surprisingly well it works now and that leads to you wanting to also use it for generating code. That is when you realize that the 20 bucks starter subscription isn’t enough to actually use it professionally… which means, you upgrade and they get moar money.

Microsoft being slow to fix bugs isn’t news.

So what? As long as they do proper QA, using AI is fine.

I use Claude Code with the Fable model too. It is pretty good. It still does hallucinate once in a while. And it still does logical fallacies sometimes. But I mitigate that by using the natural neuronal network in my head to analyzing the generated code (and yes, I am the bottleneck).
