How, he’s dead?
Which will be announced in 4 days, not a minute earlier.
I mean was he ever?
who votes for this cadever
This is the GOPs final farewell to Mitch. He loved rat fucking more than anything. Pretending he’s not dead or at least braindead to avoid a Democrat governor from having their legal say is exactly what he’d want.
A legacy of stealing the football and going home.
The GOP don’t want him out either. Forget the special election, McConnell is on the appropriations committee and without him they don’t have the majority they need to pass certain things. GOP wants him back just as much if not more.
It is entirely fitting that McConnell is fillibustering his own obituary.
He’s not dead, but whatever happened he is 100% incapable of holding office.
I mean this has been true for several decades, but it has never been more true.
He’s been mostly incapable of holding office up until now. How many times have we watched him have a seizure in front of live TV and then his handlers just have to coax him gently offstage.
Recently it looks like they’re toting around a wax figure on a wheelchair.
Should have done this weeks ago, you idiot. Now the Pedo Party only needs to wait a few days before they get exactly what they want…
My guess is that he intends to call for a special election* on Aug 2, once he doesn’t get a response.
(* even though I claim that under the KY constitution, he doesn’t have to and could just unilaterally appoint a replacement instead)
This guess isn’t based on evidence or actions or his own words, unfortunately. Aug 2 will come and pass with zero action other than ‘concern.’
That would be the stupidest thing he could possibly do. He has absolutely nothing to lose by going for it as hard as he can.
“That would be the stupidest thing he could possibly do”
That’s how you know what exactly will happen. It’s been this way since 2015.
Why does a few days make a difference?
And just what is “exactly what they want”? No one seems to know. How would calling or not calling a special election affect the Republican’s agenda? There’s no way a Democrat would be elected. So how is it to Repub’s advantage to hide his condition until Aug 3?
If thats true, it saves them money for November?
Edit: never mind see below. It changes who can run, and apparently someone who wants to cant without a special election.
…Or what?
Toothless request.
“Tell us you’re going to do your job or you have to pwetty pweeeease pinky swear that you’re gonna voluntarily quit! 👉👈🥺”
Start firing or arresting people. If the GOP can do it without repercussions, so can you.
The Republicans don’t do shit. It’s the MAGA regular voter who gets stuff done. The Republican is as useless as any democrat.
Well, given that Kentucky voted in Beshear, it’s not out of the question that leaving a bad enough taste in voters’ mouths could result in a Democrat winning McConnell’s seat. Or maybe that’s just hopium.
Kentucky was the first state that was called for Trump in 2016, so keep hoping
“Or maybe that’s just hopium.”
Pure unadulturated hopium.
Honestly, I wish they wouldn’t. This motherfucker is not just holding his general Senate seat vacant, he’s also holding a couple of very powerful committee seats he has vacant, robbing the Republicans not just of his floor vote but of his committee votes. He’s chair of Rules and a member of Appropriations, as well as holding a number of lesser assignments that are still important as the orange chancre is actively destroying whatever still allows us to have a functioning government.
Legislation has to go through committee before it ever hits the Senate floor for debate, meaning that McConnell is and has been absolutely crucial to moving forward legislation enabling Trump and stopping any checks on it before it even gets to a vote. Appropriations is possibly the most powerful committee in the Senate anyway, but pay very special attention to the kind of legislation that has to pass Rules first, for example:
- Corrupt practices (this refers to US election law);
- Credentials and qualifications of Members of the Senate, contested elections, and acceptance of incompatible offices;
- Federal elections generally, including the election of the President, Vice President, and Members of the Congress;
- Nominations to fill a vacancy in the Vice Presidency;
- Presidential succession;
- United States Capitol and congressional office buildings, …the Smithsonian Institution (which is under direct fire right now as the Republicans are desperately trying to rewrite American history and erase the record of slavery wherever they can)
Again, McConnell is chair of Rules. You really want that motherfucker’s committee assignments filled? Not to mention that it is the Senate that confirms presidential appointments, such as Attorney General and Director of National Intelligence, both of which are filled right now with incompetent (and worse) men actively seeking confirmation.
So for as many people want McConnell to prove he’s alive, and for as much as I’d like to see his handlers sweat as they continue to enable his fraud of pretending he will ever return to his position, I say let the motherfucker rot. I know Gov Beshear is trying to do right by Kentuckians who deserve to be represented in the Senate, but for myself I’m not entirely sure McConnell ever represented anyone beyond himself.
Let his chairs remain vacant.
Is there a way for the Senate to reassign those committee seats to someone else? Do chairs have deputies or similar?
Yes, for every chair there is a Ranking Member of the minority party, and committee assignments are readily shuffled. This is true of both the House and the Senate.
Usually it’s not a big deal. But nothing can be done by anyone until and unless there is a formal vacancy. That would be created by either McConnell himself announcing he will not be back, or he is somehow proven dead or incapacitated. That seems to be what his party is trying very hard to hold off.
Interesting perspective that I hadn’t considered. Excellent points.
Thanks. I almost wonder if Beshear is thinking along the same lines because anything he does to address the practical absence is going to be litigated far beyond the election itself, so maybe (I don’t know, this is just a guess) he’s doing just enough to be able to prosecute the fraud when the dust settles. It’s as viable a course as any other.
I’ve yet to see an explanation for why this guy can’t call a special election? Now he says he’s sending someone to investigate, he hadn’t done that before? It just seems, to me, like he’s stalling just as much as the opposition.
He’s being a traditional Polite Democrat, which is why MAGA is in power in the first place.
We need Warriors. It’s nice that he’s a Dem that can get elected in KY, but he’s still a weakling. This is an awesome opportunity, and he’s squandering it.
We need Warriors.
There’s no mechanism for a state official to remove a Senator from office, other than the coroner signing a death certificate. You can’t hold a special election to fill an office that isn’t officially vacant. Unfortunately, there’s no recall elections for federal office holders.
Just do it anyway, test the law, and make them fight about it in court. The government has nearly endless resources for court cases, so use it. That’s what MAGA does, and it works. Even if you lose, the citizens appreciate that you tried. Better than surrendering in advance.
Whatever comes out in court will embarrass MAGA more than the Dems, who are “just trying to uncover the truth behind MAGA lies.”
Dems have to learn how to play this game.
Naw. Just proclaim he’s dead and start the process. Mitch with either show up quick, or else he doesn’t and that’s proof someone else can get to work.
And if you hold the election and Mitch appears alive and well later, then Mitch takes his seat back. Not hard to figure out
Democrats will somehow squander this opportunity
They already are. Beshear should call their bluff, and appoint a Democrat to the seat.
Then MAGA will be forced to sue to stop it, and they’ll have to provide Proof of Life.
Or they won’t sue, and just whine like a spoiled toddler until the Dems just give them whatever they want to shut them up.
He’s passed on! This senator is no more! He has ceased to be! He’s expired and gone to meet his maker! He’s a stiff! Bereft of life, he rests in peace! If they hadn’t nailed him to the hospital bed he’d be pushing up the daisies! His metabolic processes are now history! He’s off the twig! He’s kicked the bucket, he’s shuffled off his mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible!! HE IS AN EX-SENATOR!!
Well. We’d better replace him then
Pretty sure they will announce Mitch is either dead or brain dead on or about Aug 3. Wonder why that date is special?
Political experts say timing requirements mean the window to call a special election would be tight, with an estimated cutoff of Aug. 3 based on candidate filing and notice deadlines.
Kentucky does not allow a candidate who lost in the primary to run as an independent. And if there is a Special Election, Massey could throw his hat in the ring. The special election would be a loophole that would allow that. I’m no expert but this all seems real fucking fishy to me.
I prefer mcconnell be shot out of a canon into the sun, but either works.
McConnell’s Ghost: “No. Wtf are you gonna do about it, dumbass? That’s right, nothing.”
This is a pathetic attempt by the GOP to maintain an air of appropriate governance. He wrote a strongly worded letter with exactly 0 mention of a deadline.
This is a nothing burger, McConnell doesn’t have to do shit. He only needs to ride this out until August 3rd, by the way.
The longer this goes on, the more it hurts Rs more than Ds. Of course, this is just the gerentocracy that the people of Kentucky voted for with old Moscow Mitch.
August 3rd…🪦
