I never trust taxi drivers who use an electronic map. Taxi drivers should know all of the streets by heart, and be able to accurately predict road congestion, like they did in the good old days. By using this evil navigation technology, their spatial awareness withers and it is just a shame.

1·24 hours agoChina is already making really good chips, even in old and “outdated” fabs. Because they came up with techniques for how to squeeze more resolution out of those machines than what was thought possible. So if their DUV technology actually works, then I’m sure their fabs will make good chips.

31·24 hours agoAccurate. The West was in the Denial stage of Grief back then, believing that China could only copy, not innovate. We’re already at Bargaining now.

Correct, but it’s also the time you lose when commuting, which also forces you to sit still. If you work 8 hours/day and have a 1 hour commute, then you’re effectively locked up for 10 hours per day.
So currently I’m choosing between two jobs, one is a 15 min walk, the other with a 1 hour drive. It’s going to be the 15 min walk, easy, and the 1 hour drive would need a significantly higher paycheck for me to consider it seriously.
I didn’t say I’m special. But you, clearly are. Bye.
Oh, you can drop your toddler off at daycare at 5 AM? Are your tweens fine readying themselves for school without any adults at home?
A car-centric society is the problem. The need to commute by car, both for the kids and the adults, is the problem.
As a non-American, I agree. Trump didn’t have institutional support either, he was a meme candidate. Turns out having an actual base is more important than being the least offensive to the most amount of people.
What’s more, the perception of being the anti-establishment vote was a tailwind for Trump. The non-voting block is a third of all eligible voters, those people don’t get out to vote because the unions tell them to, they’re only going to vote if they feel like there’s an actual chance of representation.
Progressives should stop apologizing to centrists and moderates. Listening to an placating these people is what got us here in the first place. And if, in the choice between AOC and Trump they choose Trump, then they weren’t really moderates to begin with.
One word answer: families.
Metabolic health has a tremendous impact on how we process calories, and I don’t really find it useful to discuss this further. There’s a tremendous body of evidence to support this, that you can do whatever you want with.
Nephew got bit by a tick while on an island in Stockholm’s archipelago. Developed a ring around the bite. Rather than have them wait for 3 hours to take the boat, or even get a taxi boat, a helicopter had him at the hospital and under care within an hour. For that and two nights in the hospital, they got charged nothing.
When he was released, he was on his way back to the helipad to get a ride back to the island and we had to explain to him that we were gonna need to get the bus/boat.
It absolutely is not all calorie in calorie out. Or rather, how calories are stored and burned depend on your metabolic health. There’s a massive amount of literature on this.
Here’s a starting point: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(25)00201-3/fulltext
I absolutely did not eat at my desk. In fact I had way more sweets in the first role, the culture was different at the lab. I know about thermodynamics, but I don’t think it’s that simple. Moving around helps a ton with stress and digestion which affects your metabolism and insulin resistance. It’s not about moving to “burn off” fat, it’s about moving to not synthesize the fat around your organs in the first place.
It will continue to decline steadily. I don’t think it will all just be wiped out over night.
China is proving that you don’t need so many massive and ultramodern datacenters to either train or serve good models. We’re getting diminishing returns on compute, so these massive infrastructure investments into AI are premature at best.
Yeah, it’s more interesting that countries like Iran and Vietnam have very cheap or free basic medical services. Sure you might not get all of the resources that they can provide you in Sweden, but the principle is the same.
Nah, I got the meaning of your post. Standing at the desk, even with a treadmill, is not the same as natural movement. Taking breaks from a physically passive activity is not tge same as being constantly physically active.
I had a feeling this is a USA thing, and lo and behold - congress says pizza and french fries count as vegetables.
This happened to me with a fucking bombshell girl. She started flirting back so aggressively that I got scared. Turns out she is batshit crazy and I dodged a bullet.
Now I only flirt with ugly girls to keep the universe balanced. Ugly girls rule.
It’s not even close. When I went from 50:50 lab/office to 10:90 lab/office I gained like 12 kg and outgrew all of my pants in a year. Granted a bit of that was stress with my asshole bosses but I believe that just working on my feet a couple of hours versus being sedentary made a massive difference.

Wow, okay. I mean I was being sarcastic with my comment, but now I kinda regret it. Way to cheapen another profession’s talents and trade.
