Keep Android Open
In August 2025, Google announced that starting next year, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first registering centrally with Google.
This registration will involve:
- Paying a fee to Google
- Agreeing to Google’s Terms and Conditions
- Providing government identification
- Uploading evidence of an app’s private signing key
- Listing all current and future application identifiers
Sign the open letter. And get active to help oppose the enactment of the policy in other ways listed on the website. Are there any more ways to oppose this?

at this point i am saddened that folks are complaining to the feds in the U.S. to do anything positive. at every turn i am overwhelmed by the mere idea that we could or should keep these systems alive. android included. if the internet is to remain free, free it yourself. free yourself. the tech exists. abandon the convenience.

So my motivation to achieve more digital privacy has evolved. Used to be to avoid getting hit by identity fraud, or sued for torrenting. It more or less stayed that way until the last year. Now I realize the necessity of exiting and finding alternatives sooner than later before they make everything outside their control inaccessible.
I’m currently going back to basic electronics. Going to buy a Maker2 phone and learn everything I can about LORA and mesh networks and how to build communication devices without a pay-meter.
