This thread has a lot of people saying things like “don’t get a degree” or “get a trade cert” or “work in a different field to get experience” which I feel completely side-steps many issues and the realities that many people face. It’s just a fundamentally broken system. The value of degrees fluctuates so much because of a political climate that has the stability of a pane of glass being violently thrown off of a building and a job market that prioritizes either posting ghost jobs to overwork employees to death or outsourcing its candidate search to whoever can guess the most buzzwords in an application.

When there wasn’t a word count, but instead a page count, I increased the size of periods to make wider spaces between lines, just by a point or two. These types of stupid requirements are why in undergrad, multiple TAs and professors noted that I have a very verbose way of writing.

I was wondering about that. I assumed there wasn’t exceptions, because those can still be possessive. Oakland A’s members or 13’s unlucky superstition. I’m not surprised though, because English is a stupid mess of a language.

I knew there had to be an issue with the study. I have very little faith in America, but unless they polled 1-year-olds, there’s no way so many people wouldn’t understand what’s it’s at least about, even if not what specifically. Especially after so much 250th birthday advertising.

The issue with this is that one of my other cats doesn’t understand the concept of running water. He tries swatting it and biting it.

There must be more specifics about that too. I know games I backed on patreon needed to make the price for a key higher since steam wouldn’t allow it to be gifted at a lower cost. But Humble Bundle does that, so I’m not sure where the line is.

Only one of my cats is a chatterbox, but I have no idea what any of his meows mean. He looks somewhere, screams, looks somewhere else, screams again, looks at me, screams. He doesn’t even differentiate at all, because he uses all of his different meows for the same things. I think he just likes to talk, because he’s been like that since he was a kitten.

My cat was born from a stray, and I took it upon myself to raise her. She acts like she doesn’t remember what it was like to be outside for two years of her life, as she has completely adapted to her regal lifestyle with no interest in going back outside ever. She is convinced that water straight from the tap is better than water straight from the tap into her bowl. She also will drink from the puddles on the floor after a shower, because that is somehow also better than water in her bowl. She also scratches at doors she wants open. She also was mad at me for an entire day for the two or three drops of flea medication.

Based on what I see in this thread, I find more of an issue to be media. Mainstream media can walk the line of truth and falsehood and make people think a certain way. Anyone who sees that can be redirected to an online source, which can be anybody from Jane/John Infantbrain to legitimate scientists. Being an influencer doesn’t preclude being a specialist, academic, etc., but the average person isn’t going to determine or care for the difference.

If it were feasible, sure. But when there’s no social safety net, everyone would need a Plan B just in case. And I mean everyone, since I’m under the impression they would rather close a single location than pay reasonably.

Because in the US, that’s already the expectation? A reasonable person should plan the tip ahead of time if they were raised in the US. But also, an employee doesn’t have that power. An employee at a Chili’s, Applebee’s, Texas Roadhouse can’t phone the CEO for a salary change, because it’s usually out of a manager’s control. And even if an employee could do that, the CEO would just say, “get fucked?” and fire them to hire someone else for minimal pay. For a local restaurant, sure, but not a big chain in which the employee can’t effectively speak to the employer. When it comes to thise circumstances, employees are below the customers who are below the employer in terms of how much power they hold. Plus, there are issues that aren’t even that employee’s fault: if food is cooked incorrectly that a server ordered correctly, then refusing to tip has absolutely no influence on the cook. And restaurants will still blame the server for that mistake, even when they did everything correctly.

As a past server, it’s incredibly easy to make that threshold. But it’s also based on an average per pay period. If a server has a giant party that tips $30, and nothing else in a 6 hour period, it’s still 2.13 for those 6 hours. And any corporate restaurant hates paying servers. Servers would be fired if they consistently needed pay (not often) or worked overtime (decently often, because then corporations would need to pay $9something an hour)

Correct. Not every server is a bartender in a local place that gets a tip-out on top of their tips from reasonable people. Some are servers in a chain restaurants that serve the least grateful, understanding, and intelligent people around. I mean, I had a lady complain that her medium steak had pink in it. It’s not the server’s fault if the customer is a moron.

People are. But when working, not tipping exclusively hurts the worker in 99% of circumstances. Restaurants could not care less as long as they don’t need to shell out $5.12 for workers.

Absolutely. I think it depends on a few things though. Since federal minimum is still 7.25, any tipped employee in those states with no higher minimum would absolutely hate a salary unless there was still tipping culture. But also, as someone who worked in decent and shitty restaurants alike, the clientelle is a big decider. In a shitty place, I’d rather have a salary, because the people are so selfish and entitled that they refuse to tip if we didn’t serve something that was never on the menu, or think $2 is suitable for a $20-$50 meal. In a better place, where tips are more consistent and proportional, tips are a better choice.

It’s how states get representatives like NC and Tricia Cotham, who ran as a progressive then just switched her entire platform once elected.

I want to use this meme to draw attention to the fact that many fruits have a lot of varieties. Usually, people know this because of wines and grapes, since concord, pinot noir/grigio, chardonnay, nebbiolo are all different kinds of grapes and are vastly different. The same is true with apples too, but most people are familiar with the few they can pick at orchards. If there was an apple that could do what’s described in the meme, I wouldn’t be particularly surprised.
