linuxmemes@lemmy.world•This guy’s a real Upstart if you ask me
1·3 hours agoIt scrolls like crap on my desktop Firefox, too. WTF is this person doing with their website code?

3·4 hours agobut once you get a good franken debian going, when that thing breaks there’s no rescue.
I found that since Flatpak and Docker became a thing, there’s really not much reason to do frankendebian nowadays. My desktop runs Debian oldstable and it’s just fine.

2·4 hours agoTBF “doesn’t crash” is generally why LTS-distros do “unchanging”.

2·4 hours agoDebian decays? Can’t relate, I’ve often been running Debian releases until they almost fell out of support (happens on servers) and they were always rock solid after I set them up. It’s only ever an issue if you want to run new software versions without some kind of virtual environment, and generally I just don’t care about that.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•Dual booting was just wasting precious disk space anyway
1·4 hours agoThat’s what I’m saying, I’m dualbooting Ubuntu and Debian! I’ve been Windows-free for years.

5·1 day agoI’m dualbooting Linux. Mostly because I’m in the process of switching distros and I’ve been dragging my feet for a long time.

3·1 day agoJust so ppl aren’t dissapointed Daws like ableton and fl studio don’t have support (Reaper and Bitwig do tho, some others too)
And while Bitwig runs great, there’s a much smaller selection of Linux-compatible third-party plugins. I didn’t have any luck with compatibility layers, so I switched my complete plugin stack when I switched to Linux. I’m relatively ascetic when it comes to plugins so its fine, but lots of people won’t be willing to work like that.

2·2 days agoThere’s powertop, but last time I’ve seriously tried using it was years ago. My laptop is >10 years old anyway (I’ve owned it for about half of that) and I almost always use it at home on AC power, the battery is probably geriatric anyway …

1·2 days agoSleep doesn’t cut the power though, which is especially problematic on a laptop, and AFAIK if you use full disk encryption your drive remains readable (also especially problematic on a laptop).
Hibernate works, though it’s kinda slow, too.

1·2 days agoBig fan of hibernate (
systemctl hibernateon systemd systems, and you need a swap file that’s at least as big as your RAM). Sure I wait some time until it’s shut down and booting takes longer, too, but not having to reopen all those terminal and editor windows I’m accumulating while working is worth it.

1·2 days agoIf you’re on a laptop, you often can’t do that and those updates waste precious battery life.

Linux Furs@pawb.social•How the heck do you type Traditional Chinese with pinyin, without using rime?
1·2 days agoWhat, not even significant whitespace in general, but specifically tabs vs. spaces? I can see why one would prefer tabs, but code editors generally handle this automatically and it’s definitely a good idea to pick one or the other in your language spec if you’re doing significant whitespace.
Somehow, I perfectly remember ncmpcpp (what does any of that even mean? something with C++ I guess?) but struggle with lighttpd (light+httd+daemon).

Die Tatsache, dass das ein ehemaliger Pfaffer (weil Ruhestand) ist, macht das ganze ziemlich irrelevant mMn.
