Chili Cook-Off at the Allways

I missed the one-woman show, “A Different Woman: a True Story of a Texas Childhood” when it was running here in town. If it is up again, I absolutely won’t miss it. I hear it is great. Its creators sent me this invitation to what sounds like a super-fun event for a worthy cause. They are having a Texas-to-Canada themed party to raise money for a Canadian tour of the show. Just remember to take your Beano.

Come to the All-Ways Lounge the Saturday after Thanksgiving to sample and judge the rockin’est chili in the city! Only $5 gets you all you can eat until the chili runs out… Also screening (at 9pm) Charlie Chaplin’s classic silent film “The Gold Rush” with live musical accompaniment, plus trivia games and prizes!

15 spicy, savory, and super-secret chili concoctions will compete to win the favor of your tastebuds… try them all, and help crown the first quadrennial chili champion of New Orleans!!!

Po Boy Preservation Festival

Ah, it seems like just yesterday that it was time for the annual New Orleans Po Boy Preservation Festival. This thing has blown up, so I recommend getting there early if you wanna get fed. Here’s a link to all of the vendors serving up their signature po boys, and other treats. There are some seriously A-List New Orleans musicians lined up to play. There are also a whole bunch of events including; po boy judging, french bread fighting, thoughtful panel discussions and kids activities.@ Oak St. and S. Carrollton. 11am-7pm.

Mirliton Festival

One of my favorite events of the year is getting under way right now: the Mirliton Festival. This the 21st year of the Bywater Neighborhood Association’s party. The vegetable at its center is the mirliton, also known as chayote. It is a pear shaped member of the gourd family. I have always thought it resembled an old man. In fact, last year at the festival, I made and sold a Mirliton Chow Chow that featured a little anthropomorphized mirliton.

Beyond food, there are all sorts of arts and crafts for sale, kids activities, and of course, music. Here’s the line-up:

6:00 – Kermit Ruffins & the BBQ Swingers
5:00 – Happy Talk Band
4:00 – R. Scully Rough 7
3:00 – Hurray for the Riff Raff
2:00 – Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue
1:00 – The 101 Runners
Noon – New Orleans Jazz Vipers
11:00 – The Mirlitones

Admission is $5, for Bywater Neighborhood Association Members it is $3, and children under 5 are free. Markey Park.

VooDoo

Today is the one day I can go to VooDoo this year, as I will be working my tookus off for the next few days. I also get to be the +1 of my husband who happens to be playing in the Bingo! tent this afternoon, and it is important for us rock n’ roll wives to take advantage of the perks every now and then.

Just as I was thinking that I will probably be spending a lot of time at the Bingo! tent today, as the big touring acts lined up for today aren’t quite doing it for me, I remembered that this is now the VooDoo music and art experience. So, I’ve been doing a little research as to the what and where when it comes to the art installations around City Park. There are 13 pieces by local and international artists, and you can create your own custom schedule on the VooDoo site.

Also, there is food. Food, glorious food. I’ve got my eye on some chargrilled oysters. Maybe a crepe. Also, the pressed sandwiches are looking good. There will definitely be a Natchitoches meat pie…

Crescent City Farmer’s Market

There are a still a couple of hours left of the Crescent City Farmer’s Market, Tuesday uptown edition. The Green Plate specials this month are by Chef Cynthia of Cafe Minh. She does Vietnamese, French, Creole fusion cuisine–uh, sign me up. Here’s what’s in store today:

Oktoberfest

The Deutsches Haus has been its current location since 1928. Its roots go back to the mid-nineteenth century, however, as a social aid organization for German immigrants to the area. It later evolved into more of a cultural preservation organization. This is the last year the Deutsches Haus will be in its current spot, as it has to make way for the big LSU/VA hospital project. They promise to be back next year, somewhere else in the city. So, this means this is the last Oktoberfest at the historic Deutsches Haus. It has been going on all month, but this is the last weekend. Today (Friday) from 4pm-midnight, and tomorrow (Saturday) from 1pm-midnight. Mmmm. Cabbage rolls, German potato salad, sausages, beer, schnapps!

Satsuma

I would like to take this opportunity to wax poetic about my neighborhood cafe, Satsuma. Oh, Satsuma. How shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Though art more lovely and more temperate. Although, that’s not saying much, since New Orleans summers are awful. Lemme start over.

You are open 7 days a week, from 7am-7pm. So simple, so reliable. Why is having consistent hours such an issue for so many New Orleans businesses?

You have a charming, homey and chic environment. Totally Bywater, but functional:

When I do terrible things to my body at night, I can wake up the next morning and walk over, and have you undo the damage with delicious and nutritious foods like this:

Your staff is friendly, and efficient and don cool haircuts.

Seriously. I have watched you evolve into your current incarnation, Satsuma. You have hit your stride. Please don’t change.

Art for Art’s Sake & a Little Octoberfest

So pretty much everyone knows that tonight is Art for Art’s Sake, the annual gallery opening and CAC fundraiser. It’s from 6-9. Ground Zero is Julia Street, but the action extends all the way Uptown and into the CBD.

Before heading up that-a-way though, check out a little Octoberfest event happening over here in the Bywater. From 2pm-8pm, the “Little Saxony” Octoberfest is happening at 612 Piety St. Beer-boiled bratwurst form Sheboygan, Wisconsin! Beer! Stuffed cabbage! And The New Orleans Klezmer Allstars play at 4pm. Entrance is free, and everything is around $5.

World’s Largest Mac & Cheese

Yesterday it was the world’s largest king cake. Today, it is the world’s largest mac and cheese! It’s funny, in a cruel sort of way, what the universe sends one’s way when one is trying to reduce her body weight by 14%! That’s right folks, I will have to live vicariously through your tales of cake and mac and cheese.

So, Vermont’s Cabot Creamery Cooperative has teamed up with Chef John Folse who is cooking this record breaking-ly large mac and cheese in a huge cast iron kettle that dates back to 1797. Umm, rad! The final dish will weigh 2100 pounds.–speaking of reducing one’s body weight by 14%. The dish is then being served in all-you-can-eat bowls for $5. And it all benefits the Magnolia School and New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity.

Oh, here’s the recipe for you to recreate at home:

Ingredients:

  • 575 pounds cooked macaroni
  • 286 pounds mixed Cabot cheese
  • 56 pounds butter
  • 26 pounds flour
  • 1,100 pounds of milk
  • 61 pounds dry seasoning blend

Worlds Largest King Cake

Haydel’s Bakery has made the world’s largest king cake! Apparently this thing is so large, it wraps around the Superdome twice! Today you can eat a piece of that history. They are going to start slicing it up at noon (continuing until 3pm) at the Superdome. The New Orleans Saints will be there, and it’s all for a good cause. There will also be music and prizes!
