Some users do not understand that the first message is the username login step, so it would be nice if, when no cookie username is stored, the application presents more explicit information about the login step. The only hint for the user currently is the input area placeholder "Type your username...". In that case, one option could be to generate a bigger notification, centered, saying "Login: set your username". It would be nice if the notification were only closed after the user enters their username.
