  • There’s like 20 things he could do all the way from a public appearance down to simply releasing medical records. He’s doing none of them.

When evaluating such things, I look at motivation. I put myself in the other person’s shoes, and ask what set of circumstances or motivations would cause me to act as I am?

Take for example the lot of people who make outlandish claims about hover propulsion, free energy from drinking water, etc.
I put myself in those shoes, and I say ‘okay, I just built a device that turns water into power. What do I do?’
Most likely I patent the thing, build 50 of them, and send them off to research labs for evaluation. When everyone concludes my thing works, I start licensing the patents for $billions and I retire.

On the other hand, let’s say I invent a water-to-power machine but it doesn’t work. What do I do? I act sketchy, try to appeal to people without much sense, try to get their money.

Which one more matches the behavior of the person advertising the free energy machine? The second one? Then I guess it’s probably bullshit.

Same deal here. If I was McConnell or his staff and I was alive and was going to return to the Senate, I’d post a video, I’d release medical records, I’d do something to reassure my constituents that I will continue to represent them.
On the other hand if I was a political director for a dead or brain-dead or almost-dead Senator, and I didn’t want the opposing Governor to appoint a successor, I’d do whatever it took to delay the world realizing that the Senator won’t be returning ever. Delay, Deny, Defend. Then once the deadline passes, we announce the Senator has ‘made an unfortunate turn for the worse’ and no longer is able to return. And our defense against fraud is someone we pay off to swear that when our brain-dead comatose Senator was asked if he’d return, his eyelids twitched twice for yes.

So what action are you suggesting? We do demonstrations and protests and letters and all that but Trump has made it very clear he does not give one single shit what other people think.

We have a Congressional election coming up later this year and it is currently expected that those who oppose Trump will win significant numbers.

Or are you suggesting forget about peaceful action within the bounds of the Constitution and go straight to armed rebellion?

Personally I would rather have the country reject Trump in elections and walk away from this whole thing with a bad taste in its mouth that would make it harder for someone like him to gain power in the future, than to have some kind of violent illegal uprising that would only strengthen Trump’s supporters.

  • If you were going to do this, I think the only way to make it work would be some sort of blockchain based crypto system.

You create your fediverse account and then also some sort of blockchain transaction that consumes some nominal amount of cryptocurrency. Then each of your posts gets a signature which authenticates it against that original transaction.

That said, this is a horrible idea and we shouldn’t do it. It would absolutely solve a lot of spam problems, at the cost of making fediverse participation out of reach for an awful lot of the world’s population. Unless we make it cheap enough for them, in which case it is also cheap enough that those in developed countries can create dozens or hundreds of accounts without concern for cost.

From what I have seen of Trump, it is pretty clear he does not care what anyone else thinks and his vindictive as hell. So rather than writing him I think I could use my time more productively by repeatedly slamming my face in the refrigerator door. At least that way I’m less likely to end up on some sort of list.

What I do instead is vote for candidates in Congress that oppose Trump and his ideology. And spend time in online discussions like this one making it clear the American people are not in lockstep behind him.

My comfort is irrelevant. I’m just another idiot on the internet.

But genuine question, you say I am a fascist enabling coward who cares little about democracy.

So what would you have me do? Like, you have a single American who has never voted for or supported Trump, for such a person what does ‘caring about democracy’ look like? What might that single American say or do that would make you say ‘that person right there is no coward, that is a stand-up human being who values democracy’?

I’m asking because you say I do it wrong, I am curious what doing it right looks like?

Your opinion of me is quite irrelevant.

The only thing I want people to take away from this whole thread is that there are a lot of Americans who strongly oppose Trump, who love and support Canada, and who find the current messages coming out of Washington abhorrent. It certainly doesn’t make anything better. My only hope is when you watch the news and you see the crap coming out of Washington, you keep in mind that crap is coming out of Washington and not most of the rest of the country. You have friends here.
I realize that means scant little when your country is on fire and your neighbor’s government is telling you to fuck off and threatening to tax or conquer you.
