Standardized testing is great for math and reading and very basic science.

The criticism is that it makes teachers “teach to the test”. And that’s very true. But if the kids aren’t fucking getting it, that’s a problem regardless of whether we have the tests or not. Getting rid of the tests just hides the problem.

Yeah, eventually. If I’m going to live in a country indefinitely, I’m going to try to learn their language. If I’m in France for more than a year, I’m going to try to learn French. I’d expect the same of friends and family. It’s not racist to expect people living in a place long term to be able to converse with the locals.

“Safe” is relative. Any radiation exposure has a small chance to cause cancer. We consider a few x-rays not harmful, but just because the chance is generally worth taking for the results.
