Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Amazon is gutting its AI division after sustained failure
2·3 days agoAmazon already won their version of that contest. I can’t imagine how the people running it think, but maybe they wouldn’t want to play that game again when they can just wait and buy up all the losers at a small fraction of the current value.
Similarly, people would say “B.F., Africa”.

Technology@lemmy.world•Generative AI Is an Engineering Disaster. A shockingly inefficient trillion-dollar project.English
2·17 days agoI think that if you think you are better than other people you are then obligated to provide care and support for those you view as lessers. Then the very greatest that a person could be, and achieve, would be to care for and nurture the most people.

Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•A lot of Anti-AI people seem very illogical in their concerns and how they address it and I am tired of people pretending that is normalEnglish
6·1 month agoFor me, the part of my views on the ‘AI boom’ that makes me seem irrational is the ethically dubious development of certain strains, coupled with that I absolutely lack the mental capacity to sort through all the noise and determine what parts are ok and what parts or not. Due to the marketing push, everything AI has melded into one giant glob of stuff that I am required, by the weakness of my flesh, to take or leave as whole.
A more nuanced approach is better if the resources are available to pursue it. I do not think it is fair to expect such an approach from any given individual.

4·1 month agoI think having people present is a crutch for bad managers too. Instead of checking in, setting goals, and reviewing goals reached they can just roll around the compound and see if everyone is fiddling with their doodads and looking stressed out.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Alberta government commissions $1.5M economic analysis and panel on cost of separation
7·2 months agoI predict she will add the ‘vote for referendum to stay in canada’ to the ‘vote for referendum to leave canada’ number and say ‘we must have a referendum, I guess. Aw shucks’, just as she did to excuse this stupid referendum. And as long as albertans are arguing over this b.s., we aren’t focused on some other rotten thing the administration is doing. Notwithstanding clause, etc. etc.

News@lemmy.world•Man pleads guilty to assassinating top Minnesota Democrat and her husband
1·2 months agoHave the death penalty, but only if the lead prosecutor goes down with them and can only ever be involved in one at a time (ie they can do another if the one is appealed and stopped). Prosecutor doesn’t have to be in jail while they wait, but their lives end simultaneously and under identical conditions.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what will happen to all the datacenters when the bubble bursts?
71·2 months agoHowever it pans out, the big money’s endgame is consolidation of wealth, making everyone below them noticeably poorer, and everyone else involved believes they can ride the wave.
Data centers that became worth running before the pop will have a change of ownership continue to run. Anything else will be gutted and parted out or dumped in a bin depending on the quality and skill of the vulture. It will be done with the least amount of empathy imaginable.
That’s my favourite statement of the day. I’m lucky I’d put my drink down or there’d be a mess everywhere.

Technology@lemmy.world•Women in Brussels 'filmed without their knowledge' by men wearing Meta smart glassesEnglish
21·2 months agoPerhaps your future camera could automatically fog any individual that you haven’t received prior consent from.
And yes, I realise this idea has a number of technological requirements that may not exist yet, or cannot reliably exist ever, and requires the trusting of some authority in a world where noone of that esteem seem to be able to exist.
I would define one type of ‘dumb’ as people who upon learning they are making errors, refuse to apply any effort in improving. I have met lots. I am it sometimes too.
Another type of ‘dumb’ is ones that care nothing for others and cannot even foresee that caring broadly for and uplifting others is actually caring for yourself. I will also fail at this one often.
I read a book that convinced me that anything I thought I ‘should’ do was completely optional. I did the 'had to’s as I’d always done, and if a ‘should’ came up I did it if I felt like it and was able to not worry about it if I didn’t. It was a pretty nice week. Therapist laughed at it when I told them, and that was the end of that.
I’m still looking for whatever is making that smell.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I can only be assertive when I'm on edge, is this normal?
2·3 months agoI’d say practice being more assertive. Both in reality and find someone to pretend or role-play with that is somewhat like you. Take turns being the angry person you need to call, or random street person asking for directions and try out different tactics and discuss. Mirror situations you’ve experienced and invent new ones that might.

World News@lemmy.world•Alberta pushes for independence: Separatists hope to hold a referendum in October to secede from CanadaEnglish
4·3 months agoWhat I think will happen, is that the wording of the referendum question will be a barely readable word salad designed specifically to confuse. Votes will break into three groups: 1) coached to vote for seperatism 2) large random group with poor, or even moderately good, reading comprehension and 3) Can read good and want to stay. I believe that was done with the previous daylight savings referendum question.
