One of the next indicators of humanity's impending extinction will be a mass bird die-off, simply due to all the nonstop microplastics that'll clog up their lungs

I was thinking of mentioning them, actually, haha. I’m sure there are already picoplastics…

Imagine all the energy it costs to fuel money: all the bank vaults, all the armored cars, the security staff, all the numerous 24/7 backup systems… You don’t have an argument if you’re implying that fiat is better. The only leveler of the playing field would be bartering or no currency, like the native Americans did.

I know. I’m pro-BTC, though (but anti-all-other-coins, to clarify). My point is that one could say the same of USD or any other fiat.

The joke was about the old Indian commercial about, “something something once everything is dead, you will learn that money can’t be eaten” or some shit.

            Millenial humor I guess.

Oh, I’m well aware of that line. The thing is that I actually believe it yet think our socioeconomic predicament is a necessary evil… 😕

wasnt it obvious with the passenger pigeon going extinct. microplastics would be a slow death, unlike something overhunting, deforestation, etc.

Uhm that doesnt work like that

Microplastics are mostly in water, and a huge issue there. They become small enough to get into cells and cause constant inflammation and cancer. But they are not aerosols.

Maybe very small plastic particles could get into air, but that usually happens when something burns. The most nasty microplastics occur when burning things.

A “Showerthought” is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you’re doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

  • Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
  • When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
  • More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as “capitalism” and “communism”. If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy’s Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
