I had thought it was just a system wherein the code is switched from binary 1/0 to one where you can do +0/1 neutral 0/1 and -0/1 or something like that. If you have to be dealing with individual qubits then it sounds useless.

Basically they have all the utility of a supercomputer. Breaking encryption is a use sure. As is computational chemistry and protein folding and interactions. The reason it can do so is because of the information processing. It doesn’t mean new equations but that the equations that are made can be tested faster. There’s various times where equations to help understand bio/chemistry are limited to remain feasible to use but reduce the precision and accuracy.

Movies like the Big Short, Margin Call, shows like Billions, or whatever the inheritance show was, make people think they can be the ones smarter.

However, most individual investors aren’t usually of the arrogance that they’ll do better than the billionaires and hedge funds just of the arrogance they can still get more scraps than others and won’t get eaten themselves.

It’s a horror story and most people would probably go insane rather than manage to do anything with their knowledge. Besides getting rich because you know about what will get big ahead of time you are very different from all your peers. Any childhood crush much less a gf/bf is more perverse than thrilling and you have basically no chance of being able to meet and keep the same long-term partner much less having the same child if you’re a parent.

Unfortunately in much of the US, that is the law for found assets/property above relatively nominal amounts. At the least a reasonable attempt to find the owner is common law almost everywhere. Cops of course runs into potential issues with civil forfeiture and the like but I’m not sure of a way around that.

The IRS has a section for paying your taxes on illegal/criminal money lol. Claiming it on taxes isn’t the problem. There are other property laws that come into play. Generally, you have to turn it in to the police and let an appropriate waiting/notification period pass before it is considered unclaimed and then legally yours.

The only real exception to this are bearer bonds which the US effectively outlawed in the 1980s so it’d have to be older than that and the issuing entity still exist.

1. Because long-term strategy in the current US basically doesn’t exist. Voters want the results immediately and if they don’t see them they don’t vote the representative back in. The next representative wants to do their own thing and thus tears down what has been done to put their own stamp on it.

2. companies don’t want to do the starting line work that leads to a product. Failure rate is too high. Companies come in once government and academic scientists have developed things to a greater point. The guy who invented the blue led did a whole bunch of experiments in direct contradiction to his company execs following the results of an academic scientist.

Generics are not anything new, they can only get made once a patent has run out.
