If you spend any time consuming the BtB podcast, the running theme on young, privileged men who end up with astronomical amounts of money is stunted emotional growth and development.
Also. When you believe your vote/opinion weighs more than those without your billions of dollars, democracy isn’t ok. One vote? The same as Theresa working as a maid for the Marriott? Or Samantha, the mechanic that fixes my BMW? The fuck you say. We’re not equal and thus should not have the same number of votes. Hence the market for buying politicians.
I mean, i get it. My vote technically counts less than a drug addict in Ohio. Before Trump that wasn’t a concern of mine. Now? The fuck you say… they are the ones voting for these people!

Keeping the ‘lower orders’ squabbling amongst themselves is their best chance of maintaining their position, racism and other staples of the right tend to achieve this outcome.
Since many are pushing the narrative surreptitiously anyway, a few decide that they stand to benefit by positioning themselves as figureheads (and ultimately as prospective rulers/kingmakers) in addition to this.
Add into this the capacity for exploitation necessary for someone to become a billionaire; which often involves abstracting people down to numbers and the like in the first place; and…

What’s the deal? I had to read the Iliad and the Odyssey back in Hum 110, a required class. I liked the Odyssey more, but don’t understand the controversy.

Yeah you know the movie that was based in, very loosely, history, as opposed to a literal fiction book?
Everyone liked the hyper-realistic heavy Spartan Armor from 300. Amiright?
Oh, you know – the usual shower of Twitter chuds saw the racially diverse cast and took the film as a cultural assault on Western civilization.
They dismissed it as wokeslop before they had even seen it, and now that the movie is out and a critical success, they’re beside themselves.
Oh whatever. I’ll watch it because, Odyssey. And if the flow/acting work, I won’t care who is cast.
Dumb casting choices can be made. McLaughlin in Dune (way back), playing a teenager. Sean Young as anything other than a robot. David Duchovney trying to act out a past life in Xfiles. And so on. All of those are worth complaining about. These people focus on the wrong things.
I bet its Elliot Page having a minor role in the movie.
I didn’t even know of it either. Then I saw this short last week and it made sense who was complaining…
I consider myself a bellwether of if a movie is going to be popular (not necessarily good, but popular), because I do not enjoy the cinematic experience. It’s boring, it’s too loud, the food sucks, the seats suck, I can’t pee, I can’t smoke.
I just saw Odyssey in theaters. The last movie I saw in theaters was Barbie. And before that, Everything Everywhere All at Once. All of these were hugely successfull and popular, and imo they were all wonderful movies , which I think means a lot coming from me because i hate movies. I don’t say this in a pretentious way but in fact, quite the opposite. If a movie appeals to me, it has appealed to the widest possible audience, and is probably a pretty good movie.
You didn’t actually say whether all/any of these movies appealed to you, though. Did you like The Odyssey? Also, you really should have checked out Obsession. That movie is way too good to reduce to just a home theater viewing.
I did say I thought they were all wonderful. Enjoyed them all. Odysseus was too loud in the theatre and i wish it had had an intermission so i could have peed, and i could have done with less violence, but it was a great story. I forgot I also “saw” Babylon in theaters. I fell asleep right away and woke up a few times but have no idea what it was about. I’ve never heard of Obsession and am not really interested. I wasn’t interested in Odysseus, just went because a group of friends had a spare ticket and i wanted to hang out with them. Did not realize it was three hours long. Figured I’d fall asleep, but I didn’t!
On a side note, it kind of feels like zendaya and Anne Hathaway are the only two actresses in the world right now. There were two movie trailers with them as stars before the feature film in which they played major roles. They are both so lovely, but I am fatigued and there are so many other talented people ! This is another reason I don’t like movies. It’s harder and harder to enjoy the characters instead of just seeing “Anne Hathaway again, but in a different outfit” or “zendaya the goddess/space princess/spiderman/junkie”
ETA I saw Here the tom hanks movie at my house and it was maybe one of the most interesting and enjoyable movies I’ve ever seen. I got to pause it to pee, I got to smoke weed, I got to cook good food to eat while I watched it, I got to cozy up on my couch w my cat, I got to rewind if I didn’t understand a part or missed something. I got to adjust the volume. 10/10 viewing experience. No part of it would have been made better by having the screen be big.

Nolan’s «Odyssey» is a mediocre film, and praising it solely because it «defied the right» is embarassing.
No one is watching it to defy anyone.
I haven’t watched it, but that’s not what I’ve been hearing from friends who have, nor from online reviews.
It’s not praise to say it’s successful.
More than that, it’s sorta funny that this is the movie chuds are mad about, when Nolans movies are just classic blockbuster stuff. It’s not woke in any meaningful way, it’s not high art or anything. It’s just what Nolan always makes.
Why do people think others are just doing things to defy them, also they are cultural or moral arbiters or important enough to defy
I mean it happened with countless Disney movies.
