No, I agree, there is huge potential to get back on the curve or even blow right through it, but currently and over roughly the last decade, moores law has been dead. At some point in future compute will grow massively. Humans have only been around for 10,000 years, and silicon tech isn’t even a blim in that history. Give it another 10, 100, 1000 years, we will be able to brute force anything we currently think is out of scope. But in the short term, the here and now, it’s worth exploring more elegant solutions that don’t require compute beyond our current availability

One of the reasons people keep making the same “mistake” is because moores law isn’t actually a law, and just an observation that was true from the 1960s to 2010s, so rightly assumed moores law wouldn’t go on forever so relying on ever increasing availability of compute wasn’t the best strategy.

Moores law has been dead for years now and the growth in compute is gradually slowing further. Yes, compute will continue to increase, but the pace is slowing and there is potential for it to stagnate.

The vast majority of the world uses compatible voltages, so just a basic adapter is all that you need. The only places using odd voltage requiring a transformer are Japan and Northern America.

However for things with a power brick like a ps5, you just need to buy the correct power brick.

You can get universal plug sockets that accept any plug, see them in the middle East a lot. Obviously they only work with 220-240 v

Mine isn’t there as an option, the internet was designed and built to be a free and open decentralised place. power, data, and control over the internet shouldnt be concentrated in a small number of corporations or governments. Instead, infrastructure, identity, content, and money should be spread across many independent nodes that no single entity controls. The fediverse is the return to what the internet always has been and always will be, just there was a small blip over the last decade or so where we lost our way.

I use it on all my machines. Debian, arch and void Linux. I have an efibootmgr script on each machine with my setup in, so if I ever need to change a setting, I update and run the script. In void, I have a hook for dracut to call it so everything stays working whenever I have a kernel update. It’s very simple and easy once you get the hang of it.

Mine just runs over my music directory on a cron and tags what it wants. I don’t pay any attention to it. I haven’t come across a mis tagged track yet. Maybe I will at some point?

Unfortunately, you do what everybody else does. You use your reading, patience and time to research test and try various options over the course of weeks, months and years until you get experienced and knowledgeable about Linux and the ever changing options and configurations. There is no ultimate manual that tells you everything there is to know about Linux.

The only questions you really need to ask when picking a distro are which one aligns best with your effort, skill and preferences. To begin with prior to using any distro, those are very low and basic, so you want to start with a low effort quick and easy introduction to Linux. Start with a live distro to play around with. Then decide how much hand holding you need from there to choose which distro you actually want to commit to at the start. Then after weeks or months on that first distro, you will figure out what you like and dislike, which will guide your choices to move to the next distro. To begin with is all about learning and experimenting.

I can’t directly stop trump waging war on Iran as much as I can stop Putin waging war on Ukraine. But if I can contribute in some way to helping mitigate damage I will.

Everybody goes through hardship at some point in life regardless of circumstance, and to minimise that is not right, but even people in a war zone are entitled to find happiness and joy in the small things. But I also appreciate circumstance change the ability to control these feelings but don’t completely remove that ability.

I think we are on 2 sides of the same coin. Although we have very different views and outlooks, I feel a lot of what you said has truth to it, albeit we are both giving our views and opinions and I honestly don’t believe either of us is correct, just different.

What you call truth I call opinion. We are all entitled to our opinion, but opinion is a very personal and individual thing. I read the news daily and follow what is going on, the good and the bad. But my perception and view is totally different to yours. I see life and the world as an imperfect but remarkably interesting, exciting and enjoyable thing. Would I change things if I could? 100%!!! Do I worry or think about the stuff out of my control and that doesn’t impact my life in the here and now? No, not at all. I think about my life, how I spend more time pursuing my hobbies, and the things I enjoy doing. I focus on my family and friends, their trials and tribulations, and try to help and improve their lives today and tomorrow.

There isn’t one. Build incrementally, and adapt and modify as it grows. Starting out, you have no idea where you will eventually end up. It’s a journey and a learning experience bespoke to you. Start with a basic dedicated device as a server that’s cheap. Add a service and get it safe and secure. Once you are happy with it and it is reliable and solid, add another service… Rinse and repeat.

I agree with what you said though. The perspective you choose is exactly that, a choice. The question comes down to what you want to choose. If the objective is to be happy and less anxious about life, then choosing the perspective as I outline really helps. Some people enjoy or prefer to view the loudest issues, to listen to the loudest people, the loudest groups, and that is a choice. I also appreciate some people find it hard to ignore these things so choice is harder, with the access to information available. There is no choice that is better or correct, just options we have in life.

As a thought experiment for yourself, do you think you would have felt safer during the height of the cold war with the imminent and constant threat of nuclear destruction compared to now where that threat has been alleviated somewhat?
