See You,Tube: Apple dump YouTube from iOS

Thoughtful bit over on Hypebot about Apple's decision to not renew its deal with YouTube to have a baked-in app on iPhones and iPads the moment you've finished making the unboxing video.

There's a slightly cloudy view about if this means people will start to create ad hoc HTML5 apps using Safari bookmarks (at a guess: nope) but this is the key bit:

When I shot this concert footage of my brother’s band, my iPhone encouraged me to upload that video to YouTube, as it still does today. In iOS 6, Apple’s default video destination of uploads will be Vimeo instead, as Mashable points out.

Have you been to a concert lately? There are a lot of iPhones there, many of them shooting audio and video footage. It won’t happen overnight, but gradually, Vimeo will replace YouTube as the place to see concert videos uploaded from iPhones.

It might not tip the balance in Vimeo's favour, but it's certainly going to strengthen Vimeo's position. You do wonder, though, if IAC has thought through what becoming the default location for all that iOS video might mean for its systems.

I'm in two minds about this - it's a lovely piece of work, but having a nubile, naked woman in your video is always questionable in terms of motivation - was the original idea 'a person dancing in a museum' or 'how can we get some tits into the video'? Nobody ever sold fewer records by putting a bit of t&a in the video. And, much faith as I have in Stars, I'm sure I can hear record company staff going 'please, someone, call this controversial, please'.

Also, the prosthetic tail looks like it's in the wrong place.

Julia and I used to live with John in Santa Cruz, CA. Now he lives in New Jersey. He goes by all sorts of amazing names like William Darkblood and Johnny American.

John once produced a video that claimed to be the long lost sequel to J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. Salinger supposedly authored this sequel direct-to-video. John submitted The Picture in the Rye to the Whitney Biennale.

John is a big fan of seminal avant-guarde filmmaker and Kansas City native Stan Brakhage. I think he would be a good housemate with Jonas Mekas, Ryan Trecartin and Thurston Moore. He makes real albums and fake album covers.

Clearer?

It's not going to get very much clearer, to be honest, as there's not much Goodbye The Band video around. Not enough to make a weekend out of. Barely enough to make a post from.

Back on the Pavement

Last weekend, it was the Des Moines IA Festival. Ashley from Tapes For Life takes up the story of what happened:

Hope you had a wonderful independence day. This weekend in Des Moines, IA the second annual 80/35 festival rocked the city streets with performances by Public Enemy, Ben Harper, Broken Social Scene, Man Man, the daddy of Indie rock.. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks! But the highlight for many was the performance at the Pre 80/35 party at the local venue the Vaudeville Mews on July 2nd where BOB NASTANOVICH of Pavement came out of retirement to rock with 80/35 mainstage act, Iowa's own The Poison Control Center! They played Pavement's classic "TWO STATES" off Slanted and Enchanted!

Tapes caught it on, well, tape:
