Demographics was a relatively new word in 1970. All of a sudden, it didn't matter how many people were watching your show, what mattered was who those people were. If the audience didn't fall between the ages of 18 - 49, then they were considered "bi-modal" (on one side of the numbers or the other) and the show was gone. The thinking at the time was that kids and old people made good people ratings, but it's a combination that did little for advertisers. Advertisers now wanted to target specific age groups because they had a wider range of products available for every audience.
The Nielsen top-twenty was a sea of bi-modals in the late-Sixties, so the networks started weeding them out pretty quickly. 'Dragnet', 'Daniel Boone', Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, and 'Petticoat Junction' were all top-rated shows in 1970 when the networks bit the bullet and cancelled them in favor of shows that would appeal to younger viewers - shows like 'The Mod Squad', 'The Interns', 'The Flip Wilson Show', 'The Young Lawyers', and 'The Young Rebels'.
The
Young Lawyers was the 'Mod Squad' without guns, the story of a group
of Boston law students committed to helping those who can't afford real
lawyers with their 'Neighborhood Law Office'.
In keeping with Seventies' tradition, the cast was an ethnically diverse one. Aaron Silverman (Zalman King) was the passionate Jewish idealist, Pat Walters (Judy Pace) was the street-wise black, and Lee J. Cobb was their more experienced advisor David Barrett, a successful lawyer who left a prestigious practice to help these young mavericks out. The plots were of the slumlords/police brutality sort at first, then moved into more serious cases mid-season adding new cast member Phillip Clark as conservative student Chris Blake. 'The Young Lawyers' lasted one season.
Meanwhile on Sunday nights in 1970, The Young Rebels was seen at 7:00, occupying the time-slot left empty by the cancellation of 'Land of the Giants'. 'The Young Rebels' is the story of four teenagers in Chester, Pennsylvania struggling against 'the man'. In this case, 'the man' wasn't the Nixon administration, it was the British - and the year was 1777.
Louis
Gossett, Jr. stars as Isak Poole, a blacksmith and former slave who
bought his freedom and teams up with the supposedly good-for-nothing,
long-haired son of the Mayor Jeremy Larkin (Rick Ely) to harass the
British occupying forces. In reality Jeremy is the leader of a group
of rebel fighters - his girl-friend Elizabeth Coates (Hilary Thompson)
and inventor/explosives expert (and Ben Franklin look-alike) Henry Abington
(Alex Henteloff) are in on it too.
Together these youngsters form the 'Yankee Doodle Society' and do everything in their power to cause trouble for the British - stealing their cannons, foiling their battle plans, and looking for any useful information to help the revolutionary government. Philippe Fourquet frequently appears as young General Lafayette, the only outsider to know their secret identities as freedom fighters.
'The Young Rebels' was one of TVparty's most requested television shows, but it only lasted a half-season. Turns out the young audience the show was attracting was too young, the network had unwittingly turned out another bi-modal.
