Christmas is coming...

So I have been doing a handful of craft fairs and also trying to get Christmas knitting done. I am only doing a few things for family who live far away this year, but still I am behind schedule. And I don't really know what to do about the whole craft fair thing. I like doing it, but I don't have enough free time to dedicate to it as a proper business. And it takes away from recreational knitting and crochet. I am still working on things the kids want, which won't get done until after the holidays. Unless I get to spend lots of time crafting over the holidays when others are around to play with the Babe. :-) One can always hope.

I think I might like GREEN!

Here are some recently finished objects. It occurs to me that I do like certain colours. Although the Changeling did pick out the King Cole superwash Merino in the olive colour for her Owls jumper. And I have been doing lots of other crocheted things for craft fairs. So much so, that my right hand was beginning to develop a bit of a tremor. Have decided to take a break and do some knitting instead. I am trying to work on the Rebecca cabled shorts pictured at the bottom, but the pattern is rather confusing and I need lots of time to sort it out.  They are also going to be for the Changeling, although the Meister is asking for her own Owls and Shorts too. Oh dear.

Making the world a prettier place...

and not being silly at all because I am getting older and my eyes are failing me.
The new reading, crocheting, knitting glasses have arrived.

Update on the craft fair. I sold 3 hats. At least I paid for the stall. I am doing it again, to see if I can pay for all of the yarn I used to make the hats in the first place. And now making some fingerless mitts as well, and more girly headbands and chokers and bracelets and things like that for stocking stuffers.

I have not done much on the cabled shorts for the Changeling, but goodness me the pattern is difficult to figure out, and I need a good couple of hours slot to get going. So far, I have not managed the couple of hours. They need to be uninterrupted hours. When will that happen?

2 things...well, 3 really.

I am doing another craft fair. I think I may try to make a business out of this. Nothing grand, but £100 - £200 a month would be great to help with the Boy's music lessons, and all those things that girls need too. So I am crocheting lots of hats. It came about rather unexpectedly. I wrote to the organiser of the monthly Horse and Jockey craft fair, and asked for details, she sent me details, and booked me in. So I thought, "OK." I guess that is what I needed, for the decision to be taken away from me, otherwise, I would pontificate endlessly.

Number 2 thing is that I have started the Rebecca number 10 shorts. Dear me, I have never read such a confusing pattern. Am asking for help from those who have actually made them. I wonder if it is me, the translation of the pattern, the way Rebecca patterns are written, or just these shorts. Most likely a combination of all those things, but it feels like I have started something monumental, and worth mentioning.

And number 3 thing is that I have finally given in, and bought some reading (knitting) glasses.  The optician says I only just need them, and gave me a prescription a few weeks ago saying that I could get some glasses if I felt the need. Well, the nights are drawing in, the light is leaving, and I feel the need.

It was the very fine navy blue mohair that did it.

Knitting instead of blogging

So having a 22 month old who has learned that if she grabs your working yarn, she will get lots of attention is fun, even if it does prevent you from being that productive. I have practically given up on blogging for the time being, but when I do get free time, I am still making things.

Baby knitting!

Yemma's dress test knit. Knitted yoke, sewn onto skirt. The skirt is actually a recycled dress that I made for my elder daughter about 10 years ago.

Beanie hat and flower made with left over bits. The hat is actually made with yarn that was given to me by another home edder years ago. It is at least 20 years old. So, does that make this vintage? ;-)

Shalom cardigan in Rowan Cashsoft Chunky. The yarn was a bit of a disappointment as it was not very well spun and had lots of knots and slubby bits. :-( But the finished cardigan is appreciated.

I have some more baby knitting to do as well. Am nearly done with 2 sets of booties for Al's colleague who has had a baby girl - 4 weeks early! And there is a new baby on the street, who is in need of a brightly coloured vest. :-)  Then I have to get started on some knitted, cabled shorts for The Changeling.

A Baby's cardigan...

Started on the 30th. Had to recast on the next day - 2 and a half more times actually. Don't ask me why, but I kept looping an extra stitch on using the long tail cast on. Finally got there in the end.


Am determined to accomplish some knitting! The Babe is taking up every minute of my day, and I think I am beginning to suffer withdrawal. I don't want to exercise, I don't want to go to the allotment, I don't want to cook, even eating is taking a back seat! I just want to knit, uninterrupted for a few hours...days. :-)

Anyway, I knitted happily until I got to row 7. Had to knit this one back a couple of times, not really sure what I was doing wrong. Partly because I was up at 6.30 am with a toddler on a Saturday, and trying to keep her happy with a Little Bear DVD while knitting. In the end, it took me 1.5 hours to do row 7!

But I am very happy with myself. I got to row 9 and thought, "They've left out a yf." But I didn't trust myself. Did it like it says in the book, THEN thought to check online. And there is it. The mistake in the published pattern.  I was right! So I think I am a proper knitter.

Next step...designer....in a few more years. :-)

Fund raising fail and fun away from home

The craft stall I did at Celebrate was a big fail. The festival is much smaller than in previous years, and I was one of three commercial stalls there, if you don't include food. I should have done the Didsbury one, but I didn't know it was on until I had booked this one. Poop. Oh well, I made about £40 if you count the hats that home edders bought when they saw me preparing. So I have about 40 hats to sell, as well as things contributed by Martine, and some crocheted chokers and hair bands. At least it was fun making them. I am much better at crocheting, and giving things away, than I am at selling them. :-)

Other than that, we have been on holiday. Well, most of us. Al and me and 3 youngest went to Penrallt, which is a magical place. The sea is so fun and healing.

The Meister in a Kayak.

The Boy spent most of his time with guitar in hand, making music in the caravan, by the fire, up a tree, or just walking about randomly in the fields. But here he is, enjoying the beach.

This was a return to a family camp that we went to for several years before the older girls' activities started taking precedence. It was so nice to be back, even without the two oldest kids. I hope we get to go back next year. But very glad we went this year, as we can't afford to go any place else this summer. It was pretty fab!

Didn't get much knitting done though. Started some socks for the Meister, and managed to crochet her a nice summer hat, but all of that sand was not condusive to knitty things. :-)

Just a rant

I have been crocheting like a madwoman lately, in preparation for the stall I have booked. This morning I woke up and sat in my chair to continue with crocheting some hats while listening to the Today programme on Radio 4. I listen to Radio 4 pretty much constantly, and although I think John Humphries has become a caricature of his former self, and I sometimes avoid the news in the morning if I want to have a happy day, I still rate the programming as superior to the networks I grew up with in America.

But this morning was one of those mornings when I just shook my head in disbelief and got a bit more opinionated with every news story. So my opinions are coming out...

Firstly, there was a news story about Network Rail. Apparently their profits are up by about 10 %, while their efficiency is down by about the same. They are 'slimming down' and 'devolving' some areas of the running of the network, but the spokesmen was adamant that they are not being broken up. The 'slimming down' is because of a report which says that rail costs in Britain are about 30% more than they have to be, and regularly more than our European counterparts. When asked by the reporter if the problems were because of the separation of train companies and network companies, he dodged answering successfully...while I sat there thinking, "Of course it bloody is!"

Then came yet another story on the proposed changes to the NHS. Andrew Lansley and the Conservatives want to make significant changes to the NHS. One of the phrases we keep hearing is 'Increasing competition in order to improve services to patients." Of course, I do think that there could be some changes to the NHS that would increase efficiency and patient care, but these are not them. As GPs keep pointing out, if you allow them to contract private health care providers, then those private companies are going to opt for providing the most common and cost effective treatments. The 'cherry-picking' that we keep hearing about in the news. That is the business model.  That is how profit is made, and why shops selling jeans have lots of pairs with 32 and 34 inch waists, but fewer pairs (if any) that fit if you are a 26 or 44. It is supply and demand and pretty bloody basic. So why don't the Tories understand that?

But then I was angered that no connection was made between these two stories. National Rail was privatised by the last Conservative government, in order to "increase competition and improve services to travellers." my quotes Breaking things up in order that several private companies can attempt to generate profit by providing services is madness. Services are services and should not be run on any business model. Network Rail are struggling, (although not financially) rail companies have done away with services to remote areas that cannot generate profit and travellers are being left stranded. Even booking tickets is mad because there are 20 options. It can cost you £100 to get to London from Manchester. Myself and friends have shown up at railway stations with tickets for trains that don't exist!  What happens when these things are happening when people's health and lives are at risk? Competition does not improve services!

Then I log onto Yahoo to see a story about the privatisation of the Royal Mail.  (I missed yesterday's You and Yours which had an piece about it so must go and listen to that.) But all I can feel, again, is that the business model is the wrong model for the Royal Mail.

It seems to me that their are certain services that are necessary for a population to be productive and efficient and for things to run smoothly. These are 1) an efficient and integrated transport system, 2) an efficient and regular postal service 3) and an efficient and anti-discriminatory health service. 

All of these things run better when they do not run at full capacity,(which is necessary for maximum profit) and workers are not stressed, and resources are available to deal with emergencies, and employees can trust their managers to make decisions on what is best for them and their 'customer' rather than what is best for their shareholders.People need to be able to travel, to get to work, to visit family, to live their live. People need to communicate and be able to receive and send goods. People need to be healthy, and to be treated with respect within all of these area.

Any society (even the Prime Minister's Big Society) needs these services to be run by itself and managed by itself in order for it to be of service to itself. How simple is that?

I am crocheting like a madwoman, trying to get lots of stuff for the stall I am doing at the Celebrate festival. Hats, headbands, choker necklaces, and hopefully a few little bags. I am getting very good at lots of different kinds of flowers. But I cannot seem to focus on much of anything else.

So I am distracting myself, by doing my favourite thing, looking at patterns on Ravelry.  Have come across this on somebody's blog and it is bloody wonderful. Attention any felters who are reading this (waving to Martine) but GO THERE NOW!

Poetry?

So today is Allen Ginsburg's birthday. Apparently, he once said,
"Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does."

This is  so true. Which is why, most of the things I compose in my head, never actually get written down. When I was younger, I used to write poetry. I rarely showed it to anyone because I was young and full of hang ups and didn't want to make that private stuff public. Now I am older, I don't care so much about what anybody else thinks, but I am so busy living a grown up life, that I don't actually write much. I have always considered myself a writer, even if I was only writing for a degree, or for myself, or for the EO newsletter. But now I have these blogs and I don't do much with them. My head is still going all the time, but really,  I guess I am pretty content to just be, and live in my shrinking world.

Lovely young things are a good reason to crochet.

I have booked a stall for the Celebrate festival in Whalley Range at which I will be selling my hats and things. So I am having fun writing up patterns and trying to size things. Hopefully I will get around to putting them on my patterns blog. I would like to get better at writing up patterns, so I can share a little crochet love, and encourage others to make their own lovely things. :-)

Here is the Babe in Hat and Dress. The hat is Paton's 100% cotton DK and is dominated by a split shell stitch, and the dress in RYC Cotton Jeans in Peacock Stitch which I found in a Pauline Turner book. Just made them up, and didn't write them down very well, so will have to try again. Oh well, at least there are nice photos.

The button band isn't perfect, so I will have to sort that out, but it works. And I had the perfect coloured buttons lurking in my sewing box. So all in all, pretty pleased. The Babe's outfit reminds me of the book we have My Mum and Dad Make me Laugh. It's the spots and stripes. :-)

Old Bag

So I have wanted to felt myself a bag for a long time, and watching all of Martine's posts about felt, finally motivated me.  I had some 100% wool from Dragon yarns, which I had bought years ago for doing re-enactment stuff. Some of it had been used to make Viking socks - naalbinding- and doing tablet weaving for belts and things.
So I had red, yellow, orange, green, and some dark blue from New Lanarkshire. I spent ages on Ravelry looking for patterns, and in the end I made one up. Also in the end, I decided to limit the colours, as all those squares were looking weird.
So I crocheted some circles in squares and crocheted them together and ended up with this.

After a couple of washes, it looks like this.

And I am quite happy with it. I would like to think I will get around to lining it, and adding a zip or poppers, but I think I know myself well enough to know that won't happen.

something for me.

I have gone back to the Buttercup. I started it last summer, with some yarn I got with a gift certificate my husband got for my birthday. It is nearly my birthday again. And maybe it is time I finished it?!
Good god, there are a lot of stitches needed to get around my boobs!

A shrug for the Meister. There is a matching halter...but not a photo of it.

This is the same cotton in an openwork mesh summer top for the Changeling. It didn't turn out at all like we planned, but she is happy with it. It was supposed to be baggy, but she likes it fitted, so I guess I get to try again to do a baggy one. :-)

 And this is the Granny Shrug that I am working on for fun with thinner yarn that I got from a Freecycler ages ago and haven't known what to do with. This is being done on a J hook, which I think is 6.5 mm .  The Changeling says she is interested in it if I turn it into a cropped top. We shall see.

There is also some work being done on another crocheted baby dress  pattern that I am trying to write up, and the toe up socks, and I may even get to work on my Buttercup again.

Owls

I have finished the knitting for the Owls jumper, but I am in a bit of a mood, so will write the story of it another time. (This is why I am in a mood.)
It is a bit tight in the armpits, so I don't know what to do about that. And the neck ribbing is a bit narrow as I ran out of yarn. But the Changeling looks lovely in it, and as soon I figure out the underarms and sew on a million buttons for eyes, it will be nice. And then she has to wait a few months for the weather to be appropriate for a wool jumper. :-)

Now I am going to do something in cotton. :-) Have been sitting in the garden knitting with Martine, so am looking forward to using cotton in the sunshine.

A new project :-)

I was given a new 6 cup teapot for Mother's Day. I guess I will have to crochet a tea cosy to go with it. :-)

Aha!

 

Here is the lovely green cotton summer dress. It is little big, but still wearable, and probably will be for the next few years.  It is the Ruffled Baby dress   with one fewer increases so as not to be quite so ruffled, and no sleeves, so as to be more summery. Just a row of shell stitch instead of sleeves, which is cute enough for the Babe. Also got some lovely heart shaped spotty buttons that match the green perfectly from Folksy  but necessitated me sewing up the button holes a bit. The buttons are worth it though. :-)

Also, so nearly finished with these socks that I shall just call them finished and post the photo.

They are made with Violet Green sock yarn, doubled and on 4 mm needles. I started at the cuff with a 1x1 rib, over 42 stitches, and then changed to a pattern of k3 p3 for 3 rounds, and p3 k3 or 3 rounds, to give a checkerboard effect.


Have also started a pair of toe ups, but not really following a pattern, more like following about 5 patterns, as I try to get my head around how to do this. Thank goodness for Knitty.com and this great magic toe-up cast on.

And here is cheeky Babe, who wouldn't stand still or look at the camera while I was photographing her in her new dress, but who was more than happy to climb all over me and do her best to prevent me from photographing anything else, other than her lovely smile surrounded by a few dairy free chocolate brownie crumbs. ;-)
