Justified In Light: The 2020 Platinum Vinyl Awards 1st Qtr - The Megapost

2020 is here, and it is time for our first wrap of the year. As always we begin with a megapost or megaposts that squeeze all the genres that contributed less than 5 entrants in a quarter. Children's Music and Remix Album had no representation this quarter. This post will cram in Compilation Album, Folk/Folk Rock, Alternative, Dance-Synthpop, and Electronic-Industrial. There are also three ties when we get to the single genre postings. You know how we love ties here at Night Beat HQ. Let's get to it.

Compilation Album

  • Various Artists - Simple Hymns: Songs of Worship

Folk/Folk Rock

  • The Porter's Gate - Neighbor Songs

Alternative Rock

  • Northlander - Forces of Light

Dance-Synthpop

  • Color Theory - Lucky Ago
  • Scandroid - The Light

Electronic-Industrial

  • Dear Gravity - The Pilgrimage Series: Arrival EP
  • Hammock - Silencia
  • Andy Hunter - Presence, Volume 4
  • White Collar Sideshow - I Didn't Come Here To Die
That starts things off with a bang. Single Genre from here on, and we begin with our first tie. Adult Contemporary leads things off. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Night Beat Rewind: Album Edition - December 2019

The final Album Edition Rewind of 2019 begins now. Like I said in the Single Scene Post, we are a little light this month. Bands take the holiday's off except for Christmas Music. Things will heat up again soon. They always do.

Christmas Music (Non-Eligible)

  • Admiration and Affection - Lessons and Carols 4.75 Emeralds
  • Somniscape - Christmas EP
The last month of Christmas Releases is the lightest. I guess if you haven't found a favorite already, you are ahead of the game for next year. In keeping with the gift giving season, as we move on to the judged music, there was only one album which missed the mark. That too will change as the year goes on.

Missing The Mark

  • King Stevian - Trap Tithe 2 2.75 Emeralds
This artist usually gets categorized as Rap/Urban, but I have yet to hear anything but talking and we don't do "spoken word" here. We do music. Plus, he spends all his time this time talking about legal documents, child support, and the like. Not the venue for this.

Pure Platinum Perfection

  • Bloodgood - Trenches of Rock: The Metal Mission of Bloodgood 5 Emeralds
  • The Lead - Burn This Record (30th Anniversary Re-Issue) 5 Emeralds
  • Manafest - This is Not The End 5 Emeralds
  • Scandroid - The Light 5 Emeralds
Four....Sorry. Four perfect albums is pretty good for December. A little surprising is the re-release by The Lead. The quality is a little thin (it was CCM in the 80's remember) and so I am giving it a perfect 5 based on the lyrical content mostly. Now to the stuff in the middle.

Semi-Precious Metals

  • 5ive - White Van EP 4.50 Emeralds
  • Coby James - Coby James EP 4.75 Emeralds
  • Northlander - Forces of Light 4.75 Emeralds
  • Nothing Left - Disconnected 4.50 Emeralds
  • Reba Rambo - Lady (43d Anniversary Remastered Digital Debut) 4.75 Emeralds
  • Saint - The Calf 4.75 Emeralds
  • John Schlitt - Go 4.75 Emeralds
  • Social Club Misfits - MOOD/DOOM 4.75 Emeralds
  • Sovereign Grace Music - This Glorious Christ EP 4.75 Emeralds
  • Stillman - Whisper EP 4.75 Emeralds
  • Joey Vantes - The Season EP 4.50 Emeralds
  • Kanye West - Jesus Is Born 4.75 Emeralds
  • The World Will Burn - Nothing As Real As it seems 4.75 Emeralds
2019 is in the bag completely. Happy New Year everyone.

Night Beat Rewind: The Singles Scene - December 2019

We are ready to close out 2019 and step into a new decade. Things are a little light in December, as is expected. I am keeping up with the Two Post Rewind, though, even though things may be a bit short.

    Christmas Music (Non-Eligible)

    • Isaac Carree - The Gift 5 Emeralds
    • Ben Ford - Silent Night 5 Emeralds
    • Keith and Kristyn Getty - Joy To The World/In the Bleak Midwinter 5 Emeralds
    • Keith and Kristyn Getty - Sleigh Ride/God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 5 Emeralds
    • Keith and Kristyn Getty - Though Who Has Rich Beyond All Splendor 5 Emeralds
    • Jamie Grace - The Story (Noel) 4.75 Emeralds
    • Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir ft Shaun Cotterell - The Best Gift 5 Emeralds
    • Radiate Worship - The King Has Come 5 Emeralds
    • Vineyard Worship - Angels We Have Heard on High/Glory to God (ft Tina Colon Williams) 4.75 Emeralds
That does it for Christmas Singles. Now on to the judged music. We begin with the Songs which did not make the cut. Perhaps I'm in the Christmas Spirit here, but there were none. On to the Perfect Songs.

    Pure Platinum Perfection

    • Antarctic Wastelands - Star Trails ft Somniacs 5 Emeralds
    • The Choir - Counting Stars (One Republic Cover) 5 Emeralds
    • Jordan Feliz - Faith (Fe) ft Evan Craft 5 Emeralds
    • Lou Fellingham - Jesus You'r With Us (Live) 5 Emeralds
    • For King and Country - God Only Knows (ft Dolly Parton) Team Timbo Remix 5 Emeralds
    • Tori Harper - Outsider 5 Emeralds
    • Icon For Hire - Blindside 5 Emeralds
    • The McClures - Waymaker (Live at Bethel) 5 Emeralds
    • Passion - There's Nothing That Our God Can't Do (Live) 5 Emeralds
    • Powerhouse Fellowship Soul Choir ft Shaun Cotterell - I Believe In Miracles ft Patricia Shirley 5 Emeralds
    • Rend Collective - Your Name Is Power (Acoustic) 5 Emeralds
    • Scandroid - I Remember You (Lucy in Disguise Remix) 5 Emeralds
    • Scandroid - Purified 5 Emeralds
And finally, the music in the middle.

    Semi-Precious Metals

    • Brooke DeLeary - Me Time 4.75 Emeralds
    • Connor Flanagan - IDK 4.75 Emeralds
    • Adam LaVerdiere - I Can't Believe (Yet Still) 4.50 Emeralds
    • Derek Minor - Swish (ft Greg James) 4.50 Emeralds
    • Gardner Pippin - Only God 4.75 Emeralds
    • Psalm - Hero's Lament 4.75 Emeralds
    • Shane and Shane - How Great Is Your Love 4.75 Emeralds
    • Social Beingz - Legacy (ft O'Bros) 4.75 Emeralds
    • JSteph - Home (ft Moflo Music) 4.75 Emeralds
The final Single Scene of 2019 is in the books. On to 2020. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Phoenix Rising: The 2019 Platinum Vinyl Awards 1st Qtr - Remix

I know there are those who would dispute that Remix Album is not a genre, but the purpose of the Remix is to make something new out of something else. Since a good remix barely resembles the original it could be considered a new genre.

        Remix Album

        • Celldweller - Remixed Upon A Blackstar
        • Celldweller - Remixed Upon A Blackstar Instrumentals
        • Plumb - Crazy About You (Remixes)
        • Scandroid - The Darkness
        • JSteph - Glory: The Remixes
One big comment, about Scandroid. You may see The Darkness in multiple categories. It is one album, but it includes a section of original songs, remixes of those songs, and instrumental versions of the same songs. We go from one tie to two. Our next section is a two way tie. Electronic - Industrial is next. Until then, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

Phoenix Rising: The 2019 Platinum Vinyl Awards 1st Qtr - Dance

We begin with a Dance. No, don't worry, not me. The Dance genre is one of four genres to make the initial bar of 5 entries. It also represents our cutesy title.

        Dance-Synthpop

        • GAWVI - Panorama
        • Influencers - On Earth/In Heaven
        • Kevin Max - Romeo Drive
        • Matthew Parker - Daydreamer
        • Scandroid - The Darkness
The Darkness is Scandroid's Third Album (other than remixes and compilations), the first two are Scandroid and Monochrome. It's hit song is Phoenix. Moving on alphabetically, we go with Gospel (The real kind). Until then, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

        Embrace The Darkness

I was born in the 60's, had my childhood in the 70's, and came of age in the 1980's. It was a much simpler time back then, especially musically, and sometimes I miss it. Well, except for bell bottom jeans, perms and the disco era. Some things are best left forgotten.

The 80's was the golden age of Music, and really the birth of Christian Contemporary Music, though you can push it into the 70's. Woodstock happened in 1969. Larry Norman's Upon This Rock published in 1969, is generally thought to be the first CCM Album and kicked off the Jesus Music Era, which some have ending in 1989, but I would say really ended as the 80's began and Christian Music began to become a force in the Music Industry at large.

The hardware was simple. There was the 45 or single. It had 2 songs. Side A was the radio hit. And then there was the B-side. They didn't need to be from the same artist. A 33 or album was usually 8 to 10 songs, with 5 to a side. All could be hits, or none. Around the middle of the decade a hybrid appeared called an extended play disc or EP. it usually consisted of 5 songs.

Throw simplicity out the window. It's time to embrace The Darkness, the latest genius release by Scott Allen (aka Klayton). Multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire with numerous side projects, this one Scandroid (he is also Celldweller, Circle of Dust, Argyle Park, Klank, and Chatterbox. Tired yet). Scandroid is his 80's Synthwave persona, and it is probably my favorite, though It's hard to pick among the excellence. This is Scandroid's Third "Album", and the label is up for debate. There are 18 tracks, which would technically make a "Double Album". Yet there are only 6 original songs, which would make an EP. The 18 tracks are arranged in the following order: The 6 Original Tracks (Into The Darkness, Phoenix, The End of Time, Onyx, Red Planet, and Out of The Darkness), then there are 4 remixes of the vocal tracks, and then there are 8 more instrumental tracks (Into the Darkness is also a very short instrumental), 4 of which are remix instrumentals. So its 2 EP's and an album combined.

I was sold on The Darkness (there was no title at the time) when I heard Phoenix, and so did everyone else. Soundcloud had that song with almost 11,000 plays:

        Another life begins, sanctified
Freed from a thousand sins, that have died
fear no uncertainty, anxiety or unbelievers
Spread Wings of Fire, Born Again.

Can I get an Amen, somebody.

Scandroid is really meant to be experienced, and you can't do justice with talk, so I have included the soundcloud playlist for The Darkness. All 18 Tracks. We Are Phoenix. A Perfect 5 Emeralds. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

The end of a year and the start of the next. It's a special time. We are in the swing of things here at Night Beat HQ. I think Youppi got into the spiked eggnog at the Christmas Party. Wearing a lampshade and singing Frere Jacque non stop. Oh well. Here's to the New Year.

We have come upon the end of the 3rd Quarter of 2018, at least here at Night Beat HQ. Our Platinum Vinyl Eligibility Year goes from October 1- September 30. In honor of our Summer Time Travel we have given the quarter the title "Don't Stop Believing" in honor of the 1981 Song by Journey of The Same name. Just listening to the song on the internet I thought "This Will Preach", which is funny considering one of the authors, Jonathan Cain, is a Christian and married to Paula White, evangelist.

We start with the genres that didn't get enough eligible entries to merit their own post. We will make two of these mega-posts this quarter, seven genres being combined. First up is Alternative Rock, Folk/Folk Rock, and Instrumental Music.

              Folk/Folk Rock

              • Christafari - Original Love
              • Christa Wells - Velveteen
Folk tends to be a dumping ground for "ethnic" sounds. I really don't know where to put Reggae, Jazz and other unique sounds. There are never enough of them to justify a separate category. Christa Wells is more of the standard "girl with guitar" folk artist.

              Alternative Rock

              • The Choir - Bloodshot
              • Kevin Max - AWOL
              • Kevin Max - AWOL Deluxe Demo Sampler EP
Not much to say here. Two veterans (actually, one pioneer). Both deserve to win, one may.

              Instrumental Music

              • Amman/Josh -- Pieces
              • Salt of The Sound - Meditations, Volume 3
              • Scandroid - Dreams In Monochrome
              • Somniscape - Calm, Volume 1
A little explanation here. Amman/Josh is a new group signed by Hammock, consisting of Amman Abbasi and Josh Varnedore. They are a sort of trance instrumental. Somniscape is a instrumental side project of Eric Ooyoung aka Future of Forestry, to showcase his instrumental side. The vocals side will stay Future of Forestry. Next up is our final megapost with Adult Contemporary, Children's Music, Heavy Metal and The Remix. Until then, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

              Music Video Monday: Sorry

Welcome Back to an all new edition of Music Video of Music Video Monday. We are expecting (or dreading, depending upon your opinion) another nor'easter. Predictions are from 3-18 inches, which could mean anything. The only thing that is certain is that POLAR BEARS, WOOLLY MAMMOTHS AND SABER TOOTH TIGERS WILL SOON BE ROAMING OUR STREETS AS THE WORLD TURNS TO A BLOCK OF ICE (sorry, I started channeling the Weather Channel Report. What do they know, they are in Atlanta). We should get an inch and a half. On to the music.

We begin with the Future of Forestry. Eric Ooyoung thought he could slip a release past The Night Beat, but we found it just in time. We start out with the video for Seer.
Next up we move on to a little Darkwave 80's electronica. Scandroid has been hot lately, and this is the Music Video for Afterglow, which is on Monochrome, which slipped under our radar (it came out October 27, 2017)

And finally, we end with Stryper. They are about to make the Christian world nervous with the soon coming album God Damn Evil.(They had a fit over THWTD). This is Sorry.
Time to hunker down. Until next time, I am Awaiting Your Reply.

              Music Video Monday: Resurrection

That is definitely the feeling here at Night Beat HQ. After all it has been months since we last met. You would feel right if you felt abandoned. But we are still here. We are going to crank things up as the year gets started. We begin with a confession. As a music blogger I occasionally get "Hey, Check me out" notices on social media from bands. As a (mostly) Christian Music Blogger I have to be careful who I endorse (though there is a lot of wiggle room in the fringe). When a band called +Death Requisite contacted me, I admit, I wimped out. I figured with a name like that they can't be Christian. I was wrong. I found this lyric video for Redemptio Per Deicide. Thank God for Lyric Videos with Growl Lyrics. Anyway, the Theology is A+. A band I highly recommend. Revisitation is in the Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Pool for #PlatVnyl8 (we are in the judging for #PlatVnyl7. Patience is required).
Part of Resurrection now follows. I have always been somewhat unconventional with my take on the CCM scene. Having started off in the Jesus Music/Coffeehouse Era in the Northeast I have aged into Hard Music. Plus I have always had a soft spot for the music of the 1980's. Personally it produced the Best Music Ever. One of those songs was Shout by Tears for Fears. It came out in 1985, during my tenure as a DJ at WENC. Now it is covered by +Scandroidofficial . Personally, I think it is note perfect to the original.
Scandroid is a synthpop project by Klayton of Celldweller, Argyle Park, and Circle of Dust. The Latter has made a comeback after 20 years, and the new album is called Machines of Our Disgrace. This is the video for the title cut.
That does it for this edition of Music Video Monday.  Tomorrow we will return with our announcements of the 1rst Quarter of 2017. Until then, I am Awaiting Your Reply.
