The last Carty story I featured was this, the everyday story of a 20 year old construction worker being shot at hs own wedding reception. A Martin Carty was one of the accused.

At the time I wondered if it was a travellers tale. While no paper said so, the story just had that air about it.

Seems so. Note however that travellers are not stupid people. This was planned and organised - a lot better planned than the first hit.


A man facing an attempted murder charge broke out of the dock, bit a policeman on the nose and fled from a court yesterday. Jason McInerney - who is accused of shooting a bridegroom at a wedding reception - was on the run last night after the breakout.Prosecutor Ian Hope threw off his wig and gown and set off in pursuit of McInerney, but was tripped up in a corridor by a man thought to be among a gang of accomplices who had arrived to help with the pre-planned breakout.

Although McInerney escaped, his brother Kurt and Martin Carty, the two other defendants on attempted murder charges, were caught by police and security guards before they could reach the exit at Reading Crown Court. The trial had only recently been moved from a courtroom with a higher level of security. Last night police warned the public not to approach McInerney as they continued to search for him.McInerney, of Romford, Essex, is from Britain's travelling community, with contacts across the country.

His parents' home, in Blaxston, near Doncaster, was alleged to be where McInerney, his brother and Carty, 18, set off from before the shooting at the Skyways hotel in Slough in November 2006. They were accused of attempting to murder Joseph Mitchell by shooting him in the groin during his wedding reception. They also deny robbery, relating to the beating of a man whose high-powered VWGolfR32 they allegedly stole to use as a getaway car.

Mr Mitchell gave evidence against them at the start of the trial, which had been moved from the high-security Court Six, where it had been held for the past three weeks to the lower security Court Two, to make way for a murder trial. A witness said it was no coincidence that the breakout took place on a day when armed police, normally stationed outside the courthouse in connection with the murder trial, were not present because that trial was not sitting.

For such an unusual surname I do seem to see it on the news a lot.

A gunman wearing a balaclava burst into a wedding reception and shot the groom, a court has heard. Joshua Mitchell, 20, of Slough, was shot in the thigh in an apparent attempt to "sexually mutilate" him at Skyways Hotel, in Slough, Berkshire.

Jason McInerney, 20, of Romford, Kirk McInerney, 18, of no fixed address, and Martin Carty, 18, of north west London, deny Mr Mitchell's attempted murder.

Hmm. At least it wasn't Martin Carthy.

Reading Crown Court heard that during their break-up, Mary-Ellen Mitchell, then Miss Murphy, started speaking with Jason McInerney, who she said she knew as Paddy Delaney.

I wrote last year about the suicide of Thomas Carty, on remand charged with the murder of Helen Chung, and noted that the (unusual) name seemed to turn up in the criminal courts a fair bit.

A fair few commenters turned up and said quite forcefully that Tom Carty, while a rogue, would never have done such a foul deed, and that the real killers were still free. (It does appear however that after the murder of Mrs Chung, Carty was involved in the subsequent assault on the home of Bernard Dwyer and his family. His thirteen-year old daughter had a knife held to her throat. It looks as if it was a 'same night' operation. Make of that what you will.)

Mr Denison said Ms Chung, just 4ft 10in tall and weighing only seven stone, appeared to be an “easy target”. The gang lay in wait for her as she came back from work to her home, where she kept her life savings, just before midnight on November 5, and then ransacked her house looking for the cash, it was said. Mr Denison said: “They beat her about the head with extreme violence so that she shed a lot of blood around her house. They did that to try to force her to tell them where her money was but she wouldn’t and she didn’t.” All the men could find, he said, was a diamond-platinum wedding ring, belonging to her son, that she kept in her bedroom drawer, and a mobile phone, both of which they took along with her VW Golf.

Mr Denison said: “For standing up to these thugs in her home, all 4ft 10in of her, she paid with her life. She was beaten to death with a level of savagery which is hard to imagine.” He added: “They committed acts of the most terrifying and brutal violence in order to force their victims to hand over their hard-earned money. They intended and expected to take a lot of money and they were prepared to do whatever was necessary and use any level of violence necessary to get the cash that they were after,” he said. “But the victims they chose were remarkably courageous people. They were not prepared to give in to these men.”

Dean Atkins, 26, and Michael Atkins, 25, both of Uxbridge, West London, deny murder, two counts of aggravated burglary, wounding Mr Dwyer with intent and possession of an imitation handgun. Mr Carty, 21, committed suicide in February last year while awaiting trial.

Certainly the Atkins family don't seem to be getting a good press.

"Good fathers and loving families"

Hey - all that stuff about fathers and gun crime ? This Times report blows it out of the water.

"Lawyer’s killers had good fathers and loving family. They chose a life of crime."

So they came from the traditional nuclear family that us throwbacks are always on about, did they ? One mum, one dad, still married ?

Not quite. Delano Brown's father had children by three different women. Delano lived with dad and stepmum - until they split up and dad moved to the States.

Donnel Carty's mother and father never married and did not live together. Donnel's father and grandparents raised him.

Ho hum.

Elsewhere Donnel Carty's mates face sentence.

The court heard today how the men had a string of previous convictions for offences including robbery and burglary. Judge Blacksell, QC, said: "Carty and Brown were tried at the Central Criminal Court on two of the counts and also another count of murder, sadly for the same sort of thing that this jury has had to listen to, that led to the death of the victim." The group rampaged along trains in West London at night, using the interconnecting carriage doors to steam through the train and target potential victims. They would alight from the tube after the thefts, although on one occasion, jumped through the interconnecting doors onto the track when the train was halted in between stations after the alarm was raised.

During the trial Syed Hussnain described how he was one of the first targets as he travelled along the Bakerloo Line into town from Harrow in December 2005. He told the jury he saw a group of five to six boys wearing "hooded caps" walk past before a number of them demanded his phone. He said: "I resisted for 15 to 20 seconds, I held it tight. One of them hit me on the head, he hit me with a punch and my glasses were on the floor. I resisted for another few seconds before they took out two knives, and so when I saw those knives, I then gave my mobile to them."

In the same carriage a young woman had her handbag stolen. When her boyfriend attempted to stand up to the gang he was beaten. The following day Uthayakumar Kulasegrampillai was slashed around the face with a knife by Dennis. Mr Robinson called the attack a "particularly nasty assault", although the courageous victim still gave chase. Mr Robinson said: "The man who did the stabbing, Aaron Dennis, was handed the knife by someone else. He said, 'I have the knife. I'm going to kill you.' He extended it shoulder-height and slashed him in the face. "Dennis then stabbed him in the neck. he was bleeding profusely, but thankfully the injuries weren't as serious as they could have been. It was a particularly nasty assault. "Mr Kulasegrampillai ran after them on the train. He managed to get hold of one of them at the foot of the stairs and struggled with him to keep him there. He was asking for help from passers-by, but sadly none was given."

A man due to stand trial for the murder of a 65-year-old woman has been found hanged in prison.

Thomas Joseph Carty, who had just turned 22, from West Drayton in west London, was found at Belmarsh Prison, south east London, early on Saturday.

Restaurant owner Kam Fum Chung, known as Helen, was killed at her home in Hillingdon, west London, on 6 November.

Mr Carty was due to attend a committal hearing charged with murder, aggravated burglary, and threats to kill.

He was also charged with possession of an imitation firearm.

Police believe Mrs Chung, who owned a Chinese restaurant, was stamped and kicked to death by burglars who mistakenly thought she had the restaurant's takings.

Her 15-year-old son discovered her body.

An enquiry will be set up. The Prison Governors' Association will express regret. The Prison Reform Trust, the Howard League, NACRO and other pro-criminal groups will castigate the Home Office, and their complaints will be amplified by their friends in the media.

Around a quarter of prison suicides are of the chief suspects in homicide cases.

Not a terribly usual name, Carty. Yet it seems to turn up in the news a lot.

Jermaine Carty, by contrast, is an innocent man.


The sixth man in the dock was Jermaine Carty, 24, of Cheyne Walk in Handsworth, Birmingham. Carty was acquitted on the orders of the judge of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, and by the jury of one charge of possessing a firearm. He was said to have been the real target for the gunmen that night. The jury heard Carty had taunted Ellis on stage at the Rosie O'Brien's club in Solihull, West Midlands, the night before the shootings. Mr Carty was said to have grabbed a microphone to lay down a challenge to Ellis and his friends. Timothy Raggatt QC, prosecuting, said: "He was engaging in what amounted to taunting provocation directed at the Burger Bar group, boasting about the Johnsons and so on."

Mr Carty also made it clear he was carrying a handgun in the club, Mr Raggatt said.
