A grateful heart...

...is a happy heart! (as learned from Veggie Tales)

So i have decided to continue neglecting my thankful journal for this christmas/new years time, but to show that i am, indeed, thankful just the same by posting a note of thanks.

I am thankful for Christmas and God's love.
I am thankful for my family and friends.
I am thankful for my house-- except when i have to phone the pest control and plumber in the same day. gah!
I am thankful for rain. (I live at the coast, i have to be!)
I am thankful for sweet, caring seniors (who make up for the miserable rotters).
I am thankful for Sylvia, my car.
I am thankful for food.
I am thankful for my great job and fantastic employers.
I am thankful for second chances and the gift of change.
I am thankful for security.

Well, that's 10. And Oprah said that will do. :) Cheers!

nerds

besides thoroughly enjoying the delicious hard candies* (which, on this link, are sadly referred to as "old time candy"-- waddahaw?! i'm barely a quarter century!), i have a few other...erm, shall we say 'connections' to the term 'nerd.'
-i recycle. and no, sister steph, it's not just "washing your garbage;" it's preserving our environment for future generations! *big nerd smile*
-i had to be told that baggy clothes are not attractive. (thank you anika. and myrna-- who i didn't want to mention since she is retired and my then-bf's mom, but it emphasizes the nerd point beautifully.)
-i thought a 'banna hammock' was one of those hooks for hanging bannanas on. i still sometimes accidentally refer to the kitchen gadget as such.
-i don't understand scandalous jokes. even if they are explained to me.
-my mom still tucks me in when i go to visit.

well, the list could go on, but i think you get the point: wonka's nerds candies are delicious!

*i was the champion of the junior hallway in high school for catching nerds candies in my mouth. which reminds me of the terribly mean older girl who threw candy (of the non-nerds variety) at me in eighth grade because, supposedly, i had "looked" at her boyfriend when i was walking down the hall. ya! well! how do you like me now, tt?! thanks toby keith.

tiblets...?

anika says:
LOL you are the funniest ... you just put little tiblets on your blog. i like it
anika says:
(i don't know what 'tiblets' means, can you look it up for me?)
janie says:
uh, ok. i was just thinking that tiblets makes me laugh

just in case anyone is wondering, 'tiblets' has not yet entered the world of merriam-webster. but i feel that it has a chance for next year. and just in case anyone is wondering (still, again, whatever) my sm is the funniest girl ever. (even though she just left a comment implying that i am a nerd... hmmm, nerd...)

infosnacking

gahhhh! i am being spied on! i heard on the news this morning that websters has been watching me... because clearly there can't be others out there who are nefarious enough to do this!

and the gift goes on

jane: hey sis, have you bought anything for other sis or me yet?
sis: *sigh* no... it's just been crazy busy
jane: ya, me too. hey, wanna just leave it and then we can go shopping on boxing day and buy each other stuff for way cheaper?
sis: sure!

now that's the spirit!

Funeral Etiquette Questions
Is it wrong to:
  • show up right as it's starting, even if you work only 30 seconds away
  • practice singing harmony to hymns being sung acapella, in an different language
  • sit at the 'reserved' table with the relatives
  • not know any of the relatives
  • eat all the pickles at the table
  • leave after the lunch to go back to work while everyone else drives to the interment

I'm just askin' is all. Anyways, fear not, i behaved at the funeral this morning. I'm just glad it's the end of the year so i can reset the counter and hopefully keep it at zero deaths in the program for next year. *cross-fingies*

p.s. the title is due to the fact that the heater in our building is broken. nice mr. fix-it is here to take care of us now. the girls upstairs decided to bundle up and wait until i came back after lunch instead of phoning to get it fixed. riiiiiight.

lucky 13

i work with the sweetest people. kind, positive, encouraging.

darla (who has been renamed for privacy reasons, with help from babynames) suffers from dementia. sometimes she knows who i am, but other times she has no clue. today was a 'good day,' which means that she recognized me and remembered that we are friends, but she couldn't think of my name or any other details.

typically, darla will have a recurring theme during a visit. it's obvious that she has something on her mind, but her short term memory won't let her retain anything we've talked about. for example, in the first half hour that i spend with her, i expect to have the same question asked 8 or 10 times. usually it's a question about where i live, my age, or my work, or her environment.

today, darla had marriage on the brain. which was kinda funny considering my last post. in a very short (approx. 25 minute) visit, i was asked no less than a dozen times about my (non-existant) husband. after explaining why i was still single for the tenth time, i briefly considered mixing it up a bit and giving her different answers. but that would be confusing and mean.

instead, i cheerfully reiterated my status and patiently listened to her advice. darla is now 91 years old and was not able to marry her fiance because of war time circumstances beyond their control. i knew her before she developed this dementia, and even then she would sometimes lament about never marrying. today she told me to make sure to find a good husband have children because that is one thing she would do differently.

thankfully, this was balanced out by another client (who is 20 years darla's junior, now widowed, with children, granchildren, and great grandchildren) who basically told me that marriage is over-rated and not to waste my time. lol.

garcons

here's the deal. (haha, i think i should disable comments on this post; b/c then you can winch and whine all you want about it-- but it will all be in your head.) boys are not all they are cracked up to be.*

thank you shari for you great insight. thank you secret for freaking me out. i pinkie swear that i will never settle for anyone. because seriously, can you imagine finding out one day that the person you committed the rest of your life to, married you because they really love you... and because the person they love a bit more than you is unavailable. no thanks.

which comes to the age-old question: how do you know?! sure, some people say "you just know" and others say "i wasn't sure, but he convinced me and i trusted him to know" and others are just miserable and lonely. lol. now don't get me wrong, i am quite happy to be free to have fun these days. however, i was informed last night by an extremely intelligent lecturer that my happiness is at stake here folks!**

well, that's enough for now. i think i will just try to ignore these thoughts and see if they go away.

*present readers excused, of course.
**ok, so maybe he didn't say it quite like that, but oh well, you weren't there, so i can pretend (ani and andy, shhh!)

Dear knight in shining armour,
Please take your time before you come and rescue me; i am having lots of fun in this tower of singleness. However, if you could send a detailed letter of when and how you will be arriving, that would be great. Also, could you please bring your twin brother with you? You will be spending a lot of time with whoever marries my soulmate, so feel free to bring along someone you get along with. Thanks.
Love (pffff!),
Janie
xoxo
