Gospel Music From a Video Game: Bioshock Infinite

I've been playing a lot of video games as of late. I mean you have to do something to pass that time, right?  Well the game that I have been playing lately has a lot of wonderful music in it.  The game is called Bioshock: Infinite, and if you like video games you will love this one.  And of course you love music, or you would not be reading this blog.

Here is a wonderful old gospel song that I love, and that fits this game so well. This is Troy Baker and Courtnee Draper the voice actors for the main characters of the game.  They are performing the original version of "Will The Circle be Unbroken".  It is just wonderful.

Here is a slower version.

Notes from YouTube:

Courtnee Draper - Will The Circle Be Unbroken (Lyrics)
Bioshock Infinite

CHORUS
Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, by and by?
Is a better home awaiting
In the sky, in the sky?

1.)
There are loved ones in the glory
Whose dear forms you often miss.
When you close your earthly story,
Will you join them in their bliss?

CHORUS

2.)
In the joyous days of childhood
Oft they told of wondrous love
Pointed to the dying Saviour;
Now they dwell with Him above.

CHORUS

3.)
You remember songs of heaven
Which you sang with childish voice.
Do you love the hymns they taught you,
Or are songs of earth your choice?

CHORUS

4.)
You can picture happy gath'rings
Round the fireside long ago,
And you think of tearful partings
When they left you here below.

CHORUS

5.)
One by one their seats were emptied.
One by one they went away.
Now the family is parted.
Will it be complete one day?

CHORUS

Check out Kenny Wayne Shepherd on twitter @ https://twitter.com/KWShepherd .

Notes From YouTube:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band - Blue On Black

Lyrics:
Night, falls, and I'm alone
Skin, yeah, chilled me to the bone
You, turned and you ran,
Oh yeah
Oh slipped, right from my hand

[Chorus:]
Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
A dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Don't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh yeah, blue on black

Blind, oh, now i see
Truth, lies, and in between
Wrong, cant be undone
Oh slipped, from the tip of
Your tongue

[Chorus:]
Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
A dead mans touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Doesn't bring you back, yeah
Blue on black
Oh, blue on black
Oh, yeah

[guitar solo]

[Chorus (2x):]
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
Is a dead man's touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Don't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh yeah, blue on black

Hey
Blue on black
Tears on a river
Push on a shove
It don't mean much
Joker on jack
Match on a fire
Cold on ice
Is a dead mans touch
Whisper on a scream
Doesn't change a thing
Doesn't bring you back
Blue on black
Oh, blue on black
Oh wha oh, blue on black
Oh, blue on black

Why I have to Ramble On

"Mine's a tale that can't be told,
My freedom I hold dear;
How years ago in days of old
When magic filled the air,
'Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor
I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up
And slipped away with her."

I Feel Like Going to Church - Rev. Gary Davis - Oh Glory How Happy I Am

Oh Glory How Happy I Am

LYRICS:

Oh, when I was out in the world of sin
I had no one to be my friend
Jesus came and he taken me in
Glory, hallelu

And he taken my feet out the miry clay
He placed them up on a rock to stay
I thank God that I can say
Glory, hallelu

Oh, Glory how happy I am
Oh, Glory how happy I am
My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb
Glory, hallelu

New Blues & Gospel

I was out in darkness and I could not see
Jesus came and he rescued me
He claimed me and gave me a victory
Glory, hallelu

And one day while Jesus was passing by
He set my sinful soul on fire
He made me laugh and he made me cry
Glory, hallelu

Oh, Glory how happy I am
Oh, Glory how happy I am
My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb
Glory, hallelu

When I could not understand
Jesus, he give me a lending hand
Led me away to the promised land
Glory, hallelu

Oh, well he give me a horn and he told me to blow
Go in peace and sin no more
He led me away to the upright shore
Glory, hallelu

Oh, Glory how happy I am
Oh, Glory how happy I am
My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb
Glory, hallelu

I know something that's mighty swell
A sweet little story I love to tell
Jesus saved my soul from Hell
Glory, hallelu

Oh, stand back Satan, get out of my way
I don't want to hear not a word you say
I'm on my way to the King's highway
Glory, hallelu

Well thank God I got over at last
Thank God I got over at last
My feet is planted in the narrow path
Glory, hallelu

Oh, Glory how happy I am
Oh, Glory how happy I am
My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb
Glory, hallelu

When I had no home to claim
I begin to call on Jesus' name
He saved me from old Satan's chains
Glory, hallelu

Now I'm fire-baptized and holy ghost-filled
I'm out here to do my master's will
I must keep going, I must keep
Glory, hallelu

Oh, Glory how happy I am
Oh, Glory how happy I am
My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb
Glory, hallelu

Go Down Moses by Louis Armstrong

Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go.

Now when Israel was in Egypt land
(Let my people go)
Oppressed so hard they could not stand
(Let my people go)

So the Lord said:
Go down, Moses
way down in Egypt land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go.

So Moses went to Egypt land
(Let my people go)
He made old Pharaoh understand
(Let my people go)

Yes the Lord said:
Go down, Moses
way down in Egypt land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go.

Thus spoke the Lord, bold Moses said,
(Let my people go)
If not I'll smite your firstborn dead
(Let my people go)

'Cause the Lord said:
Go down Moses
Way down in Egypt land
Tell old Pharaoh
To let my people go

Tell old Pharaoh to let my people go

I Feel Like Going To Church: John The Revelator

On this Sunday morning I hope all is well with you and yours. Today's gospel blues selection is a favorite of mine, "John the Revelator".

John The Revelator mp3s @Amazon.com

According to wikipedia;

"John the Revelator" is a traditional Gospel/blues call and response song.[1] In the chorus, John of Patmos, the traditional author of the Book of Revelation, is writing "the book of the seven seals." At the time of the song's composition (and in modern times), John of Patmos was generally considered the same person as John the Apostle and John the Evangelist.

I like the Son House a capella version myself.

Robert Johnson - Crossroad Blues

According to Wikipedia;

"Cross Road Blues" is one of Delta Blues singer Robert Johnson's most famous songs. The lyrics plainly have the narrator attempting to hitch a ride from an intersection as darkness falls. But in close association with the mythic legend of Johnson's short life and death, it has come to represent the tale of a blues man going to a metaphorical crossroads to meet the devil to sell his soul in exchange for becoming a famous blues player. A fictionalized version of this legend was the basis for the film Crossroads (1986). It was also the basis of an episode of the television series Supernatural, which introduces the Crossroads Demon, which appears in later episodes.

Because of the historical significance of "Cross Road Blues," it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

lyrics

I went to the crossroad

fell down on my knees

I went to the crossroad

fell down on my knees

Asked the Lord above "Have mercy, now

save poor Bob, if you please

Mmmmm, standin' at the crossroad

I tried to flag a ride

Standin' at the crossroad

I tried to flag a ride

Didn't nobody seem to know me

everybody pass me by

Mmm, the sun goin' down, boy

dark gon' catch me here

oooo ooee eeee

boy, dark gon' catch me here

I haven't got no lovin' sweet woman that

love and feel my care

You can run, you can run

tell my friend-boy Willie Brown

You can run, you can run

tell my friend-boy Willie Brown

Lord, that I'm standin' at the crossroad, babe

I believe I'm sinkin' down

Blues Song In The Spotlight: Robert Johnson-I Believe I'll Dust My Broom

According to Wikipedia;
"Dust My Broom" is a blues standard originally recorded by Robert Johnson, the legendary Mississippi Delta blues singer and guitarist, on November 23, 1936 in San Antonio, Texas. It was released on the ARC Records label under the title of "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom. The song was later recorded and released on the Trumpet Records label by blues singer and guitarist Elmore James and became a surprise rhythm and blues hit in 1952. James version of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

Robert Johnson's version of "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom", had been originally derived from Kokomo Arnold's adaption of "Sagefield Woman Blues". Elmore James took the song from Johnson.

James closely followed Johnson's lyrics and included a bottleneck guitar blues riff used frequently by Johnson but not on his recording of this song. James' first recording was in 1951 for Trumpet Records with Sonny Boy Williamson playing the harmonica and Odie Johnson on bass. James also recorded it under the title "Dust My Blues". He became closely associated with Johnson's song, using the melody for some of his own songs as well and playing it in bottleneck or slide guitar, while Johnson's original was finger picked.

Lyrics:

I'm gointa get up in the mornin
I believe I'll dust my broom
I'm gointa get up in the mornin
I believe I'll dust my broom
Girlfriend the black man you've been lovin

She's a no good dooney

I believe, I believe I'll go back home
I believe, I believe I'll go back home
You can mistreat me here babe,

And I'm gettin up in the mornin
I believe I'll dust my broom
I'm gettin up in the mornin
I believe I'll dust my broom
Girlfriend the black man you been lovin

Blues Song In The Spotlight: Robert Johnson- Malted Milk

lyrics:

I keep drinkin' malted milk , try'n to drive my blues away
I keep drinkin' malted milk, try'n to drive my blues away
Baby, you just as welcome to my lovin', as the flowers is in May

Malted milk, malted milk, keep rushin' to my head
Malted milk, malted milk, keep rushin' to my head
And I have a funny, funny feelin', and I'm talkin' all out my head

Baby, fix me one more drink, and hug your daddy one more time
Baby, fix me one more drink, and hug your daddy one more time
Keep on stirrin' my malted milk mama, until I change my mind

My door knob keeps on turnin', it must be spooks around my bed
My door knob keeps on turnin', must be spooks around my bed
I have a warm, old feelin', and the hair risin' on my head

Blues Song In The Spotlight: Robert Johnson - Drunken Hearted Man

Lyrics:

I'm a drunken hearted man
my life seem so misery

I'm the drunken hearted man
my life seem so misery

And if I could change my way of livin'
it t'would mean so much to me

I been dogged and I been driven
eve' since I left my mother's home

I been dogged and I been driven
eve' since I left my mother's home

And I can't see no reason why
that I can't leave these no-goods womens alone

My father died and left me
my poor mother done the best that she could

My father died and left me
my poor mother done the best she could

Every man likes that game you call love
but it don't mean no man no good

Now, I'm the drunken hearted man
and sin was the cause of it all

spoken: Oh, play 'em now

I'm a drunken hearted man
and sin was the cause of it all

And the day that you get weak for no-good women
that's the day that you bound to fall

Catchin my goggle eyed perches

Blues Song In The Spotlight: Robert Johnson - From Four Till Late

Lyrics:

From four till late
I was wringin my hands and cryin

From four till late
I was wringin my hands and cryin

I believe to my soul
that your daddy's Gulfport bound

From Memphis to Norfolk
is a thirty six hour ride

From Memphis to Norfolk

A mans like a prisoner
and he's never satisfied

A woman is like a dresser
some man is always ramblin through its drawers

A woman is like a dresser
some man is always ramblin through its drawers

It cause so many men
wear an apron overhaul

From four until late
she get with a no good bunch and clown

From four until late
she get with a no good bunch and clown

Now, she won't do nothin
but tear a good mans reputation down

When I leave this town,
I'm 'onna bid you fare...farewell

When I leave this town,
I'm 'onna bid you fare...farewell

And when I return again
you'll have a great long story to tell

The Devil rode on a big black stallion: Question

Someone asked via email;

Hello there,

I'm looking to download this song I lost a long time ago on cassette. I remember the lyrics because i've felt them every once in a while. Even during stable relationships, haha.

The devil rode on a big black stallion traveling in a cloud of flames (x3)
Drifter was his name
Driftre destroyed teh hearts of women all across the land (x3)
he lives in the minds I know, of evrey travelin' man

and so on, till the main lines appear:
The wind's my lover
and Drifter's my steed
and the devil's theonly friend
I'll ever need
The wind, the Drifter, the Devil an' me
we ride together through all eternity

If you know these lyrics, please end my search and tell me where they come from!

Enjoy your day and greetings from Holland!

----------------------
So I go to my old friend Google and enter in parts of the lyrics to see what I can come up with.

I start with "The devil rode on a big black stallion traveling in a cloud of flames" no quote marks.

I get a lot of hits from literature about black stallions, it seems that many books were written about black stallions, named devil.

So I try a few other combinations because I figure that the asker of the question may not be remembering the lyric just right, as is often the case.

Again I am coming up with many hits to items that have black, devil, and stallion in them.

So I think maybe I should simplify the search and put part of it in quotes for an exact match. So this time I enter "The Devil Rode on a Big Black Stallion"

Bingo I get a hit to Charles Mingus' album "Changes One" which has the song Devil Blues.

Which has the lyrics; "The Devil rode on a big black stallion, ridin' on a cloud of rain..."

I am guessing that this is the song that you are refering to.

Which gets me to thinking, wait a minute Robert Johnson wrote a song called Me and the Devil Blues. Which led me to...

Probably most interesting of all;

Robert Johnson - Me and the Devil Blues

Feel free to send any blues questions that you might have to my email address above, when I have time I like to do the research and find answers to interesting questions.

As it heats up, try to stay cool and stay blue.

Blues Places - Shreveport Blues

As some of you who have been reading this blog for a while probably know I am from Shreveport, Louisiana originally. I was born and raised there and grew up in a neighborhood just out side of downtown called Allendale. We had a few juke joints like that one on the corner of Dale and Alston St. They tore that building down a long time ago though.

They are busy tearing down that whole neighborhood. Things have changed, the blues there have changed too. I remember walking down Alston St. and passing this one house where a lady sat on the front porch. She listened to B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone" over and over. I probably passed by that house hundreds, if not thousands of times. And that was the only song I ever heard coming from that house. It was not until I became an adult that I understood the kind of blues she had. That is the kind of blues that people in Shreveport have.

I have done a few post on my hometown blues favorite Leadbelly. The video below is a cool one that I had not seen before, it is of Pete Seeger talking about Leadbelly.

And I also want to introduce some to another Shreveport native who in my assessment is the real deal when it comes to the blues. Consider young Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Another blues song about Shreveport that some of you may know is this Memphis Minnie song.

Shreveport Blues

I've got a man in Shreveport, he's forever on my mind
I've got a man in Shreveport, he's forever on my mind
When I lay down at night, he bothers me all the time

He's a long tall papa, live mostly on Texas Avenue
He's a long tall papa, live mostly on Texas Avenue
And if I don't get that man, I'll forever have the Shreveport Blues

He's a sweet lovin' man, one that knows his stuff
He's a sweet lovin' man, one that knows his stuff
Takes me in his arms so easy, he's not a bit rough

I never get tired of lovin', cause he's got all I need
I never get tired of lovin', cause he's got all I need
I want my lovin', ten or twelve times a week

Shreveport Shreveport, Shreveport where is my man?
Shreveport Shreveport, Shreveport where is my man?
Shreveport Shreveport, Shreveport where is my man?
