(Sat, Sept 19) Central Avenue Jazz Festival, FREE! Los Angeles played an essential role in the development of 20th-century jazz. Musicians like Dexter Gordon and Eric Dolphy grew up around Central Avenue, while legends like Art Tatum and Jelly Roll Morton were drawn to the area by its wealth of live performance opportunities and recording industry presence. This annual festival pays tribute to that golden era with stages outside of the still-standing Dunbar Hotel, which once served as home base for visiting artists like Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton.

(Fri to Sun, Aug 21 to 23) Super Girl Surf Festival, FREE! Summer would not be complete in Oceanside without surf competitions, but few are as big as this one. It’s billed as the world’s largest female surfing event, and more than 150 surfers will be catching waves. The festival features other competitive sports, including volleyball and flag football, plus networking through workshops and a speaker panel. In honor of the festival’s 20th anniversary, about 20 bands and artists will perform at the Junior Seau Amphitheater. Oceanside Pier.

This second annual festival brings a slate of authors, entertainers, and booksellers to the USD campus for a celebration of the printed word.

(Fri-Sun, Oct 2 to 4, 10am) Avocado Festival in Carpinteria – FREE! Expect 60 bands across three stages during three days of festival! This is one of the largest free music festivals in California. The lineup spans original rock, country, folk, and cover bands. This year, the festival celebrates 40 years on the coast in Carpinteria, a city whose avocado industry has thrived for nearly 100 years. The event opens on Friday with a block party and continues on Saturday and Sunday with arts, crafts, and commercial vendors; food vendors; and more than a dozen nonprofits. All proceeds go to the Carpinteria Education Foundation and the Future Farmers of America.

(Sat & Sun, Oct 17 and 18 at 10am) Pismo Beach Clam Festival – FREE! The traditional festival is celebrating 80 years of shucking, and kicks off with a parade on Saturday morning, ending at Pier Plaza, where live bands perform, vendors hawk goods, and kids jump in bounce houses. Commercial and food vendors, a beer garden, bounce houses, the Kids Clam Rescue (an interactive learning experience for children of all ages), and a ticketed clam chowder cook-off round out the two-day fest.

(Sept 14, 2025 to July 26, 2026) Jaws: The Exhibition Los Angeles at the Academy Musuem of Motion Pictures is a FREE to attend admission for children under 17. For adults, standard admission costs $25. The newest temporary exhibition looks at Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking blockbuster film Jaws (1975). It is the first-ever exhibition of this scale at the Academy Museum, focused exclusively on a single film, and the largest mounted exhibition ever for Jaws, the Oscar-winning film from Universal Pictures. It celebrates the film’s 50th anniversary and revisits Jaws scene by scene, through original objects, behind-the-scenes revelations, and interactive moments.

(Fri-Sun, Sept 25 to 27) The 2026 Ohana Festival at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California. Curated by Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam band), this three-day, all-ages festival features rock, indie, and alternative music alongside pro surfing demos and environmental advocacy. By the time we published this festival the line up was not announced, but usually features high-caliber rock/alternative acts, and a pretty cool vibe!

LOS ANGELES COUNTY

The Summer Sessions Free Outdoor Concert at the Getty Center in L.A – Each year the series presents a diverse lineup of musical talents, many of whom mix and match musical traditions and genres. The series showcased a myriad of musical styles, from hip-hop, blues, and rock, to Latin boogaloo, Afro-Peruvian jazz, Mexican cabaret, merengue, electronic beats, Indian rhythms, and even Algerian trance music. Summer Series at Burton Chace Park – The Free Marina del Rey Summer Concerts are held in a beautiful waterside setting at Burton Chace Park. The series features Thursday evening classical concerts showcasing the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony, with Frank Fetta, conductor and guest soloists. On alternate weeks, Saturday pop concerts star celebrated musical entertainers. You are welcome to bring a picnic basket full of your favorite foods! Summer Series at Pershing Square – Pershing Square is an outdoor concert and event center located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. Summer Sounds on the Plaza, Costa Mesa – Argyros Plaza’s Summer Sounds on the Plaza series offers a lineup of live music reflecting a range of global influences found in Southern California. The events are free but adult guests must have a free Plaza Pass to attend. June’s performances are part of the Center’s Black Music Month celebration, highlighting Black artists and creatives.
