Sketching in Watercolour Pencils: Film

I just created a new film: it's a sketching demonstration using my Inktense watercolour pencils, done on location at Costa Coffee in Broomhill, in Sheffield. We did a SketchCrawl there in April and I realised the coffee shop's big upstairs window was a perfect vantage point.

The drawing I am creating is this one. It's A3:

Several people have asked me about using the watercolour pencils, so I provided a commentary as I sketched, explaining what I am doing. Hope it's useful.

Santo Domingo Sketches

Hey All!

So I've been wanting to post these sketches up for a while. I'm sorry for the delay but I do hope you enjoy. The urban sketching symposium was truly a magnificent experience for me and it was definitely a break from being on the the screen since I am studying Graphic Design at RIT. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the sketches and thank you for having patience.

Symposium 2012, by Karim López: #03

The train' sketch was made during Lynne Chapman excellent workshop "Quick on the Draw", where she told us to incorporate texts to the drawings in order to catch the sounds of our surrounding environments. The Coca-Cola Tourist Train passed by at that moment, with the guide explaining by microphone, and it the became the subject of the sketch. That afternoon, during the SketchCrawl, I was sitting at the cafe, drawing the people and tables in front of me, when the train crossed again. And the same text from the morning' sketch incorporated into the second one. Pretty interesting for me.

Hotel Frances

Figured it out at last!  Now I can say thank you to Idalina for helping me to blog and upload. My biggest thank you of all is to Idalina for making me come to Santo Domino and to Gabi for making it possible. I have learned so much, mostly to be brave. I cannot stop painting and sketching.

The workshops I attended were an insight for me, I had never even thought of simply sketching. Observing behavior patterns, ideas of how people behave, then catch a person's right moment, and best of all, they come over and chat. People are not embarrassed or, as with photos, angry, but rather take a sketch as a compliment. Even people in a  

'Don't look now, but . . . .'   country like England, when I visited for a few days in August.

Symposium 2012, by Karim López: #02

First "Drink and Draw" at Quintana, where after workshops people gathered to, well, drink and draw. Sketch at bottom is during the morning lecture of the second day. Tom Thorspecken was speaking, while Gabi Campanario listens. Great speech.

"Panoramas in four steps", workshop by Simonetta Capecchi and Claudio Patane. Simonetta remind me of one of my teachers at architecture school; she has the same spirit, and awesome at teaching and explaining things. And by the way, Claudio and Simonetta's drawings kicks plenty of ass. This panorama took forever: everyone finished theirs at the end of the evening and I was still outlining. But at least everything was in its place.

Este pequeño cuaderno vivió en mi bolsillo durante 4 meses entre el 2 de abril y el 13 de julio de 2012. Lo dibujé en Barcelona, Málaga y Santo Domingo. Aquí está con todas sus páginas, de la primera a la última.

This little sketchbook lived in my pocket for 4 months from april 2 to july 13, 2012. I drew it in Barcelona, Málaga and Santo Domingo. Here it is with all its pages, from first to last.

Santo Domingo #14 (dessert)

De Santo Domingo no he traido muchos dibujos de arquitectura y ambientes. Los estaba haciendo en el cuaderno que Laloran regaló a los participantes en el Simposium pero lo olvidé dentro de la catedral y no lo volví a ver. Paciencia.

Empecé esta serie con un aperitivo de marmotas durante el vuelo de llegada a Barcelona (último dibujo del viaje), y la cierro con un postre de marmotas durante el vuelo de ida a Santo Domingo (primeros dibujos del viaje). A veces la simetría me pone mucho.

I haven't  brought so many architecture and environment drawings from Santo Domingo. I was making them on the sketchbook Laloran gave to all the Symposium people but I forgot it inside the cathedral and never saw it again. Patience.

I started this series with a marmot aperitif during the return flight (the last drawing of the journey), and now I close it with a marmot dessert during the outward flight (the first drawings of the journey). Sometimes I get high on symmetry.
