Computer Virus Alert

Very timely, as I've been wrestling with the bill104 virus for the last two days. Via email:

Each year, the first week of April (coinciding with “April Fool’s Day”) brings an increase in spyware and malware infections. It’s become something of an annual tradition that causes havoc for computer users, lost productivity, and overall inconvenience. Not to mention potentially costing thousands of dollars in repairs.

We’re working hard to prepare for this onslaught and we’re up for the challenge. It makes sense, however, to remind computer users to be extra vigilant during this period of increased spyware activity:

Don’t open emails, files or attachments from people you don’t know.

Be extra cautious opening emails, files or attachments from people you do know.

Don’t be fooled by “scareware” tactics. Know what software you are using, and familiarize yourself with how it delivers warnings and alerts.

If you’re considering giving your social networking activities a break, now might be a good time. No one will miss you if you take a week off.

Stay away from websites that you haven’t visited before. Think before you click!

Run multiple layers of security software. There are many free and effective solutions that will co-exist well with each other. Remember, a single solution may not be enough, especially during this period of increased spyware activity.

Get and use whatever free stuff is out there.

Most importantly, keep it updated. The virus I have has been fixed for the most part, but it made some changes that cause any connection to update antivirus to fail. I can't even search for "bill104" successfully on the infected computer. Clever bastards, aren't they?

SUPERAntiSpyware

Remember this little thing I posted on Malwarebytes? It attracted the attention of the folks who make SUPERAntiSpyware.

They said "Hey, check us out, too!", so I did.

After running my regular Antivirus (AVG), I ran Malwarebytes, and it turned up a lot of stuff AVG missed. That's why I posted on it.

Shortly after installing SUPERAntiSpyware, I ran the Malwarebytes again, got a couple things, then ran the new program.

It turned up 120 tracking cookies the others had missed. It also has a monitoring feature that Malwarebytes doesn't have.

So, it gets the Alehouse stamp of approval and goes into my security routine.

This blogging thing is fun, and I get turned on to new stuff. How cool is that?

Now, if only Ruger would send me a new SR 556 to review....

PSA - Computer Scam

Not that I was ever in danger, but there's a new virus threat going around. If you get anything with a subject line - "Obama Amazing Speech" or similar, just delete it.

Snopes says it's valid.

From what Snopes says, it's not the email itself, but a link that will send you to a website that tells you to download a "new version of Adobe Acrobat" when what you are actually downloading is keylogger spyware. Don't do it. Bad juju.

You can now return to your regularly scheduled activities.

This Happened to Me

Last week, a Windows update caused me to lose all Internet connectivity. No, I take that back. The connection was fine, but I couldn't get online.

Called tech support, and the first thing he asked was "Are you running Zone Alarm?". Of course I am, so he tells me to disable it. I do, and wham! the Internets are up all over.

It seems that update caused it to happen. I wasn't getting any alerts from ZA, of course, so I have to disable it for all my computers.

Well, the good folks at ZA have addressed it, but now I'm going to address it:

Microsoft, I'm through with you. There's a Mac (or two) in my future. I started with Apple, and I have no problems going back.

It's been fun, I've really enjoyed buying all kings of video upgrades, memory sticks and audio stuff to keep up with your "improvements", but now I'll just put all that money into a Mac and be done with it.

I think Gates got out at the right time.
