Les Noces

The last two minutes of this piece are, for me, one of the classic moments of 20C music (maybe of any era) I'll have it at my funeral - if they can find space for the 4 pianos!

I've just upgraded to Firefox 3.5 and mostly it is far more responsive, I used to have all kinds of problems with YouTube and it feels a lot better (I do see some very slow scrolling on just one site which has lots of radio buttons. I don't know if that's a contribution?). Otherwise I'm very glad I upgraded.

Forsyths webpages are a bit of a blast from the past, and those colour clashes!
I also right clicked (or in my case left clicked) on the main frame - whichever one that is(!) and didn't find many security details. Then try clicking on the home page logo and watch it get into a frames inspired tangle.
The shop is wonderful - the website less so!

News

Well while everyone else has been preparing for Christmas - or not! - I've spent the past 4 days, seems like a week, rushing around helping to resurrect the work web and email server. It died with a dead disk on Friday. I do recommend warrick for recoving those lost bits of websites, it goes to various web caches and puts your site back together as they claim it was.
Anyway, in all the kerfuffle I missed the news on Friday that the Church Times blog mentions that the Scargill trustees hand the Scargill movement have agreed:

We are now pleased to announce that agreement has been reached between the Trustees of Scargill House and those representing the Scargill Movement for the purchase of Scargill House. This is subject to contract, survey and the approval of the Charity Commissioners. We value your prayers for the speedy exchange of contracts, the future of the Scargill Movement and the proposed Foundation of the present Trustees.

Sounds like good news!

Couldn't resist a vanity screenshot of the top search strings which lead people here (not that there are many of them). I won't quote them to avoid skewing figures further but there seem to be a fair range of subjects but maybe nog__ the n__ is what those seamen get up to on those icebound ships?

Brain hurts..

No doubt the Easter holiday is scrambling some of this, but at the moment I'm confused as to how an 8 day away delivery can be a 3-4 day service and why the economy takes even longer than the free one.

On consulting the referral logs for this blog, I see that someone got here through this search, they must have been sadly disappointed - I see I'm the number five hit for that search. Fortunately if you remove the 'Pier' from that first word this site is nowhere near the top

and this is a full length one from animoto, it takes rather longer to process but I would guess that Sunday early evening is not a good time to try. I am also having problems downloading it! (or emailing a link..) not sure whether this is the linux particular problem or just a problem with this user(!)

firefox

I've been trying firefox 3 - the first beta - and it looks pretty good, it even fixes this bug, and seems to be less of memory hog. It got installed elsewhere too after an upgrade on that machine from 2.0.4 to 2.0.11 caused firefox to crash on startup...I suspect something in a profile.. but I upgraded to 3.0b and that runs fine.

Advertising for all it's worth

Dave Walker points out the current state of the Church of England Newpaper website - totally bananas! If - like me you use firefox and NoScript (you wise people you!) you'll need to turn on scripting for CEN and adbrite to get the full wonder of this!

Ummmm

Our mail server hoster had an interesting day yesterday. We were unaffected though one of our sites wasn't and got the above screen when visiting the uk2 webserver. From Manchester their webserver was unaffected so we suspect one of their DNS servers was the actual victim.

Firefox's piece of fun

Just a piece of trivia, but I'm amused why firefox selects this as a favicon

for Peter Ould's website when it really belongs to Thinking Anglicans, which he reads, but I guess he's not in a lot of sympathy with :-) I think the translation dates from when his (PeterO) site was broken but I've no idea why firefox decides to give it a new favicon or how to unset it!

Now that's scary!
