perception.

i can't for the life of me remember who i had this conversation with....

here comes a little...  oy, self indulgence.

grief is such an odd thing.

when i think of grief, i immediately think of life leaving a loved one's body.... knowing you'll never again see them face to face, squeeze them close.... so on.....

but, then, i think of losing someone who is still, in essence, living...  someone who has left your life, but still ultimately breathes in and out, and whose heart still beats on.

there are so many variations, and truly, it is simply a matter of perception.

i'm trying to talk myself down, tell myself it's ok... to accept it and allow it to wash over me.....

it will happen, despite any resistance.

01/06/13

I want to say:

"...a kind of... sense of... how would one say..? ...equivalence, while being still so aware of differences."  Balance, comfort, acceptance, and an opportunity for growth.  These are the words and phrases that pass before my eyes, like a banner being pulled by an airplane.... the text floating almost violently across the sky, fighting wind patterns, currents and waves....

I'm seeing in vivid color tonight.  Variants of sour apple and lime green, turquoise, corals, all shades of purple.  As the sun dips below, deep blues slowly envelope, and small flashes of light distract, representing what we perceive as stars.

Sometimes I worry...  will my intensity prove to be a strength, or my weakness...

Time will tell.  In the meantime, I will hope for the best, and know that either way, I am already a stronger, more well rounded, and open person for accepting the experience.

...

i am feeling... too much.  i anticipated anxiety, an overactive mind.. but this is ridiculous.

i want to celebrate my independence, this new found peace...

...however...

my celebration is causing so much pain.

 where is the balance?

2013

I don't know how to handle what's happening.  It is beyond me, and I hate that.

I've been there.  I relate.

On the other side of things:  Look who I am and who I've become as a result of my experiences...  I am getting stronger every single day.  If forced to decide, I'd say it's all been worth it.

Here is to 2013, and continuing to move upward and onward.

12/18/12

now that i've found myself here, i don't know what to say.

anxiety has been bleeding through tonight, and my blood has always been slow to clot.

i want to say "it's unfair..." but who effing cares about fair?  apparently, it's my lesson, and i always seem to find the most difficult way through it.  ugh, i just said that.  yes, i tend to learn the hard way... but i try to think of it as progress at the very least, even if ridiculous.

i'm ashamed enough that i just wrote that, that i'm going to leave it there as a reminder of PERSPECTIVE.

more safe to say, i couldn't be luckier... still.  it hurts to hurt, and that's simply the way it is.

hiatus.

I feel like I haven't written forever....  Things have changed so drastically so fast.  I can barely wrap my head around it.

Right at this moment, I'm kinda overwhelmed.  The past week (almost) has been a lot better than the previous 2.  Time feels irrelevant and like it stopped, or at least really, really slowed down.  I've caught up a bit with the help, love, and support of those that mean most.

That's it for now.

Details to come.

confusion.

i'm submerged in it, trying to keep water from leaking into my nose and mouth. (i've never been a good swimmer) i tread.

see, i need time, that's the thing. and time usually requires more time. and so the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years pass.

did i mention confusion?

duality, 08/22/12, 10:44pm

Well, I've not come full circle quite yet, but I am:  utterly embarrassed.

Poor, poor Lindsay...  oh man, how indulgent is this?  I can't help but roll my eyes at the ridiculousness of it all.  Self-centered much?  Guilty, that's me.

I know full well that I am a lucky bitch, despite my griping and whining.  Yep, life was hard.  Still is, but that's the way it goes.  EVERYBODY STRUGGLES.  IT IS ALL RELATIVE.  IT'S NOT NECESSARILY A BAD THING!

Something I should mention...  I have a tendency to... um, not exaggerate, not on purpose, anyway...  I have always felt that I think and feel in a way most people might not possibly understand.  I have always been so overwhelmed, pushed to the brink.  I do not feel things just a little bit.  I wonder if it relates to the ADHD I've recently-ish been diagnosed with.  I'm quite sure it does, actually.  When the meds are doing their thing, I find I can absorb my thoughts, sit with them, sort them, attempt to deal with them, and often times, such as today, make it... as opposed to reacting irrationally and with a panic which has ruled me for as long as I can actively remember.

I woke up in a funky mood this morning, which is odd for me.  I'm possibly an extreme example of a morning person.  It is sacred time for me, and I relish it... get up extra early just to be able to squeeze in a few extra moments of the stillness, the beauty, and most importantly, the peace.  Anyhow, this morning, I felt off.  By 7:15am I felt very unsure that I'd last, but I was able to focus my attention on my responsibilities, and worked like a mad woman to distract myself.  I made the whole day without losing it.  (ok, ok... relatively)  I had my moments, but was able to hold onto perspective.  What would be worse:  staying at work where I had something to focus on, worst case scenario being a possible mess...?  or go home and actively try to distract myself from my obsessing thoughts.

It's kind of astonishing when it happens, as I have always chosen flight over fight... but not today.  I fought, and came out unscathed... abnormally stable, even able to rationalize these thoughts into text.

I have terrible self confidence, a result of never thinking very highly of myself.  I have allowed this emptiness to consume and limit my life in countless ways.  I think I might finally be nearing the end of the destructive cycle.  The worst case scenario is that I will end up disappointed and depressed, but I don't seem to be much better as of late, so what have I got to lose?

hope for now...

What can I say... I awoke in a mood.

This song has been speaking to me lately..

Hope for now...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU82rXsNNg0

This hallway's dark and empty
Just miles and miles of endless road
I've got a sickness pounding in my head
I'm at the mercy of the ghosts

But what it would take to live
As if I would not another day
To live without despair
And to be without desdain

How can I instill such hope
But be left with none of my own?
What if I could sing
Just one song
And it might save somebody's life

I sought after
After reasons to stay
I was lost
I was lost

Then the sky turned black
And the rains poured down
I was waiting
Waiting to be found
Oh, no

How can I instill such hope
But be left with none of my own?
What if I could sing
Just one song
And it might save somebody's life

Then I would sing
All that I can sing
Because that is when
When I feel that I'm not just counting time

Oh, and I sing
All that I can sing
Maybe just for the moment
Things would seem all right

random thoughts...

I swallow every single piece of gum that enters my mouth.  I'm not normally a gum chewer, but every now and again, I chomp.  I will take half the gum, eat it... then later eat the other half.  Somehow this amazes people.  I want to say:  It hasn't done much so far, and I've been swallowing gum my entire life.

dumb?  boring?  yes.  yes.

a follow up, of sorts.

I am experiencing a need to express that I do not regret what I experienced growing up.  It was my struggle, and it made me a loving, compassionate, non-judging person, generally speaking.  I consider myself to be lucky in the sense that I grew up in a very loving and supportive household.  I love my parents dearly, and more than that, I like them very much.  I am lucky to have parents and siblings who are so open... we are lucky in the sense that we share a common bond besides "the curse."  We enjoy each other.  When it comes to my family, and how I grew up, I couldn't have gotten luckier.

I think of my dad, the smartest man I know.  Wonderful memories he helped to create despite the chaos that ruled my life.  Little things....  Waking up to beautiful music being blasted through the house at an unreasonable hour the mornings before road trips.  Looking at different planets and stars through his telescope that he would set up in the front yard.  Watching him shave, watching him shine his shoes.  I loved those moments, still remember how the shoe polish smelled.  You want me to shine your shoes?  I'll do a damn fine job, after watching my dad so many times.  He made whistles from some sort of green wood when we went camping.  My dad can whistle 3 ways that I remember, through his teeth looking like he's smiling, (Kristin can too), with his fingers (this was the call any of the sibs recognized at dinner time, no matter where you were on our block, I can do this one, although not awesomely) and normally, through puckered lips.  When we were at Yellowstone, and he was sporting his Smokey the Bear hat (he always wanted to be a forest ranger) people would actually think he WAS a forest ranger, and he would tell them about history, where to go to see what... and whatever else.  My dad is sweet, caring, genuine, loving, intelligent, open.  Has always treated my mother like gold.  He has been a constant in my life, for better or for worse, he was there.  And still always is.

I don't mean to discount my mom, and I will write about her soon, but tonight my focus is on my dad.   He has opened up his own blog, telling his story of being diagnosed with ALS.  I figured I should be as open with him as he is with me.

Pardy, if you read this, I just want you to know how much I love you.  I often don't know how to say it or express it, but just know that I am honored to be your daughter.

how I remember it all going down.....

I've realized something... why I have little faith in myself.  I don't think I ever felt as though anyone ever had reason to have faith in me... truly.

I was a troubled little girl.  Problems began around age 3-4.  The general anxiety, separation anxiety, and subsequent panic that ensued.  Fight or flight truly took over, and I chose flight every time.  I still do.  I have been rescued my entire life.  Granted, there have been times that I waded through the mud on my own, but that wasn't until I was at least 18.  Up until that point, I could not rely on myself to simply deal.

I was:  terrified... always, it seemed.  If I saw a man on the way to school that I didn't know, rest assured, my sister could count on me running and screaming back home, fearing only the worst case scenarios.  If I was at school and became overwhelmed, I would break out into a panic and would not calm down until my mom came to take me home where I was always safe in her company.

Counseling started around age 8 and lasted a few years.  My counselor was Trudi Bach Whitehead.  She was Jewish and pretty.  She did help me find ways to calm the incessant fear I dealt with, slowly, but surely.  Proof, right there, that at least I could be fixed to some degree, yet not all the way.

I remember headaches/migraines starting around age 10.  I think it was my body's way of dealing with the still present anxiety and overwhelming stress.  I seem to remember random doctors and tests confirming that I didn't have a brain tumor or something.  I remember how freaked out I was of the MRI machine, and that knocking, my mother's hand on my sock covered foot, trying to soothe me.

The anxiety held steady, but then I started to experience depression around age 12.  I'm lucky enough that "the curse" runs strongly on both sides of the family.  Kleins and Taylors are a crazy bunch. I, myself, possibly the craziest.  The depression overtook me.  The anxiety and panic made it worse.  School was completely overwhelming, and I was often not in class, but rather in hall "freaking out" to put it mildly... bargaining with myself as to how much longer I could take it before I finally called my mom to pick me up and bring me home.  Junior high was not fun.

At this point in my life, I was convinced of my craziness, and the abnormality of it all.  I think I was back in counseling, definitely on medication, and felt fucked-up beyond repair.  As the depression steadily increased, my self-esteem plummeted.

I'm sure I had already begun, but I really REALLY started to loathe myself.  I remember obsessing over books such as "Six Months to Live" and praying to god to give me cancer and let me die.

I had never been delusional enough to consider myself "normal" and the self awareness cut deep.  I learned to accept that this was who I was:  the fucked up girl who could not handle her shit.  I was a mess the majority of the time.  I felt pressure coming from everywhere, and when I couldn't take it, and usually I couldn't, I would simply shut down.  It seemed most people, including myself, accepted this as simple fact.  I could not rely on myself.  I was not strong enough.

It was through my early teenage years that I saw Dr. Richard Ferre.  He prescribed my meds.  I don't remember if I was in counseling or not, but it doesn't stand out.  I remember very well being told, or hearing, or just knowing somehow that the doctor had "exhausted our options."  What to do now?  What was anyone supposed to do with me?

On the first day of 4th quarter in 10th grade, I walked into my class, driver's education, took a deep breath, turned around, and walked my ass to the office to call my mom.  She picked me up from Hillcrest for the last time.  My parents agreed that high school wasn't my bag.  I dropped out with their support.

I started a job not long after.  I was a busser at Francesco's.  My memories of this time in my life are hazy, which will be explained in a moment.  I had been working there for maybe a month, month and a half at the point that I essentially had a mental break at work, got picked up.  Went home.  I remember feeling desperate.  I remember needing to be able to feel SOMETHING other than the self loathing.  It was the second time I had ever done it.  I was not proud after, but rather embarrassed to show my dad the damage I had done to my arm.  I knew it looked bad.  I don't remember going to the hospital that night, but it happened.

After already one stint at Primary Children's, I landed myself at the University Neuropsychiatric Institute, which many lovingly refer to simply as UNI.  I was under the new care of Dr. Lowry Bushnell.  It was decided I should start ECT (aka electroconvulsive therapy aka shock).  I know the series of treatments started around my 16th birthday, but memories elude, thanks to the short term loss caused by ECT.  Somehow, I started "responding" to treatment.  At this point, I had grown so apathetic about my life, I just didn't care.  Sometimes I wonder if it "worked" because it made me forget, for a little while.  However, the whole situation led to me being under Dr. Bushnell's care, and I felt a true bond with this man.  In later years, he would treat many members of my family... siblings, parents, uncles....

I started back up at school in the middle of the year at Valley High, 11th grade.  I had been doing better, and Valley was a perfect fit for me.  I was not THE fucked up girl, I was one of many fuck-ups.  I still had breakdowns, but they seemed to occur less and less, much thanks to the Valium I was on.  I can actually say I enjoyed my experience at Valley.  I loved my teachers, especially Margaret.  I barely graduated, but, I did it.

I don't know what the point of all this is.  I got off track.

Oh yeah, faith in myself....  After so many years of viewing myself as so fucked up and a burden to all those I'm close to, I'm finally trying to change that image.  I have proved over and over to myself that I AM fucked up, so much that I'm probably so comfortable with that piece of identity, I'm struggling more than I ever thought I would to try to let it go.  It seems far off, but hopefully nearer than I realize.  I do have hope.  At least there's that.

08/18/12, 9:35pm

Lately (lies, always) I am very much caught up within my own thoughts... trying to decipher, dissect.  I want to understand.  It seems to have been a constant in my life...  attempting to break it all down.  Make sense of myself.

I am:  utterly self centered.  All too aware.  A friend said it best recently.  "I am a ME monster."

Yes, yes I am.

How can I expect to understand someone else if I don't quite comprehend what makes ME tick?  I like to think of it all as self exploration rather than a sick obsession.

Am I diluting myself?  Possibly.

loathesome

it's late, 12:09am, 08/17/12.

I'm supposed to be up at 4:40, per my alarm clock.  normally, at this time, I would have been fast asleep for at least a couple hours by now....  not tonight.  this past weekend was so draining... the depression:  so intrusive...  and in a way I had not experienced before.  talk about adding insult to injury.  at the very least, I have always been, well, not always, but I have generally known it so closely... able to recognize the signs from miles away.  not this time.  the management of ADD, subsequent and preexisting anxiety, and panic have become startlingly stable.  I am more even keeled than I have ever been in my entire life...  yet I found myself pushed up against the gritty brick wall of reality.  I have been:  miserable.  (unbeknownst to me)  it snuck up on me this time, hit me where it hurt.

I don't understand:  the innate feeling of being burdensome.

it overwhelms... granted, it doesn't take much.  I believe myself to be one of the "hyper-sensitive".  truly.  it is all overload for me.  I was predisposed to handle only so much, and I may have reached that threshold prematurely....  I honestly thought I had a few good years in me, but perhaps I have reached my limit.

I have admitted:  I have low expectations.  I consider myself to be gentle, even, and maybe especially inwardly.... but do I deserve such a break?  As an adult, I have tended to exceed expectations.  it is fulfilling, and often unexpected.  sadly, I let myself down this past go-round.  I know my confidence is low... despite low expectations, I have always proven to be a force to be reckon with.  I am fast, but not fast enough.  I am accurate, but I am not a perfectionist.  I expect the most and simultaneously loathe myself for placing any expectations at all.  I am all too willing to take the blame.  I am: responsible, somehow.

I am afraid I will always want, always yearn... for what I am unable to attain.  peace.  I don't know if I can possibly allow it.  am I deserving?  well, sometimes I think so... but most of the time... this head gets in the way.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh............. release.

it's been far too long.

heathen's kiss - horsefeathers.

Lyin' on the floor and through your teeth.
Tell me where you've gone, speak softly.
Crawlin' from the dark up to your feet.
Tell me where you've gone, speak gently.

Crawlin' from the dark up to your feet.
Tell me where you've gone, speak softly.
Tell me where you've gone, and what you've done.
A fever keeps on comin', I want none.

Are you true to me?
Are these vows we say profane?
Are you true to me?
Are these vows we make obscene?

Heathens kiss softly.
From their mouthes there's nothing.
They cruelly come gently.
With violent lips smashing.

Heathens kiss softly.

thumbsucker.

sometimes I wish more than anything that when overwhelmed I could just rely on my right thumb, nestled snuggly in my mouth....  I could suck away the anxiety... rub my blankie with my left hand, hold it close to my nose, inhale...  that sickly but sweet smell that is mine, and mine only.

unfortunately, doesn't work that way.  more than once or twice....I want to say out of curiousity, but recognize feeling desperate more than anything... I have slipped this thumb between my lips, sucked, hoping for the old soothing sensation to blanket me.

it doesn't feel the same.  foreign, which used to feel like home.  I shudder, knowing that I let embarrassment rule and self loathing control what used to always be there for me.  my natural coping ability, even if I had to wait to get home, that thumb saved me.

eff adulthood.

08/09/12

grasping....for understanding....some semblence of peace.  my head is aching, my insides imploding... this noggin... is so heavy right now, can barely balance on this neck... adult onset torticollis?  chronic crooked neck?  chronically crooked?  nobody knows.  I need to write, express, release, but it's just not coming.... and I hate forcing anything....  walking backwards, eyes closed, head down, shaking slowly from side to side....  the heart says one thing, and the head screams another.  loyalties fading, I'm turning on myself.  know this cycle too well.

I am:  making it worse
I am:  seriously trying, really trying.  it's exhausting
I am:  trying to turn it off...mindfullness and such
I am:  failing miserably
