I was thinking last week that it was almost time to put on my emotional armor so that I wouldn't be taken by surprise this time, but PMS is a crafty foe who kicks my butt even when I think I'm prepared.
All day today I felt very aware of my gut region and actually wondered (ala Amy M.) if perhaps I was filled with colon cancer and only had weeks to live. I actually pictured my funeral and wondered who would show up for it (what with the hassle of the holidays and all). Then I thought I was being silly and should just eat some shredded wheat or something as a peace offering to my intestines (I ate a banana instead).

It wasn't until Whitney and I dropped Landon and the neighbor kid off at scouts and headed to the post office that I realized what an irrational state of mind I was in. This is MY post office, what were all of these people doing there!! I drove through the parking lot, muttered some choice words under my breath and headed for Target instead.

Target wasn't much better except that the lines weren't as long and there was a ton of stuff to catch my eye. My main purpose for going there was to replenish my Suave Sweet Pea Shower Gel. Why did I need to do that today? I have no idea except that I am totally out of it and really wanted some more. Of course, I ended up buying 4 packages of razors (they were on sale), which reminded me that I've also been shaving for 24 years ($%#@) and am moving laser hair removal to the top of my Christmas wish list.
But I digress. Usually Target acts as a haven to me. It's aesthetically pleasing, full of great deals, has an excellent stationery aisle, and never disappoints me. But the combo of wicked PMS and after-school Christmas shoppers was more than I could handle. It was a jungle in there (in a Walmartesque kind of way) full of crying kids, employees restocking shelves to the detriment of the customers, and Whitney campaigning for every stupid toy known to man (a fabric dinosaur with spikey hair for real?).

It reminded me that the reason kids act up in stores is because they're trying to convey the message to their very dense parents that they don't want to be there. So why do we insist on bringing them? All stores should be open 24 hours so that we can shop without kids! I rarely have my kids with me in a store, but even this short outing with Whitney made me crazy. She wasn't particularly obnoxious, it's just that my defenses were out of whack and my tolerance for her requests and enthusiasm was low. Not good.
We fled Target ($95 later) and went back to the post office. The parking lot was considerably less full so we went in...big mistake. I took one look at the line inside (12 people deep) and the automated machine line (4 people deep) and turned around. Whitney cheered. Aargh!
We had 15 minutes to fill before picking Landon and the neighbor kid up from scouts so I thought a quick trip to Robert's (the craft store) was in order. They have a 50% off coupon today and I wanted to scope out their holiday home decor and replenish my white cardstock inventory. We pulled into the parking lot only to drive through it and leave again (what was I thinking going there?) it was too crazy to subject myself to today. Whitney was elated.
I opted to drive thru Taco Time (which I NEVER do) to get a cream-filled churro. What a random stop for me, but I felt the need for a treat immediately and saw the sign. Four dollars and 16 cents later I had a cream-filled churro in hand, plus 2 regular churros for the kids. This treat along with 2 Midols and some time outside putting up Christmas decorations and I'm feeling so much better.
I even toyed around with the notion of going to get our Christmas tree tonight, but in a rare moment of clarity reminded myself that I don't feel well and most likely would let that influence our evening. Baby steps people, baby steps.
P.S. It's so therapeutic to be able to write about this, even if no one reads it. I love blogging.

*How goes your battle? im a cranky mess (people breathing BUG ME) when its the few days before..kinda funny..i usually begin the 1st of the month..and since oct was a long month..i started TWICE in october..i was SOOO mad..lame huH!! makes me laugh now..im gearing up for aunt flow as we speak..thanks for the heads up on that!
Do you ever opt out of a store because
the parking lot is too full? totally..although today the gym was PACKED at 1030am..WHAT was everyone doing there..i was mad..but went in to do my workout..
Do you take Midol? it does nothing for me..
Have you ever posed with a churro before?nope..but seriously it has cream filling in it?!?! ive never even heard of that!!
Are you sick to death of shaving?YES!! and i have dark hair so it HAS to get done..ugh..i used all my razors you gave me and busted out the big bucks for one that "lasts longer"..i think its the same..i have to keep switching out the blades...frustrating..
Sorry you are PMSed to the max!! Being a woman is really hard isn't it? I was reminded last month just how bad cramps can be. I'm hoping this month isn't as bad.
I am sick of shaving too. So in the winter, I shave once, maybe twice a week. I am with you on the laser hair removal. I would totally do it if I could afford it!
I hope tomorrow is a better day!
oihhhh missy jorvik was standing next to me, and said JILL MAMA JILL with his little cute accent...then he said 'i want this....and I pinpointed with the cursor on the churro and sure enough it was what he wanted....' go figure. I am sorry you have to deal with this....I haven't had cramps since they boys were born...really...but I think I will be fighting hot flashes more so than anything....maybe I am just contemplating....you are absurd with your thoughts on the C subject...but if it is any consolation I would probably be there taking a self portrait with toi! well........there were soo many questions I forgot. No I never hardly opt out of anything really because of long lines....and razor...finally did...I can go without shaving...for a while....however, I am all excited about getting a pedicure so I decided to shave before I go...so the ladies don't freak out.
I don't relate much to the PMS issues but I will be extremely jealous if you get laser hair removal... I have been scheming for years but it just keeps looking further and further away.
I have never had midol, but I have seen the commercials.
Sometimes I opt out of a full parking lot but most of the time my things still need to get done.
We turned tail and drove in the opposite direction from the Hobby Lobby parking lot Saturday. I don't know what I was thinking anyway since HL has notoriously slow and therefore long lines. Based on the lot I would probably STILL be there.
I do get PMSed (a cranky pants) out and Midol doesn't really help.
Never had a churro, cream filled or otherwise--looks tasty though.
Glad the outdoor decorating helped a bit.
I just had to laugh about your post today. I don't really have PMS as much as killer cramps. I have two days of severe discomfort every month.
I have never left a store a store because of a crowd (but I have foreseen the crowds and not gone there in the first place). Once I make the effort to get to a store, I will stick it out at all costs. I stood in line for an hour at Trader Joe's last week.
I HATE shaving-- especially the armpits. You can always tell when I haven't shaved by when I wear pants every day, and a long skirt on Sunday. I have now gone for 11 days without shaving (I'll bet y'all didn't want to know that).
Oh, I remember the days when I was allowed to PMS, but unfortunately, those days are over. With four daughters, three of which having hit the "woman" stage, there is no room for me to have PMS. It's just the way it is. Teenage hormones trump the old woman hormones. I'm hoping that menopause will come for me soon. My mother hit menopause at 43, so early. I'm hoping for it, even if it means hormone replacement. I would love to have all the mess over with.
Have I ever not gone shopping because of a crowded parking lot? No. I always go anyway because usually I really have to have what I'm going there for. Bummer.
I'm excited for some snow. I know, how crazy that I want cloudy, cold days. It's the Christmas wish, to have snow in December.
I hope you are feeling back to your normal self tomorrow!
Oh Jill I am so sorry. I don't usually have to deal with PMS and I am just now realising how LUCKY I am. I can't imagine what you have to go through on a monthly basis and I feel just awful for you. I have secretly (I don't usually share this information because the few times I have I have gotten looks like I am crazy) always liked getting my period...it is my sign that I am healthy and can have babies and makes me feel happy that I am a woman (like I said I know this makes me sound CRAZY...but without the PMS it isn't so bad). I don't think the women in my family get PMS so I didn't realise how HORRIBLE it could be be until I was older and had friends that suffer the way you do.
I love that in the Red Tent the women all gather together and spend 4 days just relaxing and "being women" together. I think our bodies still need that down time and companionship of other women. I hope you just take it easy and REST!!
OK...now on to that CHURRO WITH CREAM...that is about my most favorite treat in the WORLD and sadly we do not have Taco Time in California. I have tried to get Brandon to look into opening a franchise here...just because I love those churros!! Ask Amie...I make her take me there everyday when I visit Utah!!
How goes your battle? oh I always know when is coming, but usually feel like I can beat it.. I usually end up in tears over some dumb thing!
Do you ever opt out of a store because
the parking lot is too full?
YES!!!
Do you take Midol? never have.. does it help?
Have you ever posed with a churro before? no,but I love costco's.. it is hard for me to leave there without one!
Are you sick to death of shaving?
Yep.. I shave every other day.. I can't stand prickly legss.. I guess my hair grows fast! UGH!
sorry about the bummer day.. it was a bit fun to read.. not to enjoy your misery.. but you have such a fun way of writing.. I love to read it! hope the Post office is empty tommorrow!
I have had days like that where I keep driving out of every parking lot and wonder why I even left the house. Especially with my hormonal prego state.
Are you excited for October Road to start back up tonight? I will be watching it tomorrow on the internet for sure.
Oh, Jill. Your first two paragraphs articulated EXACTLY how I feel -- every three weeks, to boot. I feel blindsided every. single. time. Even when I think I am on top of it. Sheesh!
I've never taken Midol. Is it better than Advil? I don't shave all that often. (Frighteningly so. Like, before I go swimming and sometimes on Sundays...) But I will hope for laser hair removal with you!
would it make you feel any better to know that you are an INCREDIBLE writer!!! oh my jill how do you do it. will you write my life story.
hey i would have gone to your funeral and i would make cute handouts for everyone with an envelope and a stamp telling them all your good mail movement and encourage to go home that day and write a letter to someone that they should have done years ago!
i really don't have pms - and never have taken midol. i figure because most of my days are spent with total aches and pains from other problems it is my one reward to not have pms - i will trade you once a month for every other day..
can't wait to catch up on your blog, i have really missed it.
Man I can relate to this post today.
Although I drove through the drive threw at Krispy Kreme and ate two donuts then spent the rest of the night feeling sick about it.
I hate pms- I really hate hot flashes which my GYN told me I am really having they are not in my mind-& yes I am too young! Who knew symtems can begin 7-10 years before menapause (which is sounding really good about now).
I actually begged my doctor to rid me of periods, but she gave me this whole lecture & lists of things I need to try first which I refuse to do. Being on the pill for me is like having pms everyday of the month. Really BAD.
Sorry you are in this state of being. I hope tomorrow is better.
I feel just like this, only in an 8 month pregnant state! I am so unstable and cranky, what to do? I handle it ok most months but the day or two before, watch out. I could cry or yell and you'll never know which until it happens. So pretty much it can be a gamble to spend time around me during that time!
I will usually get out of the car, thinking the parking lot is not a true sign. But once I see the lines you saw, I will turn and head the other way!
I LOVE those churros! I'm pretty sure they helped me gain the freshman 15 (or was it 20?) when I was at Ricks. I lived right across the street and we would eat them ALL the time! I haven't had one in years, thanks for the new craving!
(in Homer Simpson voice): "Cream-filled churro....ummmmm...."
Why have I never heard of this delectable treat?!
The pms battle rages within like a fiery inferno, THAT'S how goes my battle! And I'm a 21-day cycler. Nice.
I won't mention where I'm sick to death of shaving. It's an unmentionable area. I'm sure you get the picture.
I am right there with you for PMS- it sucks!!! I forget about Midol, I will have to put it on the to get list.
Shaving- I would love to live in the 60's! No shaving or bras!
Churros- Love those, don't get them much and have never had a cream filled one, sounds good. If only they had Taco Time out east.
Really, does Midol help? You need to tell us more about that.
Your questions today cracked me up! "Have you ever posed with a churro?" ha! No, can't say that I have.
Sorry you aren't feeling well. I opt out of crowded places even when I'm feeling great. It has to be extremely necessary to make it worth it for me. This time of year, I try to limit my public outings as much as possible, but sometimes you just have to brave it. Ugh!
I feel for you. I went through the same thing last week. Maybe I was the cranky one shopping on black friday?
Oh, crap. I just saw your last post and I haven't emailed anything to Kristi! Crappy. I am so late.
Glad you liked the mat.
i read every bit of it, laughing and empathizing!
i don't think i've ever had a churro, nonetheless a cream-filled one...
With Dave gone, I am stuck shopping with the kids. I idiotically went to Robert's last night. I needed a few things to finish my Pink Christmas gift. Of course it was packed. They were out of the things I really needed. Then I had to stand in huge lines to get those things I didn't need. My kids were actually quite good but they are still kids. I was going to run more errands after that but I opted to get a pizza and go home instead. Smart move.
I am blindsided by PMS every time too. I get seriously all weepy and think my life is falling apart. A few days later, I get a clue.
I feel your pain! I was just expressing to Doug about laser hair removal he thinks I am psycho and wondered why I wanted that at the top of my list? Hello? Shaving sucks.
Unfortunately Midol is like taking placebo for me I take Naproxin for relief.
I actually have left a parking lot due to crowds--very irritating. I hope you have a better day today :)
22 comments already. LOL, LOL, LOL. I am the old lady in this bunch so I can look back on all the things you talk about. ALL OF IT, YUK. That time for me was awful, I was cranky (read mean), I felt bad, I became anemic every month and had migraine headaches. No, life with me was not pleasant once a month, but I was so much fun inbetween.
Something to look forward to--menopause and less hair on your legs and underarms.
Man this post is great. I don't have a very difficult battle and only get mildly moody for a day or two. I have never taken Midol and hate shaving, but don't shave very often this time of year.
I usually brave the stores even when I can tell it will be packed. Linc does not.
I have never had a Churro. I always think to try one but never remember when I want something. They look so good.
I love your opening paragraph.
I know your pain, although I don't often get cramps. There are other symptoms and I never seem to know it's coming until it strikes.
Just the other day I was thinking that I really need to move laser hair removal higher up on the priority list.
this story made me laugh and cry - all at the same time! (by the way- the way the light hits your face in the churro picture makes it look like you were crying! it made me so sad, i had to check!)
my battle is fought with mucho ammunition in the form of midol, as much motrin as i can get my hands on and chocolate- baking seems to soothe my hormones. :) the one thing i really loved about pregnancy was not having pms - i was elated to be up with heartburn b/c i realized the alternative was not much fun.
i've ridden on a bus with churros, but never posed with one- every time i hear the word "churro" i picture this little kid on a bus in mexico yelling in this shrill little voice "churrrrrrros! churrrrrrrrrritos!" with the rs just rolling along.
Yes, I have posed with a churro, actually on more than one occasion. That is our standard Disneyland treat. John would love a creme filled. Who knew? There's something about that kind of treat that instantly eases a miserable day.
I agree - shopping with kids was not meant to be. It's a form of torture.
laser hair removal has been the top of my wish list for a year! what a waste of time to shave and yet, how grubby I feel when I don't. Sometimes I wonder if I could have been German, but end of doubting it.
Hope your churro boost lasts! (I have never heard of a cream filled one and am seriously entertaining the idea of driving to Taco Bell right now!)
Oh my heavens, Jill. Here I have been attempting to catch up on my own blog knowing this...this proliferation of life from other bloggers has been happening, and all I can say is...I've read it. Even if I've been missing in action on the comment board. I'm so glad you had such a great time in California. I've been debating about the perfect time to take kids but your trip seems close to it.
Luckily, you were able to enjoy Thanksgiving before you were blindsided. I rarely get the full blown PMS but am plenty moody enough without it. I hope you find relief soon in a way that doesn't involve churros (unless they truly make you happy:))
I did not know that there were filled churros. Oh my. As for the whole *blindsided*, I've been pretty blessed with no monthly angst in my life...until I got a dang IUD in. Then I came to dread one week of the month entirely (and I think my husband did, too!). The prices we pay...
OK, Jill--I really think you must be the best blogger I have ever found! Your post made me laugh so much...and at the same time it made me think about what amazing people we women really are!
I feel like I am ALWAYS moody, and I hate periods. I always feel like an awkward, icky, self-conscious teenager! Here's looking forward to hot flashes--lol!
PMS...ME TOO right now! Although I am a little relieved to have it, I was calculating how far apart my babies would be if I were pregnant again 15 MONTHS!! Yikes!
I am behind with Pink Christmas too..haven't sent in my picture yet.
oh i am sick of shaving and pms and think really, i have had enough! :)
oh the shopping woes. *MY* target has been so nutty. and heck yes i keep driving if a parking lot is too full anywhere. well, any where but starbucks! I will wait there.
I thought I'd already commented on this post...*confused*...I often think that, though. I make phantom comments in my head, and then realise that I never wrote them.
These are fabby comments. What an array of levels of insanity!
With me and two daughters, my husband has already expressed concern that in future years he may have to face the onslaught of synchronized cycles. It happened to me and my sister when we were young.
Yes, I flounce out of places in a huff like no-one's got any right to be there. Hahaha!
during the middle of the day today i was doubled over in pain due to cramps! i hadn't felt this way since HIGH SCHOOL, literally. my poor students fell victim to my terrible mood. it was wretched!
I hate feeling this way and the funny thing is I too try to prepare myself, but for some reason it never helps. I find pms utterly unfair.
Got a good laugh out of the amy m comment even thought i haven't had cancer in months...have you notice? Aren't you proud? I do find it funny that you came to that conclusion though. Now you know how I have been feeling the last several years of my life.
