Storm Large: Lilith Fair?

6' tall, Storm Large was turned down for Lilith Fair's return in 2010 because she wasn't "womanly enough" and 8 Miles Wide was her response. It's about time talent came before "cute" when it comes to women in music. The average female is a size 14, not a size 4 anyway. I can't wait to hear more originals from Storm.

And the low budget, campy B movie thriller soundtrack, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things from 1972 - is complete with music and dialogue. The soundtrack is enough to follow the story without the actual movie but then you'd miss the over acting. What this movie lacks in production, it makes up for with creativity and great one liners. Along Came A Spider is a concept album telling the story of a serial killer and some songs are exceptionally creepy. Just as Stephen King has an unnatural insight into people's worst fears - so does Alice Cooper. The album hangs together best as it was produced, as a story, then every track falls into place.

I discovered Monster Magnet through one of my favorite Halloween songs, Space Lord. At first listen, they were not my usual taste. But that's why trying new stuff really pays off. The musicianship is excellent, the lyrics are complex and full of subtle irony. Perfect, and just when I make up my mind about them, they do something unexpected. Besides, I needed the song, Dead Christmas on my playlist soon.

Pepper's Ghost: Arena (2005)

Pepper's Ghost is an illusory effect used by theaters, magicians and haunted houses to create morphing or ghostly images and serves as the theme behind the seven tales on Arena's 6th album by the same name. The album was inspired by elements from Marvel comics and comes with a comic book by the same artist that did the cover. This is a departure for Arena by being not quite neo progressive, nor is it fully progressive metal either, but lands somewhere in the middle with more rock beats and a surprise - a medieval folk sound. Arena is still guitar and keyboard heavy with lush lyrics that I find worth listening to. And I've been doing that a lot to Pepper's Ghost lately. Enjoy!

A Real Halloween

If you think Halloween is all about cute little black kitties, funny pumpkins, silly costumes and Disney, then this site probably isn't for you. Although it's not a big site, Occult Rock Blog has posted well-thought out and interesting selections - which just as the name implies, focuses on the occult (satanism, rituals, witchcraft, magic). Isn't that a lot of what Halloween's about? The site includes older bands (1969), as well as current ones. Just reading some of the descriptions sent chills down my spine (black mass anyone?), i.e. a REAL scary Halloween.

One I liked is Electric Hellfire Club.
