My Best Friend died today 7 years ago. It to date has been the hardest thing I have had to deal with. Anyone who knew her loved her. I often reflect on the day I saw her last which was this day. I don’t tell her story often but I will share it today. Lydia and I had lunch atleast once a week on a regular basis. We had planned on a monday to eat lunch on the friday she passed but I had had to cancel earlier in the week because I had a dr’s appointment. Well that friday morning my boss came to me and told me that I had some over time so I could either take a long lunch or leave early. I called Lydia and told her to meet me for lunch since I had some extra time.
We ate Mexican that day. We laughed and had our normal conversation but something struck me as we sat there. She kept mentioning that she had this feeling something was going to happen. She mentioned that her parent’s were scheduled to leave the next morning for Cancun so she was going to leave me after lunch to go see them before they left. She kept thinking she wouldn’t get a chance to say good bye. I of course told her that they would be fine and that nothing was going to happen. Little did I know that this would be the last time I ever saw her or heard her voice again.
She did go see her parent’s that afternoon, got to say goodbye! She even called her sister the night before who went to school in Clemson just to say hi since it had been awhile. After she left her parent’s house, she ran a red light and was in a fatal car accident. Her seat belt failed on her! I didn’t get the call until the next morning from my Dad. I still play his words in my head over and over again…”Jamie…Lydia was killed in a car accident last night!” I couldn’t breathe..I literally felt like someone had kicked me so hard that I fell to the ground! I screamed I know this much…and had my roommate drive me to his house then to Lydia’s parent’s house.
Yes today has been a sad one for me…even after 7 years. It never gets easier! I never go a day without thinking of her…I even see her in my dreams. The only thing I do know and will never quite understand is that it was her time to go! She knew it without actually knowing it. She had that feeling but just couldn’t put her finger on it. I also know that my Heavenly Father blessed me immensely for allowing me to see her one last time! If I would have known, I would have hugged her a little longer and a little tighter! He also protected me from seeing her accident because it happened on my normal route home that I took everyday but instead I went home a complete opposite way that day or I would have seen it.
I used to worry that I would forget what she looked like or forget the sound of her voice but I see her and hear her every single day! She is still with me! It may be awhile but I can’t wait for the day where I get to see her smiling face again!
Lydia…I love you and miss you more than you know!!!
