Saturday Ramblings

I want one of each!
_____
This is beautiful news, given that Illinois is another state that's dead guilty of not getting ballots into the hands of military members serving overseas on time:
A Maryland federal court ruled today that it is a violation of a soldier’s constitutional rights to not receive his complete ballot on time. The court ruled that the John Doe officer stationed in Iraq had standing to sue based on deprivations of their constitutional rights.Booyah!
This is an enormously important decision which will affect the 2012 elections.
This means that military members need not wait on the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., at the Justice Department to sue. It may end the monopoly on DOJ’s oversight of military voting, which is a good thing for everyone in uniform. It means that in 2012, during the presidential election, we won’t have to wait for the DOJ to act. It means that the Eric Holder military voting disaster of 2010 might not happen again.
You are an Anti-government Gunslinger, also known as a libertarian conservative. You believe in smaller government, states’ rights, gun rights, and that, as Reagan once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

You're not in the lowest bracket of non-hippie-hood, but you're close. I advise a field trip to a food co-op or a farmer's market. Do a few interviews and take notes, because there will be a quiz next week to see if you've learned anything.
Are you a hippie?

For once, a newspaper takes a sensible position:
This week, U.S. District Judge James Zagel settled the latest debate over jury privacy by deciding to withhold the names of jurors in the trial of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich and his brother Robert until the trial was over.Huzzah, sirs!
It is in the very marrow of the bones of a news organization to defend the free flow of public information, so it feels unnatural to say this, but we think Zagel got it right.

I had one of those weird convergences of thought where Amy Alkon popped up twice -- once with her sending my thoughts bouncing thither, and once with another post sending me bouncing back yon. You see, she wrote a post about an email a professor sent to a particularly irksome student, which led me to thinking about Crankylitprof , who regularly applies the cluebat with righteous weal, and just how much she'd have approved that post. Later, I found this series of delightfully passive-agressive pokes at cell phone users that I was sure would get Amy's approval. One of these days soon, after I whittle down the current load of reading materials on my nightstand and in my Kindle, I'm going to have to order her book.

Three Blogthings for Valentine's Day:
You Have a Serious Heart |
![]() You believe that love is not a mystery. Love is respect, nurturing, and affection. Love is not drama. You love with your head before you love with your heart. It's not love if it doesn't make sense. Your heart is not easily tricked or fooled. You only have feelings when it is the real thing. Your love life is only a part of your whole life. Love has its place, but you don't obsess over it. |
Your Love Quote is Cynical |
![]() Love is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. |

As soon as the doors shut at the stop before yours, stand up and take your pants off and put them in your backpack. If you’d like to use a briefcase, purse, grocery bag, or whatever instead of a backpack that’s fine too. If anyone asks you why you’ve removed your pants, tell them that they were “getting uncomfortable” (or something along those lines.)
Exit the train at your assigned stop and stand on the platform, pantless. You will wait on the platform for the next train to arrive. Stay in the exact same place on the platform so you enter the next train in the same car as you exited the last train.
When you enter, act as you normally would. You do not know any of the other pantless riders. If questioned, tell folks that you “forgot to wear pants” and yes you are “a little cold.” Insist that it is a coincidence that others also forgot their pants. Be nice and friendly and normal.
You can wear fun underwear if you like, but nothing that screams out, “I wore this because I’m doing a silly stunt.” Wear two pairs of underwear if it makes you feel more comfortable. Don’t wear a thong or anything else that might offend people. Our aim is to make people laugh, not piss them off.
