Halloween

Halloween was lots of fun this year. Drew was Harry Potter, Sydney was Tinkerbell, and Matt was a fireman. They were all happy with their costumes. This year, our traditional photo on the front steps picture did not come out so well. We were a little behind on getting outside and everyone was anxious for the big event-- trick or treating.

We had a Halloween party at our house surrounding the trick or treating with Steve and Wendy, Tom and Sarah's family, Aaron and Natalie Moon and kids, and my parents. Here was my creative endeavor in the kitchen... spider pizza (out of olives) which was a hit with the kids. Andy also made some root beer, and the dry ice was especially spooky for Halloween. I didn't take many photos of the festivities, but it was a good time.

Sydney models the tinkerbell costume. This was a team effort with a friend of mine (Emily) who has a masters degree in costumes and works at U. of MD theatre department. We had a fun night putting this together while watching Tinkerbell a few days before Halloween. I made the wings the day before the church party.

Harry casts a spell. His favorite part was that I sprayed his hair black, but I didn't do it too much because I didn't have complete confidence in the washability claims. It came off fine in the shower though, so next time I will really go wild. Trick or treating produced a big haul for all of the kids. Each kid had a few pounds of candy, with a few full size bars. Drew even had a special envelope that said "To Drew the big helper" on it from an older woman down the street. He and a friend helped her rake and bag up some leaves a few days earlier. In the envelope was a 2 dollar bill.

Afterwards, the kids poured out their candy on the floor and everyone ate until they couldn't fit anymore while we watched semi-scary Halloween cartoons like Disney's headless horseman.

A few nights before Halloween, we had our ward party. Here is Sydney with one of her best friends Superman (Auden). If you ever want to make fairy wings for your daughter, use a heavier wire like a hanger, or her excitement and jumping around will bend them. We learned this from experience, but at least they bend back.

The 3 Harry's.... Sam, Drew and Calder.

Andy and his little fireman.

Funny-faced fairy. She was delighted to get these in her trick or treat bag so that she can trick people.

I was surprised when Matt won the baby prize in the costume competition. After spending hours creating wings for Sydney and doing some minor sewing and such for Drew's costume, it was funny that the hand me down store bought costume was a winner. He enjoyed the M&Ms that he won, and really so did I.

Pumpkin Farm

In keeping with the tradition that we have had on most of the Octobers since we have been back in Maryland, we headed to the pumpkin farm on the weekend before Halloween. It's a nice way to start the Halloween festivities, and usually the leaves around here are at their peak right then too, so we enjoyed the scenic ride up there.

We took a hayride behind a tractor. It drives around a small lake, through a creek, into the woods where they have little characters hidden (like Harry Potter and friends, Winnie the Pooh, etc.), and by the pumpkin patch.

We played in the straw maze, and successfully found our way back out. This was an instance where my being tall came in handy. It was great fun for Drew and Sydney.

Matt's favorite part was sitting on this tractor. He played on it for about 15 minutes while Andy went through the maze with Drew and Sydney, but he was still angry when it was time to get off.

We had to take a picture on the big pumpkins.
