Bad Science

The United States now has more guns than people, according to estimates published last year in the Washington Post. But even before that disconcerting nugget of information entered the public realm, the U.S. still housed a rather obscene amount of firearms

Disconcerting?  Obscene?

Yeah...  it seems like you want to ban guns.


"Here's what we do know. After peaking in the 1980s and early 1990s, crime has plummeted in the United States. The rates of forcible rape, murder, violent crime, property crime, and aggravated assault are currently as low as they were in the 1960s."

So.... more guns don't cause more crime?  Any expanding on how that undercuts the core reasoning behind gun control?   None?

Ah, gonna focus on the mass shootings?  Right.

Lankford then explored how the number of mass shootings per country were associated with each country's homicide rate, suicide rate (used a rough proxy for mental health), and firearm ownership rate. While he found no link between the number of shootings and suicide or homicide rates, he found a highly significant (p<.01) link between the number of shootings and firearm ownership rates. 
Apparently, yes,  there's no link on homicide and gun rate but there is on the subset of homicides.

Oh-kay.  No pondering why that's happening?


Lankford noted a number of limitations to his study. Older incidents occurring further in the past and in countries without streamlined reporting systems may have been missed. Moreover, since public mass shootings are rare, the sample size is small for the forty-six-year study period.

So, a small sample size,  combined with bad reporting.    You know,  when you have a correlation that seems anomalous and is in part due to a small sample size,  there might be something off with that correlation.


But why let that get in the way when there's obsecene and disconcerting guns to ban!


Lankford also made clear that he utilized the definition of public mass shooting from the NYPD's report. The attacks "must have (a) involved a firearm, (b) appeared to have struck random strangers or bystanders and not only specific targets, and (c) not occurred solely in domestic settings or have been primarily gang-related, drive-by shootings, hostage-taking incidents, or robberies."

Which means despite the breathless writing earlier in the article San Bernadino wouldn't count.


He did however, state the natural conclusion from his findings.
"Perhaps the most obvious step the United States could take to reduce public mass shootings may also be the most politically challenging: reduce firearms availability."
Lankford noted that the approach seemed to work in Australia. After a public mass shooting in 1996 that left thirty-five people dead, the country's government passed comprehensive gun control legislation. 

Wait... so overall gun deaths's aren't correlated... but the natural conclusion is gun control?
Color me surprised.

But nobody wants to ban guns.  Do note they don't even say that Australia had mass bans and confiscations.

I also wonder which other rights and possessions these folks think should be banned because a correlation was found.  Is that how science works now?

"Hey we found a correlation between autism and visits to the doctor!  Let's   ban doctors!"

A blast from the Atomic and Jet Age past!

Boeing just patented a... novel engine idea.

Basically use lasers to generate micro fusion reactions.

This generates thrust out the back.  And on the front the high energy neutrons excite a uranium coating a thrust plate.  Said plate then heats up coolant which is run through turbines... which power the lasers.

Erm....

So it's kind of like a lighter version of the Direct Air Cycle design for the old Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion program.

Well. This is probably a less *dirty* design. But my guess it it'll give more radiation release than the Indirect Air cycle design.

Oh...  and the ANP  programs were at least workable.  The whole,  laser fusion thing...  I don't think there's an idea on a way to have the system be able to keep itself powered with the given fuel.

Science? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it does.

Brad Allenby and Daniel Sarewitz of Slate have a doozey of magical thinking and cargo cult thinking.  Seriously this is an article entitled "What The Wizard of Oz TellsUs About Climate Change"


Buckle up folks.


Because their idea of "Climate Denial" is about to get... weird.

The essence of the Anthropocene is not really about humanity’s planetary-scale impact, but about the beginnings of a radical destabilization of the core human ideas and institutions that made this impact possible.
...
No better example of the existence and consequences of this collective denial can be found than the ongoing debate over climate change, in which public discourse has plunged to levels of name-calling and character assassination that would humble a nursery school class.
...
At the core of this debate is an idea that has been central to the development of our identity as humans for the past 400 years: that the key to solving the problem is rational action dictated by scientific knowledge.
Give it up, folks.

That's right,  they come off the bat telling you to give up the idea that "rational action dictated by scientific knowledge" is key to solving problems.

Let's read on"

First: Science ain’t what it used to be. Our ideal of science is of a highly structured activity for establishing cause-and-effect relationships that can be tested in the field and the laboratory. Now the focus is increasingly on computational models and scenarios aimed at exploring complex phenomena (such as climate change) that unfold on scales from the global to the molecular.

Erm...   are the writers even aware that eventually molecular scientists have to actually, you know,  built those molecules...  and test them.

That there's still... laboratory work.  I mean the whole point of the computer models is to guide the actual real world application.  Otherwise it's just a video game.

Oh but it continues:

The process of observation, hypothesis development, and testing has come to seem like the embodiment of rationality itself. At the core of this first phase of scientific culture was reductionism—understanding things by studying their component parts—controlled experimentation, and confirmation and replication of results. If I didn’t believe your story that fish died in water with high lead content, I could repeat the experiment, changing nothing but the lead concentration in the water. Despite how complex the water and fish physiology and my conditions were, I could change that one variable, and over time achieve a clear pattern of increasing lead, increasing mortality.

Yup... basic science there.  The whole, let's acutally test what you're saying instead of taking it on faith.

But wait!  They claim there's a New Science!

But this method works only for simple, controlled, and closed systems, in which pulling out one variable to experiment with is possible. It does not apply to complex adaptive systems, in which the very process of separating out a single variable changes the underlying system unpredictably. Such systems cannot be replicated, and therefore cannot be subject to standard scientific processes of confirmation. No one can replicate global environmental conditions in such a way as to experimentally test climate change. For such complex systems, the best we can do is create complicated computer models.

No...  the best you can do is run repeated and careful trials, attempting to untangle things as best you can.   And then you create a computer model, and then you actually test it.

And you know who else says their  ideas "cannot be subject standard scientific processes of confirmation"  con artists hawking  perpetuate motion machines and ESP.

But creating a model necessarily involves generating a set of rules that determines what we include in the model and what we exclude. And any set of rules that enables us to model a complex system that is coherent necessarily gives us a model that is partial and arbitrary—hence the common refrain that “all models are wrong, but some are useful.” We can use the model to generate multiple scenarios of the future that are consistent with scientific understanding, but we cannot have the underlying system itself. The complexity of the Anthropocene—in which, for example, climate change is an emergent phenomenon of 300 years of industrialism—is not subject to the sort of verifiable and predictive understanding that characterized science of the sort that Copernicus, Newton, or even Einstein practiced.

Uh...  if your model cannot be verified in the traditional way then how exactly do you know how useful it is?  That is the entire point of verification, to see if the model can accuratly predict phenomena.

I mean the entire idea of Anthropocentric Global Warming is that given Global Climate X  a certain mean temperature behavior (T1) will be seen with a gas generation G1.  However,  if one were to go with a lesser gas generation (G2)  then there would be some new temperature behavior T2.

Again, this is something where the refrain has been "The science is settled"  and challenges to it are "Denier!"

And now these guys are going on with "Naw,  Science doesn't need to predict things or be verified"

Also note the implicit condescension. 'Old' Experiments are things like "Copernicus, Newton, or even Einstein"  but modern stuff is far too complicated and sophisticated for those old expeirmental methods.

Never-mind that quite modern things like quantum computing, genetics,  fusion, all eventually have to go from computer model to experiment.  Do note that the  Large Hadron Collider isn't a computer model, its a giant experiment.


Oh!  But this paper gets better.   Sure they admit that Global Warming isn't "normal" science.

In this way the politics of fighting climate change share some similarities with those of fighting terrorism. Both have involved campaigns that use apocalyptic and extreme language in an attempt to create fear and insecurity among the public. Both seek to re-engineer society: In the case of global warming, for example, an important goal is to force broad changes in consumption and production patterns in the name of such meaningless goals as “saving the planet.” We should recall, though, that the threat of terrorism—a very real threat, as events in Paris remind us, and indeed in many ways much more tangible than climate change—was used to justify a radical erosion of the privacy of Americans, and to rationalize the invasion of Iraq, an action meant to stabilize conditions but whose destabilizing consequences continue to disastrously unfold.

Yes... they went there.  So...  Global Warming is like the War on Terror...  including the erosion of liberties due to fear-mongering  and may cause "mishaps" like the Invasion of Iraq.

Uh...  is this a troll paper?  I mean is the whole Wizard of Oz thing a red flag that this is satire? Or is a genuine admiration of magical thinking?


 Our computer models can give us a thousand scenarios of how the climate may change. But remember that global warming is an unintended consequence of 300 years of industrialism—why would we think that equally momentous unintended consequences would not accompany the enormous social changes pursued in our effort to control the future behavior of the climate?
Well, given you've abandoned all pretense that these models are actually predicting things.  Then yes,  flailing about with massive unintended consequences does seem inevitable.


There is indeed a cruel dilemma here: In order for the science to matter, it must be heard; in order to be heard, it must be translated into catastrophic visions and simplistic policy formulations that are literally absurd abstractions of the complexity that we inhabit. 
*Facepalms*  So... it's not enough to advocate that science abandon the whole  "let's see if our predictions are right"  it also has to become even more of a fear-mongering Sideshow?

The necessary oversimplification, urgent appeal to fear and insecurity, insistence on predictive certainty, and direct linkage to an explicit social agenda that would create huge new groups of winners and losers (and is thus inherently divisive) obliterate the boundary between science and politics.
Oh bless their hearts.  See  it's not their fault that they have to lie and cheat to push for their economic agenda...  it's just too important!


Everything really is connected to everything else now, and the biggest mistake we can make is to focus too narrowly on one thing or one way of doing things. That’s the most important lesson of the abject failure of climate change policy and politics, and it’s one that we must learn if we are to effectively confront the new world that we have and will continue to create. 

See!  That's the reason climate change policy is failing!   The declarations aren't dire enough!

Oh and since you asked.  Yes...  both Allenby and Sarewitz are professors, in scientific fields.

Thinking on it... I really can't tell if this is an apologia to Global Warming advocates "grow[ing] increasingly loud, scary, and simplistic"  or if it is a satire against them.

Honestly, people who are worried about Climate Change should, frankly, find this article really, really offensive.

No Oliver, science is about how well a prediction matches empirical data.

Yet another predictive failure of global warming models?

Contrary To IPCC Climate Models, Massive Human CO2 Emissions Still Unable To Reverse Nature's Global Cooling Over Last 15 Years

This is my shocked face.

Of course the warmists fail to ask the most fundamental question: What if Your Core Hypothesis is Wrong? Link to a related post by Weerd.

Here we see confirmation bias run amok as "scientists" struggle to explain why their hypothesis is right despite a lack of clear data.

They're still having trouble finding a correlation between certain human outputs and specific climate effects. Let alone finding strong evidence of causation.

And yes, given the limitations of -well- planetary climate causation will be hard to prove.

Tough. That's like saying we should have just accepted the existence of the Higgs Boson because it would have been too expensive and hard to run the experiments.

Science doesn't work that way.

Some real big news.

Short story. They've found something, and have enough data to dive the odds of it not being anything to be low, low, low.

Watch and note how this man hedges and hems and considered what they might have found what they might not have and all the things they don't know. And all the ways they could be wrong.

Now contrast that with Climate Change where "the science is Settled!"

Something with a Five Sigma error measurement and nigh countless experiments, versus something that is non repeatable and has only a couple centuries of even partial direct data and one set of indirect data. Oh and also has near worthless models that don't account for the myriad of factors that govern the system, and can't even do a basic calibration run.

Testing Global Warming Models (the Remake)

Back in 2008 I had a post about a survey of global warming models that tried to map how well they predicted existing temperature trends.

The results? Not good at all.

Well here's another batch of validity testing.

That testing models for their predictive accuracy is considered novel, even heretical, among climate science just shows how far it has descended into grant-grubbing, rent-seaking quackery.

Any model, any theory, any scientific predictions Will. Be. WRONG. The whole point of gathering experimental data is to figure out how wrong your model is and under what conditions (if any) it can yield predicatively useful data.

Climate Science has the scope of its environment working against it. Unlike metallurgy or biology, they can't order up a bunch of billets of steel or a few thousand fruit flies.

No, like geology, Climate Science works on a planetary scale and has to collect data as it happens and scrounge around for proxy data (tree rings, ice cores, rock layers, ect) that they can map into a past history.

So right they Climate Science is working at a disadvantage. But that doesn't stop them from having a total surety in their results that makes Statistical Thermodynamics seem humble.

I suppose its rather like Sociologists. Their data is plagued by the mother of all confirmation and measurement biases, but it often seems they consider surveys of bored college students to be solid gold.

Then again, in both cases there's sweet grant money if you can provide the right cover stories to Social Engineering, Nannying, "Do gooders".

Over on Atomic Nerds LabRat digs into some clumsy research that confounds evolutionary reasons with sociological reasons and mixes up sex with reproduction.

Give it a read.

Why is it the people saying “IT’S JUST SCIENCE YOU CAN’T ARGUE WITH IT” are almost always citing lazy, shoddy science?

Confirmation bias and the desire for a handy argumentum ad verecundiam club?

It also shows a deep ignorance of science because the whole point of "just science" is to argue with it.

Say I conduct Experiment X and come to the conclusion that A often causes B.

People are going to want to tear into my experimental procedure and data. They'll want to do their own copy of Experiment X. They'll try Experiment Y and Z which while different from X should produce similar data vis a vis A and B.

They'll also look into the results of X and that relationship between A and B. As if there is even a correlation let alone causation.

Just because you have an experiment that has a certain conclusion doesn't mean you can shout down anyone else and that the debate is over and the science is settled.

Get off my Lawn! Or the Grid: then and Now.

In WW2 here is what the Germans thought of the US power grid system, in their own words on a document on attacking the US, specifically Section VII "Reconnaissance and military targets on the West Atlantic Coast and in the USA":

Regarding the condition of power plants, it is concluded that:
1) In the USA the completion of power plants since 1933 has been strongly promoted by the government.
2) Each power plant is connected to the other by an extensive relay system.
3) The loss of 4 or 5 of the larger power plants [to a bombing campaign] will have little to no effect on armaments production since the energy used for civilian goods production exceeds the potential for meaningful cutbacks if necessary.

This article is an epiphany to me. I am concluding forty years of engineering, primarily energy infrastructure, $ 2.5 Bn in nukes (24), fossil fuel power plants (48) and decades assessing advanced technologies (what is coming, the technical barriers, costs, etc.). These educational practices are alien to me in my ancient education. Engineering and hard sciences (which means truth) demands rigorous disciplined thinking. There is the right answer to the home work, and wrong answers.

Today, in climate change, nuclear safety, fracking, the current technologies controversies, I continually read many articles which can be summarized as, “Cesium 131 will kill everybody in Japan because I hate GE.” I find it irrational. So I have developed a hobby, of searching for the author’s bio, on the web. I induce that 90% of the articles on technology are authored by graduates in journalism or political science, often in the teaching fields. I can not remember one article on energy authored by an experienced engineer.

I conclude that erudite Americans form their political views based on falsehoods. It explains President Obama’s energy policies. And it explains my great fear: our grid may collapse. All of your computers rely on machinery built by your grandfathers. Our engineering colleges quit teaching course work, vital to power plant engineering, decades ago. Their students could not find work. The professors are now dead. The NRC just issued the first construction permit in 36 years. This means that everyone, from the junior draftsman, through the Chief Engineer, to the CEOs, and regulators, have never done one. Engineering is a professional practice. Why is it so difficult to accept? If Tiger Woods had not held a golf club in 36 years, he would not perform at a championship level. Yet we assume our power plants, very complex systems, are eternally sound. Is this rational?

Critical thinking and sustainability, in life sustaining technologies (pumping drinking water, flushing your toilets, and heating your home) must be reconsidered by “educated” Americans.

As an Engineer, I weep. With the increasing advent of copying "round robins", the decay of American STEM students, the buying of old tests, using smartphones to cheat on exams, and the dearth of experimental coursework and research, I sometimes get the feeling of the last one off the boat.

But I recall that that can also be confirmation bias and my own ego at work. The bit about the media reporting does fall right into the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect

Electricity, water, food, and eat all come by magic, until they don't. For many it seems that a separation from the realizing how physical wants are sated has led them to feel they can smash the whole system and make one that's "better", without causing any real damage (or hurting anyone important).

But as Reynolds says: they'll make us beggars because beggars are easier to please.

Again to make myself feel "special", myself and my friends were some of the last people to not get cell phones. I only got mine when I moved out to Indy after college. That's not to say the magic elf boxes in themselves are bad. Really, people being glued to them is more symptomatic of a greater illness, not the malady itself.

Also Whittle comes up with one of the best explanations of Moon-Denialism, and that its growing is another worrying symptom. And the jealous inferiority complex of our grandfathers is as much in place with our Grid as it is with the Moon.

But Whittle does offer some hope: the internet is the greatest tool the aspiring autodidact could ever hope for. Shame the whole idea has been so thoroughly crushed, but don't let that stop you.

However, you know what's worse? Compared to Kevin's essay here, the above video is a balmy bit of optimism.

UPDATE: Reader Matt Andrade writes: “If Batteries followed Moore’s Law, by now my MacBook Pro, fully charged, would be able to power my house.”

Also if Batteries followed Moore's Law Electric Cars would not only be viable they'd be beating the pants off gasoline cars by providing far, far more range for the same volume and weight.

Heck if batteries followed Moore's Law there would be hundreds of uses for batteries at that level of energy density.

Science?

Looking at some scientist's gobsmacked reaction towards measurements of glacial ice not melting Steven Green notes something.

If scientists are stunned by simple data collection, they’re doing it wrong. Their job is to dispassionately collect and analyze the data, not get all worked up because it didn’t fit their pet theory.

Confirmation bias is a nasty little bugger, and why a scientist has to be very careful to not get too attached to his or her theories. It's not about proving your theory was right; it's about finding a theory that matches the empirical data and can predict future empirical data.

But apparently all that goes out the window if you're saving the world...

Oh those wacky Fins.

The answer he gave, which was either extremely Finnish or extremely religious, is that it has to come from a genuine, bottom-up commitment. That's why turning off lightbulbs is important. To turn off the light when you leave a room is an act of piety just as much as lighting a candle in church. It has no measurable effect on the crisis at all in itself. It doesn't even have a notable effect on your own electricity bill, and if it ever does, the world economy will be in a dreadful mess. But it is a token of seriousness. It is, if you like, a gesture of faith.

Damn anti-science skeptics questioning their faith!

Not Science.

When you have to constantly "recalibrate" your model to get it to predict existing behavior you're not doing science or even understanding the underlying mechanism of the phenomena you're tyring to model. No, you're simply engaging in the type of thinking that if you make the bamboo plane a little bit bigger it'll attract John Frum and his silver eagles.

Poor modeling, it's not just for Global Warming anymore.


The problem, of course, is that while these different versions of the model might all match the historical data, they would in general generate different predictions going forward--and sure enough, his calibrated model produced terrible predictions compared to the "reality" originally generated by the perfect model. Calibration--a standard procedure used by all modelers in all fields, including finance--had rendered a perfect model seriously flawed. Though taken aback, he continued his study, and found that having even tiny flaws in the model or the historical data made the situation far worse. "As far as I can tell, you'd have exactly the same situation with any model that has to be calibrated," says Carter.

That financial models are plagued by calibration problems is no surprise to Wilmott--he notes that it has become routine for modelers in finance to simply keep recalibrating their models over and over again as the models continue to turn out bad predictions. "When you have to keep recalibrating a model, something is wrong with it," he says. "If you had to readjust the constant in Newton's law of gravity every time you got out of bed in the morning in order for it to agree with your scale, it wouldn't be much of a law But in finance they just keep on recalibrating and pretending that the models work."

And why yes, these are the exact same models that the political class uses to justify how they can run all the businesses in a country better than those that actually own and work in said companies.

Well, they use these models when they're not guided by their keen sense of social justice.

Bill Nye forgets that other people can do science too.

So Bill Nye is on AlGore's special TV channel hawking the latest batch of snake oil. He has a smooth and so very pretty "experiment" that proves C02 gets hotter under sunlight than air.

There's just one problem... the thermometers shown are not actually in the jars and are digitally manipulated from the same source image. Oppsie! What's a little falsified data when there's a message to get out?

But worse, he makes a the mistake of saying this: "You can replicate this effect yourself in a simple lab experiment, here’s how."

Don't say that 'cause someone will take up your challenge.


I think that shows "Climate Change" in a nutshell. Glitzy, fear-mongering media productions masquerading as science that fall apart whenever someone tries to replicate their claims experimentally.

How deliciousy Lovecraftian.

So a scientist discovers a collection of bones that have been arranged in spiraled loops and whorls.

By examining the age and wear on the bones he concludes that they did not fall at once, but were instead deposited over time.

He hypothesizes that they were deliberately placed, perhaps even a stylized self-portrait.

The kicker? They're the fossilized vertebrae of Triassic ichthyosaura. And the scientist thinks they were placed by a giant prehistoric octopus.

Granted cephalopods are very intelligent and in modern giant squid can take on sperm-whales, but... really?

However, truly ancient old art created by a species giant tentacled beings that ruled the earth long, long before man what's not to like?
