It's amazing how quickly things can happen for someone. Last fall I moved out to San Diego from Nebraska. One day I decided to check out the beach to enjoy the ocean and watch all the pretty ladies. I was just hanging out when a local photographer tapped me on the shoulder. Two weeks later I found myself shooting an exercise article for Men's Workout. Two weeks after that I found myself in L.A. shooting another article with a well-known photographer for Exercise and Fitness.
I recently graduated from a small college in Fremont, NE. While there I played football for four years. For the first two years I was running back but after I started putting on more muscle I was moved to fullback. I also completed a double major of business management and marketing and graduated Cum Laude. I always lifted weights for football but once I was done with that I could concentrate on lifting for physique and not just power. The fall after graduation in 2002 some friends of mine gave me great opportunity to move out to San Diego and help manage a chain of sports and nutrition supplement stores. Moving out here was the best decision of my life. I love what I do and I love all of the opportunities to be found California. I also love the whole Southern California lifestyle.
Working in the business that I am in I can keep up to date on all of the latest advances in supplements and nutrition. This helps me to continue to improve my body. I am consistently changing my workouts and nutrition to find what works best for me.
My workout routine consists of 5-6 days of weight training and 3-4 days of cardio. I change my regimen about once a month so body keeps adapting and the workouts don't get stale. I will usually hit each muscle once week with 1-2 body parts per day. However, I also cycle in training splits where hit each muscle twice a week by doing 3 body parts a day. I always concentrate on using good form and getting a great pump at the contraction of the movement. For cardio I prefer to run sprints outdoors. This is something I've carried over from my football days. It can get boring running 40-yard sprints every day so I'll occasionally use a machine or just run for a few miles outside. When I use a machine I try to mock the sprint workout by going all out for 30 seconds and slowing up for 30 seconds. About 16-20 minutes of continuing that cycle lets me keep my resting metabolism up throughout the rest of the day.
Since moving to California I've taken on some new hobbies. When I'm not at the gym or at work I love to spend my free time outdoors. I like to ride my bike and attempt new tricks under the coaching of my roommate. Someday I'll master the bunny hop. I've also picked up the sport of disc golf. It's just like real golf only with Frisbees and a lot less frustration. My favorite way to pass a sunny afternoon would be to play horseshoes at the beach.
It was great to work with John during his San Diego trip. He was very professional as well as personable and entertaining. John's attitude and commentary during the shoot help to keep things moving and made it fun at the same time. Dror Okavi was born December 28th, 1978 in Bet Halevi, Israel. Like many others, Dror’s biggest inspiration growing up was Arnold Schwarzenegger. At the age of 15, as a young athlete, he already knew that he wanted to be as strong and famous as his role model, Arnold. At age of 16 Dror began his training in the gym for the first time. There he met his trainer/nutritionist Yair Lav. Yair saw great potential in Dror and showed him the correct way of working out. Dror learned quickly and working out became his passion.
At the age of 18, Dror joined in the Israeli Army and served his country for three years. While in the army, he was in charge of physical training. He implemented a strenuous workout that was incorporated with their military training.
After leaving the army he went right back to the gym, and trained intensely for the Mr. Israel competition. With the help of Yair Lav and Kobi Ezra he was more determine then ever to win the championship.
Dror won his first Mr. Israel title when he was just 21 years old. At 22 years old he won Mr. Israel for the second time and won overall champion with only 3.3 % body fat!
Dror became a personal trainer and did some modeling for the next few years before he decided to come to the U.S. in 2004.
He is currently a personal trainer and fitness model. He has worked with some great photographers, like Alex Ardenti, Charles Worthington, Michael Neveux and Keith Munyan. He also worked with Rich Gaspari at this year's Arnold Classic, where he met Arnold himself!
Dror currently lives in Los Angeles where he is pursuing his career as a fitness model.
