4 Diet mistakes that age you

by The Editors of Prevention

Mistake #1: You avoid all animal protein.
Why it’s aging you: You may lack of vitamin B12. which is essential for energy.

Found only in foods that are derived from animals, this nutrient helps regulate your metabolism and energy production and is key to maintaining a healthy brain and nervous system. “Fatigue is a classic sign of B12 deficiency, which usually occurs in people who don’t eat very much animal protein,” says Danine Fruge, MD, associate medical director of the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa in Miami. Chewing a lot of antacids to relieve heartburn can also lead to B12 deficiency because antacids interfere with B12 absorption.

Mistake #2: You avoid supplements.
Why it’s aging you: You miss manganese and copper, which help prevent joint pain.
Because manganese and copper are both essential for maintaining joint cartilage and flexibility, “in most cases, supplementing these nutrients reverses the joint deterioration and eliminates the pain,” says Dale Peterson, MD, director of the Comprehensive Wellness Center in Sapulpa, OK. “The body can actually repair a significant amount of damage if it’s given the proper support.”

Mistake #3: You avoid fish and fat.
Why it’s aging you: Fish and healthy oils (like olive) offer the best source of omega-3 essential fatty acids ,which help prevent memory loss.
“These fatty acids are part of the brain’s building blocks,” explains Andrew Weil, MD, director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. “If you’re not getting enough in your diet, the architecture of the brain becomes weak, and brain function, including memory, suffers.” But it’s not only the amount of omega-3s that’s important; the balance between omega-3s and omega-6s is equally crucial. “Our diets are flooded with omega-6 fatty acids, mostly from processed foods,” says Dr. Weil. “The more omega-6s you eat, the more omega-3s you need to balance your levels. Most of us aren’t eating enough omega-3s and are eating too many omega-6s.”

Mistake #4: You favor packaged foods over whole.
Why it’s aging you: Packaged foods are high in blood pressure–spiking sodium—and fresh fruits and veggies contain blood pressure–lowering potassium.

“Having too little potassium in your diet magnifies the toxic effects of excessive salt intake,” Dr. Fruge says. Most processed foods have added sodium but no extra potassium, so if your meals come from boxes, you’re likely at risk. Worsening the situation, when your kidneys try to flush out the salt, you lose even more potassium. “The imbalance damages blood vessels, driving up blood pressure,” Dr. Fruge notes. “Eating better can correct the problem—I’ve seen people drop thirty points in three days.”

104 ------ egg?? ------

Eggs are Egg-cellent

Healthy or Not? We Crack the Case!

-- By Liza Barnes, Health Educator
  • Eggs are an excellent source of low-cost, high-quality protein. One large egg provides more than 6 grams of protein, yet contains only 75 calories. And the protein is "complete," providing all nine of the body's essential amino acids.

  • Eggs are one of the best sources of choline. Found primarily in the egg yolk, one large egg provides 30% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of this essential nutrient, which plays an important role in brain health and the reduction of inflammation. Many people are deficient in choline, which is found in trace amounts of many different foods.

  • Eggs are a great food for those trying to lose weight. Because of the high amount of quality protein in eggs, they make a very satisfying breakfast. In one study published in the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (2007), subjects following low-fat, calorie-restricted diets were randomly assigned to one of two breakfasts: a bagel or two eggs. After eight weeks, the egg eaters experienced 65% greater weight loss, 83% greater decrease in waist circumference, and a greater improvement in energy levels compared to the bagel-eating group. Also worth mentioning is that changes in plasma cholesterol and triglycerides did not differ significantly between the two groups.

  • Eggs protect eyesight. Egg yolks contain a highly absorbable form of vision-protective carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin, which help to prevent age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Studies published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that eggs increased blood levels of these nutrients without increasing cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
So how many eggs should you eat?
In a 2007 study published in the journal
Medical Science Monitor, no significant difference in cardiovascular diseases (like stroke and heart attack) were observed between people who consumed more than six eggs per week and those who consumed one or fewer eggs per week. So a couple of eggs a day, a few days a week, should be safe and health for most people.

According to Becky Hand, a Licensed and Registered Dietitian for SparkPeople, "One egg daily can easily be a part of a well-balanced, nutritious diet for healthy adults." An important exception is for diabetics, who experienced an increased risk of coronary artery disease when consuming greater than six eggs per week. If you have a medical condition such as heart disease or diabetes, Hand suggests checking with your physician (or dietitian) regarding egg consumption and dietary restrictions.

sushi day in Yogyakarta
Indonesia

gambar2 ni mase kiteorg makan sushi kat Silla Restaurant, Yogyakarta. dah agak lame la, kl tak silap end of July 2010.

sbb dh stress dgn clinical, blk je dari hospital, kiteorg (wafa+candra+basit) pegi la melepak kat Silla Restaurant ni. yang bestnye Candra mmg baik dgn chef yg buat sushi kat situ. Disebabkan kiteorg g weekdays+ ptg plak tu, kat restaurant ni tgh takde org. chef tu pn layan la kiteorg dengan layanan yg terbaik!! tQ chef!!

sbenanye kiteorg order set unt 3 org n air mcm biase. sbb mase tu takde org n manager pn ntah g mane, dengan baik hati, chef tu serve appetizer free unt kiteorg. salad yg super byk+sedap!!! sebagai peminat salad yg sejati, mmg habis la salad tu..hehe~

Dh kenyang makan salad, kiteorg pn intai2 la chef yg tgh buat sushi. sambil intai2, chef tu ajak kiteorg buat sushi skali. kire chef yg ajarkan.. sgt la teruje kn. first time ni nk buat sushi. ini la hasil sushi yg dibuat oleh chef n kiteorg bertiga (kl set menu sebenar takde la sushi sebanyak ni, tp chef tu mmg baik hati!! byk gile kn..)

first time unt wafa & basit. kl candra mmg dh pernah dh.

nk buat sushi ni, kire senang2 susah. hahaa~

ni la hasilnye setelah perut penuh dgn sushi, yg tinggal hanya pinggan kosong..
owh, candra n basit order sushi unagi, tp diorg je yg makan. tau unagi sgt2 sedap, tp takleh nk makan....huhuhuhu~

p/s: chef ckp kl makan sushi, kene masukkan semua skali dlm mulut n kunyah sambil tutup mulut. lepas dh telan semua bru bleh bukak mulut. kl makan sambil bukak mulut, nnt rase sushi tu jd kurang sedap. air yg paling sesuai minum dengan sushi adalah green tea.
