July 4th 1976, Happy Entebbe Day!

Dry Bones Golden Oldies in the fond memory of Yaakov Kirschen (Dry Bones) by Sali, Happy Entebbe Day! July 4th 1976

and Happy Independence Day to America!

This cartoon is from 2020. Somehow though, it feels a bit uncomfortable, bittersweet and strange to post such a happy cartoon about a super successful rescue of hostages in light of the Israeli hostages still in Gaza today. I know that Yaakov would have captured the proper feeling if he was here.

Much love and wishes for peace and for all of our hostages to be released NOW and for our soldiers to be safe.

Wishing everyone a very good Shabbat Shalom, health, and happiness and freedom.

I am sending a very big thank you to everyone who has donated to help the Dry Bones effort.

Happy Entebbe Day

Entebbe, Uganda, 4th of July, Entebbe Day, On June 27, 1976, four terrorists forced an Air France Airbus to land in Uganda, in the heart of distant Africa. The hijackers freed the French crew and in a Nazi-like selection, separated Jews from non-Jewish passengers. They released the non-Jews and kept 105 Jewish and Israeli hostages. The hijackers demanded that Israel release 53 convicted terrorists. A deadline was set before executions would begin.
The grim news haunted us daily. July 3 1976, like all the days since June 27, was a dark, seemingly hopeless and depressing day. And then it was the 4th of July.
Those of us who were here in Israel on that amazing day, July 4. 1976, will never forget the lifting of the weight from our hearts, or the joy that suddenly broke through with the news of the IDF rescue of the hostages.

Now, 44 years later, the echo of that wonderful day still brightens my soul. A 4th of July has never passed since 1976 that I haven't celebrated Entebbe Day.

Happy Entebbe Day

Dry Bones cartoon, Entebbe, Uganda, July 4, rescue, Israel, IDF, terror, border=
On June 27th 1976 , an  Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris, carrying 247 passengers and 12 crew members, was hijacked by Palestinian Arab and German terrorists. The hijackers landed the plane at Benghazi, Libya and flew it from there to Entebbe in Uganda, 4,000 kilometers from Israel.
Once in Entebbe Airport all Jews and Israelis were taken hostage while other passengers were freed. The situation seemed hopeless. Here in Israel a dark depression enveloped the country.
Then, on July 4th 1976, the Israeli Government announced the incredible and amazing news of the liberation of the Jewish and Israeli hostages by IDF commandos.

42 years have passed since that miraculous and mind-blowing day . . . but for me, and I am sure, for many others, the "Fourth of July" will always be "Entebbe Day."

Celebrating (July 4 1977)

dry bones

July 04, 1977
Dry Bones, cartoon, golden oldie, israel,

I drew this cartoon exactly thirty six years ago. July 4th 1977. It was the first anniversary of that amazing, daring rescue at Entebbe Airport. The operation had not only snatched the hostages out of their place of captivity, but had also dragged the country out of the dark depths of despair.

Here's the cartoon that I'd done the year before, when the rescue took place.

Israeli Defense Policy

Israel's Defense Minister Proposes Appeasing the Terrorists Rather than Defending the Country Dry Bones cartoon.
Okay, so we'll have to pay "a difficult price".

But the "difficult price" that Ehud Barak wants us to pay is the undermining of Israel's legal system by releasing convicts as a political act.

It's a price that nobody talks about, but it eats away at our rule of law, our morale, and the social contract that binds us together as a nation.

What we need is a return to the Israel of the Six-Day War and Entebbe. We need leadership that offers creative, brave, intelligent answers and strategies.

Israel needs leadership that is smarter than what we've got.
Do you think we'll get it?

Iran, Israel, and the 4th of July

Once again Israel is expected to do the impossible?!! ...as we were forced to do did in Entebbe?!! a Dry Bones cartoon.

No one is stopping the Iranians, and it looks like once again Israel is expected to do the impossible?!!

So on this anniversary of Israel's astounding Entebbe Operation 32 years ago back in July 4, 1976, how do you think that the current (Iranian Nuke) "crisis" will play out?

Nu?

4th of July (1983)

The Fourth of July: Entebbe Day! 1983 Dry Bones cartoon - .
Today's Golden Oldie is a cartoon from 1983 ...twenty five years ago! Mr. Shuldig is in a supermarket pushing his shopping cart and checking his picnic shopping list.

* * *
The incredible Entebbe rescue operation (seven years earlier in 1976) had flipped Israel's mood from hopeless despair to elation and joy in an instant ...something we could use these days!

Here's the story as reported by the BBC:
Israelis rescue Entebbe hostages

Israeli commandos have rescued 100 hostages, mostly Israelis or Jews, held by pro-Palestinian hijackers at Entebbe airport in Uganda.

At about 0100 local time (2200GMT), Ugandan soldiers and the hijackers were taken completely by surprise when three Hercules transport planes landed after a 2,500-mile trip from Israel.

About 200 elite troops ran out and stormed the airport building.

During a 35-minute battle, 20 Ugandan soldiers and all seven hijackers died along with three hostages.

"This operation will certainly be inscribed in the annals of military history, in legend and in national tradition."- Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli Prime Minister

The Day After (1979)

1979 Dry Bones cartoon - The day after July 4... Entebbe Day!

July 5, 1979.

Twenty eight years ago today.
Back then the Dry Bones cartoon had six panels, not four.
Back then I drew Mr. Shuldig without pupils in his eyes.
Lots of things have changed in the close to three decades since then.
One thing, for me, has not.

Today, July 5th, is still the day after Entebbe Day!

Beautiful Israel (1976)

1976 Dry Bones cartoon -War and Peace. Nine Days After the Entebbe Rescue and a Beautiful, Sexy, Charming Miss Israel Wins the Miss Universe Competition
As I write these words (on July 13, 2006) news is coming in of the expanding war launched against us by Hamas and Hizbullah, Iran's puppet forces in the region.
Missiles are hitting Israeli towns and cities. Army reserves are being called up. The IDF is fighting in Lebanon and Gaza ...And the entire country is holding its breath.

This cartoon was published exactly 30 years ago today, on July 13, 1976.
Only nine days had passed since the incredible Entebbe rescue operation by the IDF surprised the world, saved the kidnapped hostages of that day, and ended the nation's Post-Yom Kippur War depression.

...And then Miss Israel, Rina Messinger, was crowned Miss Universe 1976?!
We were being treated fairly in an international competition?!
Wow!
Israel was now euphoric!!

Nine days after the Entebbe rescue, Rina Messinger, Miss Israel was crowned Miss Universe 1976

Labor Unrest (1986)

1986 Dry Bones cartoon - Nurses Strike in Israel and it's Entebbe Day (4th of July)Today's Golden Oldie is a "Friday Dry Bones". This is the first time that I'm posting one of these, which were larger than the "normal" daily format.

The subject of the 'toon was a national nurses' strike and the Israeli government's attempt to outwit them.
As usual, in this cartoon, I used King Solomon to represent Israel's government.

It was July 4th 1986, 10 years after the rescue,
but Entebbe was still on our minds.

The cartoon is appropriate given the current Israeli military operations. As the BBC puts it:
"Israel's offensive in Gaza to secure the release of a soldier captured by Palestinian militants is the latest in a history of similar military operations by the Jewish state. By coincidence, it falls near the 30th anniversary of Israel's most famous rescue mission, the raid on Entebbe in Uganda. Former hostages and the elite troops who saved them recall that operation, which happened shortly before midnight on 3 July 1976."

4th of July: Entebbe Rescue (1976)

1976 Dry Bones cartoon - Entebbe Rescue of Hostages, the End of the Yom Kippur Way SyndromeThere was an early movie comedy technique called the "slow burn." The comedian would let his face slide into anger, exasperation, and frustration. In this cartoon I did the opposite. Mr. Shuldig's face slides from depression to relief.

The cartoon was done 30 years ago. It was published on July 6, 1976, two days after the amazing Israeli rescue of hostages held in Entebbe Airport in Uganda on July 4th 1976.

The country had been in a funk since the Yom Kippur War proved our vulnerability.
Now the abduction of a plane load of hostages to Uganda seemed to cruelly underline our helplessness. Uganda's President and insane dictator Idi Amin arrived at the airport, gave a speech in support of the Palestinian terrorists and supplied the hijackers with soldiers and weapons.
Passengers who were not Jews or Israelis were released, leaving the remaining 100 who were either Israelis or Jewish. The hijackers then announced that they would kill their captives if their demands were not met. A deadline was set.

The mood in the Israel grew more frantic, and even darker.
And then... The 4th of July Entebbe rescue!
And the mood of the entire country turned to joy.

Here's how the BBC reported it.
